Eric the Red
7 on 7 tournament hosted by NU Sean Callahan HuskersIllustrated.com Publisher Talk about it in Red Sea Scrolls Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan will add a new twist to his football camps this summer. On top of their regularly scheduled camps next month, NU will also host a one-day seven-on-seven tournament on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Several top area high school teams from Nebraska and bordering states are expected to take part in Callahan's first annual 'Run N Gun' seven-on-seven tournament. Callahan has big plans for his seven-on-seven event and he expects it to become one of the bigger seven-on-seven events in the Midwest region. "We feel like this event will be a showcase for talent from Nebraska and the entire Midwest region," Callahan said. "Run N Gun should become an annual event that teams will take part in and mark on their calendar each year. "Run N Gun is also a great team building event and it will be a great way for teams to generate momentum heading into fall camp." The cost for the 'Run N Gun' event is also very affordable at $25 per player. Each team participating must have a minimum of 10 players, and the event will be open players in grades 9 through 12. The participants will take part in an instructional clinic with the NU coaching staff in the morning and play a guaranteed three seven-on-seven games in the afternoon. The teams will be divided into pools of four and the winners of each pool along with four wild card teams will advance on to the championship rounds. The winning team of the 'Run N Gun' seven-on-seven tournament will receive a trophy in Memorial Stadium. "We will be using referees from the Big 12 conference and the local high school ranks," Callahan said. "Everything will be open to the public, including our facilities during the event. We will even sell concessions during the event for those who come to watch." Callahan added that there will be 12 different fields the teams use for the 'Run N Gun' event. Some of the early teams that are already signed up for the seven-on-seven tournament include Omaha Westside, Omaha Millard South, Omaha North and Olathe (Kan.) South. NU Director of player development Tim McFadden is in charge of the 'Run N Gun' tournament. McFadden has been involved with seven-on-seven events in Louisiana, Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Florida. Nebraska Director of Operations Tim Cassidy has also heavily been involved with putting together seven-on-seven tournaments. Cassidy, along with Rivals.com's Bobby Burton helped develop the Texas state high school seven-on-seven championships. The Texas event is considered the best seven-on-seven tournament in the country. "The goal for this event is for it to become a stable in the Midwest," McFadden said. "Hopefully people will put this on their calendar each year. This will be a great event for players to take part in and it will give several kids an opportunity to play inside Memorial Stadium." Coaches and players looking for more information about the 'Run N Gun' tournament can contact Tim McFadden at 402-472-5573 or email him at tmcfadden@huskers.com. Quote Link to comment
