Some of the quick decisions were likely a factor of him using a limited playbook that had very few decisions to make. He'll need to maintain the quick decisions as the playbook for him grows. I think he can, but I don't think his decision making last year was fully representative of what being a full time starter faces.

You have a point and you can look no further than Amart to support that.   Regardless of your excellent observation I will stand by my assumption.

  2. Also depends as an outside receiver if you are running at the x spot vs the z.

X Wr's  run deeper routes.  They are most often trying to beat jams off of the LOS.  They will average larger ypc numbers but the trade off is they will have fewer catches.

Z spot will get a lot more catches but there ypc will be much shorter.   They are working combination routes with slots and TE's along with screens and stuff like that.   I agree scheme figures into this which also is tied into how good your Qb's arm is.   How good the line is.  Etc etc.

  3. Got to block besides catch&run.   I was real disappointed in our blocking on screens and downfield. I  think they missed Warner as a guy who would block.   I think that's part of the reason that Hickman is moving out to a z spot.

I expect to see a big difference with last year because of the newly recruited size and the fact that they will be able to fit players in their nature roles better than last year.    Last year there was too much of a log jam at slot and our Z guys just working blocking well enough.

  4. I don't get the concern about the D-Line recruiting.  It's not a priority this year because right now they have 12 on scholarship and only 1 Sr, which means they will be sitting on 11 scholies at the DL spot for next year.  11 is your target number for D-line.   Now I don't mind them recruiting 1 DL guy if they can get a difference maker but 12 is the most you want to have.  It might also be smart to get 1 this cycle because the JR class has 6 DL in it and that's a lot to recruit in one cycle.  Trouble is we are already overallocated at LB and overstocking at 1 position leaves a shortage at another so that's why you want to remain in the 10-12 range at DL if you can help it and not get too crazy.

It's clear they are trying to fix the LB spot and that's why they loaded up.   I think some existing players are on notice.

I think another position that they will hit hard is DB's.  I think we are down to 13 there and we have 3 sr's so we need to get  5 to hit the target number of 15.    Getting 4 would be acceptable if you want to try and get your numbers spread out over time.

  5. Welcome Will.

2 rush OLB's in this class.  Coaches are serious about getting pressure on the QB.

9 OLB on roster with 1 sr.    2 for this class gives us 10 in the future.  That's 2 over budget.   This kinda puts the existing OLB's on notice.  Coach Dawson is working to get the position right.  Expect to see attrition after the season.

  6. Good idea for splitting this out and I apoligize for my contribution to getting the original topic off tangent.

Early enrollee's probably helped contribute to the support of an early signing date, which I really like.

I hope someday they publish numbers on how many early enrollee's graduate.   I think someone mentioned that earlier in this thread.

Ever hear of a guy named Wan’Dale Robinson?

    Adrian Martinez?

    Luke McCaffrey?

Just FYI...I edited out my questions because by the time I got them typed up and posted. (Takes me a loooong time)  Someone else had asked a similar question so I removed mine.    Having said that Runningblind really answered what I was wondering about and I was even wondering from a career perspective but that's a lot of work.

There was a  similar discussion about Curt Dukes and EE's a loooong time ago and I am just wondering if things have changed.  (Not sure if the discussion was on this board)   I seem to remember our early enrollee record to start with was not very good...

Also someone mentioned the 4 game role.  I think that helps the case for early enrollee's tremendously so maybe it's apples to oranges before and after the change?

  8. I remember going to college at UNL and the first semester was exciting and full.    It flew by.   The 2nd semester was a lot harder.  Tougher to walk to class.   Less outdoor activities.  Classes were harder.  I scheduled too many .  Not fun.   I definitely got homesick during that semester.

I'm not sure that's really accurate.  He guessed a lot at first - sometimes he mad a big play, sometimes he ran himself out of the play.  That's why he wasn't #1 on the depth chart at first.

But he started every game he was here and is at the top of the tackle charts.  To say he wouldn't have played without others getting injured is quite a leap that really doen't make any sense.

I think Domann is kind of this way.  He makes plays but we hear that he isn't always doing what he is suppose to.   I am not saying he David.   I am saying that since he is making plays then he has more wiggle room.   I think if Rahmir would of made a play or too then he would of gotten more time.

Now back to McCaffrey...I am looking forward to seeing him play.  I want to see more plays where he is passing as I don't know what we have there.    I think we are in good shape between Amart and MCaffrey with Amart starting.   McCaffrey is explosive though so Amart has to make better progress than last year otherwise he will get passed.

  10. Rahmir only averaged 3 yards a carry.   7 other rb's and WR's averaged more.  The 3 QB's averaged more.  You also have to ask your self how did he grade out on plays and what was his pass pro like.   IMO I think saving a guy for a 5th year when he is not ready makes sense to me.   I think the potential rewards outweigh the risks.   Of course you have to get input from the guy to see if they are okay with it.   I look forward to seeing how he develops.

It's a bummer, but we'll be fine. Continue to take full classes and continue to let TFish do his thing.

Agree.   I have come to appreciate Coach Fisher's recruiting.  At first I was worried but he knows what he is looking for and does pretty good with projecting kids and development.  His kids always seem to improve as the year goes along.   I think he and Verduzco have an eye for talent and to what fits for the scheme.  Fisher needs to keep making progress and I think he is.

  12. Personally,  I would think they already had their discussions with players and what their status is.   At some point you have to be true to your word and show some loyalty.   At some point if you keep upgrading your going to lose what you have.  Greed,  not knowing when to quit,  can't have 13 players all expecting to play in the rotation.   Some develop players are good for chemistry and provide depth.   These players make positive contributions through other ways until they are ready.

So I would stick with the we are full.   Now if a player choses to leave on their own well then it's a different story...(not being facetious here)

  13. Betts is a guy that can play the X WR position for us.   That really helps out our offense.   Now if we can get Manning qualified we are in good shape.

Great news and congrats to Betts!

  14. Excellent!  I love his rangey build and arm strength.  Good athlete.

As a matter of practicality I was okay with signing Leonard here  but getting homegrown kids is always extra cool!  I love it when homegrown kids play for the state.    (Must be part of my small town upbringing)

It's always good to get your Qb committed early too so this is a happy day.

  15. I like how they do it today.   If a walkon becomes a starter or earns his way into the regular playing rotation then he earns a 'ship for that year or the next depending upon current numbers.   If it's available for that season give it to them, if not plan it in for the next cycle.   Don't want to make it too complicated.

Hurts to lose Forbes but I think it also says how strong the OL is getting.  Also speaks to the body type they are ultimately looking for.
