I know they could technically afford it, but the Cubs have the 2nd highest payroll in the league currently. They also had a team good enough to compete for championship last year, and while obviously Harper/Machado/any other $20+ million a year player make you better, I don't know how much they increase you World Series odds on an already stacked team. They'll be fine. They're also going to have to start paying Bryant and Rizzo more than 13 and 11 million soon, and I don't think you want them to pay Harper if it means they can't pay those 2.

Also throw in Baez who settled for around 11 million in arbitration this year and Contreras in the not so distant future. Being a Cards fan I don't know exactly what their payroll looks like but to me you get a healthy Bryant back Baez plays short I still think Bote is the guy to keep an eye on and Rizzo at 1st. That's a solid infield to me. Then with Schwarber, Almora and Heyward that is a more than serviceble OF with Zobrist being the ultra utility guy.

To me the Cubs need to look toward solidifying the rotation and pen. Dravish is an unknown and outside of maybe Edwards and Strop the pen struggled last year. Getting Daivs back should help that big time.

There will likely be more/better academic support staff and resources.

The academic support at some JUCO's is less than what you would receive in high school. If a kid can make it out of a junior college they can certainly make it at UNL with the resources they will have available to them.

Hopefully this kid can get it figured out and we see him in the spring. Would be a valuable asset to the roster.

The athleticism is there but in my personal opinion I think we see WR out of the slot most of the time, though he will get carries here and there.

I understand wanting to get the ball to him in space more. But moving him to the slot means we lose the mismatch of him on a LB. Now that's not to say he won't be in the slot at all but I just don't see it happening a ton. I could be wrong though.

Such a shame seeing a great player going to waste in StL

Whether or not it's a waste is TBD. Just glad the Cards made a deal that should improve them for next year.

  5. Damon Benning has discussed this topic a couple times on his morning show. Basically Frost has told him with AMart they have the entire QB run game at their disposal. Frost mentioned with Mariota they had to be careful because he wasn't big enough to handle all qb runs.

It's good to know Frost thinks this was with Martinez. Just gotta keep the kid healthy now.

  6. Although we lose the big physical back in Ozigbo, and will miss him dearly, I'm truly looking forward to a backfield of Martinez, Washington, and the mixture of Wandale, Rahmir Johnson, and Thompkins assuming he's healthy.

Absolutely thrilled to see Goldy wearing the birds on the bat this upcoming season. Didn't give up too much for him and hopefully they can sign him to an extension.

When Solich was fired, I was in support of the decision.  However, it's a big "what if" if he had been retained.  I know the 9-3 2003 season wasn't as good/great as the record shows, but looking back, I think it would have been interesting to see how the new staff could have done, if they were retained beyond that one year.

Turning to current day, it's great to have the alignment from Bounds to Moos to Frost.  The direction of the University, the Athletic Department, and the football program need to be in the same direction.

I think it would've been more appropriate to get rid of Solich after the 6-6 year than it was the 9-3 season but that is small details. I think many would agree that even though this year was 4-8 and not what we at all had hoped for, it's plain as day that this thing is headed in the right direction? Does that lead to a National Title? Only time will tell. But this football program is going to do things the right way on and off the field and that's something I can support no matter the record.

  9. Was able to listen to most of this live. Stark makes a lot of very good points. The one I found most interesting was when he talked about the retreat Solich and staff took that lead to changes prior to 03 season that led to a 9-3 year after going 6-6. Having "suits" and people in position of power that in like minded with how things should be done with coaches makes a huge difference. I think we're beginning to see that come to fruition finally. Moos was a blessing for us.

His backup (Honas) has been injured with a season ending knee injury since Purdue

Honas IMO was by far the better backer between the two and probably would’ve taken over as the #1 had he not gotten injured

I think this is the case. I think it was the Troy game that Honas stepped up big time and really played pretty well. Looking forward to seeing what he can do next year when healthy.

  11. I personally like the blitz call on 4th down. Should Reed have been pressed up? I think so. It's a zero blitz and you know the ball will be out quick. That's part of the learning curve though.

I understand Chin gets a lot of criticism for this year. There's room for improvement no doubt. To me this is a defense that will be built around TO and giving our offense extra possessions. Somewhere in the ballpark of 21-27 ppg and this team should routinely be a 10 win squad.

Think about it, every game we lost this year other than Troy the team reached the 30s. He also took over one of the worst defenses in school history which showed improvement over the course of the year. Which is all you can really ask for year 1.

Am I the only one that sees the video, the reference to the SEC, and the word "thug" then cringes at the connotation?

I think there are plenty of other words that could be used. Thug is a ways down the list for me which is why it's in quotations.

More than anything I chalk it up to a rivalry game and emotions running high.

Gotta play better defense like me. .. or pick your weeks better. While I scored 102 points less than you(as of last week) I also had more more scored against me than you did. You just scored a LOT or a little I would assume.

That being said, as long as Hopkins does his part tonight I will finish with the #1 record and I really wasnt the best team.. Got lucky when I played people.

Dont worry, ill get bounced in the playoffs fairly quickly.

It's not just this league. There's a very real chance I could go from 8-3 and tied for 1st to missing the playoffs completely having scored the 2nd most points in the entire league.

This isn't a killer loss.  Tons of opportunities ahead of this squad.

With that no matter what this team does Miles ain't the answer.  He has put two talent rich rosters together in 7 years and they succeed despite him.  No real offense other than hero ball, 2/7 years with no real shot after this season is enough to ship him off.

And I could still see this squad winning a game or two in the tourney.  I'd still dump Miles.

100% agree with this. My brother and a couple buddies have a group chat where we discuss all things Huskers. I posed a question to them that I see as very relevant, Is the lack of development for Roby more on Roby or this staff?

i ask this question because he is arguably the best NBA talent on this roster, but if things go this year the way they have early he seems to be the 4th option on offense? From past experience we know he (and any player for that matter) is much more effective when he is confident. So instead of him having to generate his own points off rebounds or 1on1 ball, why not run a set or 2 early in the game to get him going? Palmer and Watson have no problems shooting whether they are confident confident or not and Copeland is a better shooter and will get more looks on pen and kick situations.

i truly hope this team gets it turned around because they have the talent to do some things this year. It's just hard for me to think it will with Miles here.
