Roy CO HSKR
In the late '60s Devaney was about to be run out of town. The Huskers didn't go to a bowl for 2 years and the fans were restless. ...sound familiar? So, Devaney installed the multi-option pro-set and then turned the program over to his offensive coordinator in '72 when he retired. I believe it was Ferragama that lit up the air so much in '77. The following might be of interest to those who think that the NU tradition is all about the triple option: By Bob Hamar bob.hamar@theindependent.com College football has changed since Johnny Rodgers became Nebraska's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1972. The players are bigger and stronger than when Rodgers played, but the offense now used by second-year Nebraska coach Bill Callahan is in ways similar to the one Bob Devaney used in the early 1970s. "Oddly enough it's going back to where we were," Rodgers said. "We used to run from the pro offense and the spread offense. We were doing a lot more passing than they did during Eric's time when they were running the option. "So we're coming back and trying to get a little bit more balance between running and passing the football. I think we're still trying to emphasize more on special teams too. People forget that football is made up of offense and defense and special teams." Quote Link to comment
