An outdated law says the IRS and hundreds of other agencies can read our communications without a warrant. That law, known as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), was written over 25 years ago, before the services we use today even existed. Right now, several bills in Congress would fix this by updating ECPA to require a warrant, but regulatory bodies are blocking reform in order to gain new powers of warrantless access. We call on the Obama Administration to support ECPA reform and to reject any special rules that would force online service providers to disclose our email without a warrant. As I post this, we're sitting at 47,000 signees. Privacy in communications is a big issue, one that we should all care about. Technology development has affected how we communicate and live our lives, and it's time for the law to catch up to that advancement, in ways befitting of America. This won't happen if the public is ambivalent about it. Here's one very effective way to show that we're not. Let's not just hit the 100k mark required now for an official government response. It would really gather public attention to smash it. Nebraskans and Nebraska fans can do this for polls about the 1995 football team.
