Benard
The Big 12 men's basketball coaches have picked Nebraska to finish eighth in their preseason poll, a jump of one position over the Huskers' finish last season. In the survey released Thursday, defending league champion Oklahoma State and Kansas split top honors with six first-place votes apiece. Texas was picked third, followed by Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa State, Texas Tech, NU, Kansas State, Colorado, Texas A&M and Baylor. Nebraska returns three players who started more than half of the team's games last season. The Huskers, picked by coaches to finish 11th in the Big 12 last season, finished tied for ninth with a 6-10 record. Overall, they were 18-13, Coach Barry Collier's best season out of four at the school, after two victories in the National Invitation Tournament. "If coaches had their way, we wouldn't even do a preseason poll," Collier said. "We know our work is cut out for us, but we feel very positive about the season - extremely excited." Nebraska continued to move through its first week of practice Thursday with a workout at the Devaney Center. "I'm about to burst with how good I feel about our team after being out here practicing now," Collier said. "We've got a long way to go, but I like our chances." Missouri was picked to win the Big 12 last season. The Tigers finished in a tie for fifth place. The coaches picked OSU fifth in the preseason. • Big 12 men's basketball preseason coaches' poll: 1.
