North Platte, Neb – Sarah Pavan’s 11 kills and four service aces led a balanced attack, as the fifth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team won its 10th straight match with a 30-22, 30-15, 30-24 victory over Creighton at a sold-out North Platte High School gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

The capacity crowd of 2,400 saw a spirited battle between the state’s two Division I programs, as the Huskers snapped Creighton’s four-match winning streak and posted their 10th straight win – all by sweep - to improve to 13-1 on the season.

Nebraska Coach John Cook said the fans appreciation of volleyball made the Huskers’ trip west a special experience for both teams.

"It was a great atmosphere today," Nebraska Coach John Cook said. "All of the red throughout the gym and the fans were into the match the entire time. It felt like the Coliseum, and I had to cover my ears at times because it was so loud."

Pavan’s 11 kills on .348 hitting paced a solid effort, as the Huskers hit .324 in the win. Jennifer Saleaumua had 10 kills, 10 digs and matched a season high with six blocks, as Nebraska out-blocked Creighton, 13-2. Melissa Elmer had seven blocks and eight kills, as eight players had at least two kills in the win. Amanda McCormick added a match-high 18 digs for Nebraska, which has won all seven meetings against Creighton by sweeps.

The Huskers’ serving also played a major role in the win, as Nebraska equaled a season-high with seven aces, including a career high by Pavan, and three by Tracy Stalls, who made a successful return to the lineup after missing the last two matches. Stalls had two kills, three aces and three digs in limited duty.

In game one, the Huskers held a slim 14-10 lead before Stalls keyed a decisive 5-0 spurt with three consecutive aces sandwiched around a Bluejay timeout, helping the Huskers built a 19-10 lead. Creighton, which dropped to 12-5 on the year, whittled the lead to 24-21 on an ace by Leah Ratzlaff, but consecutive kills by Stalls and Elmer and a Bluejay hitting error led to three straight Husker points, as NU posted a 30-22 win.

The strong serving for the Big Red continued in game two, as the Huskers used a strong effort by Pavan in a 30-15 win. Nebraska led 15-12 before taking control with a 15-3 spurt. Pavan did most of the damage with four service aces in a five-point span, as she served seven straight Husker points. She finished game two with four kills on .500 hitting and four aces – which established a career high.

In the finale, Creighton, behind the play of Ratzlaff, stayed within striking distance until Nebraska pulled away for a 30-24 win. Ratzlaff had nine of her match-high 16 kills in the finale, as Creighton got within 21-18. The Husker block then took over, as Nebraska out-blocked Creighton, 9-0, in game three including six by Elmer.

The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Kansas State for a showdown with the Wildcats. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including 107.3 FM in Lincoln, and video streamed live on HuskersNside.com
