Leach doesn't hold back

Two days after the Lubbock massacre, Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach was in no mood to hand out sympathy.

Leach fired back at a suggestion on Monday's Big 12 teleconference that he ran up the score in Saturday night's 70-10 win over Nebraska.

"The interesting thing is that football is the only sport where you quit playing when you get a lead," Leach said. "In basketball you don't quit shooting when you're ahead. In golf you don't quit playing. . . . But in football, somehow magically, you're supposed to quit playing when you're ahead.

"I don't subscribe to that, and the truth of the matter is Nebraska never has, either."

Leach may have been referring to 2000, when Nebraska hung eight touchdowns on Tech in a 56-3 thumping in Lubbock.

On Saturday night, Leach pulled starting quarterback Sonny Cumbie with 9:18 to play, 18 seconds after he threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to make it 55-10.

Running back Taurean Henderson, another starter, was in to score the final touchdown with 7:14 to go.
