bigredbob
The Players had a players only meeting yesterday that lasted an hour and a half. They met because many of them are unhappy about the unresolved head coaching situation. The search has been carried out, as we all know, in virtual secrecy by one man, Steve Pederson. The players are frustrated at having no input. KETV channel 7 in Omaha broke the story on their late news last night. Players speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the team discussed the possibility of boycotting practice and or the Alamo Bowl. They discussed the possibility of holding their own press conference or writing an open letter to the media to express their concerns. The Lincoln Journal reported that the meeting ended abruptly when the players were unable to reach any unanimity on what to do. Players were said to have stormed out of the meeting amid a flurry of expletives. One player (according to the LJS) described the meeting as "very, very tense." Another player commented to the LJS saying, "We feel like we're completely left in the dark...There've been so many wounds opened, and everyone wants those wounds to close by hiring Coach Pelini." At least 20 players are reportedly considering leaving if Pelini is not named head coach. It may be those players who pushed for the meeting at this time. They are running out of time to transfer for the spring semester so they can be eligible at another school next fall. Pelini made a brief appearance at the players meeting, reminding them of the importance of being unified. The LJS also reported that the 5 Tallahassee recruits in over the weekend were impressed with Pelini. Joe Manning said the hiring of Pelini would "increase the chances for all five of us (to commit)." Pelini is in charge of recruiting northern Florida. Later in their late broadcast last night, KETV, in jest, visited an Omaha fortune teller to solve the mystery of NU's next head coach. The fortune teller had reportedly accurately predicted the 1997 National Title and some other sports related achievement which I can't recall. After viewing pictures of the known serious candidates for the job - she picked Turner Gill. Stating he was the best candidate and that he will do whatever it takes to get the job done in the right way. Noting that he was a Leo (I think) and that fact seemed to impress her. In other news, coach Solich is one of six finalists for the Cincinatti Bearcats job according to AD Bob Goin. Five Sooners were named to the AP All-American first team. NU's Josh Bullocks was named to the second team. NU's Volleyball team fell to UCLA last weekend to end another fine season by John Cook's gals. The mens basketball team beat Tennessee at home to move to 6-1 on the season. This article was written by Mike Osborne http://bestofbigred.com brb Quote Link to comment
