beorach
I'm calculating z-scores across individual stats in nine categories (pass d&o, rush d&o, scoring d&o, total d&o, and turnover margin), averaging them for those categories, and then averaging those averages to come up with rankings. A z-score is just the difference between a stat and the national average for that stat, divided by the standard deviation for that stat. It can be converted to a percentile for easier consideration. I usually wait to post these until most teams have played at least 3-5 other FBS teams because I don't want to consider stats garnered versus lesser competition...but I got bored and decided to update the spreadsheets early. We have two more teams in FBS than we did last year (though their status may be classified as provisional yet). For reference, I'm going to start with everyone's favorite team. These are Nebraska rankings, relative to all the national statistics from all the games played to date: Passing offense percentile: 19 Passing defense percentile: 49 Rushing offense percentile: 85 Rushing defense percentile: 66 Scoring offense percentile: 55 Scoring defense percentile: 63 Total offense percentile: 53 Total defense percentile: 72 Turnover margin percentile: 29 If I averaged all these percentiles for all the teams, these would be the rankings (from best to worst - Nebraska's at 56 out of 130 teams): Air Force Toledo Missouri East Carolina Marshall Temple Kent State Clemson Oregon State UNLV Virginia Tech Old Dominion West Virginia Oklahoma State Pittsburgh Miami (Ohio) Washington State Massachusetts Middle Tennessee Alabama South Alabama UTEP Southern Mississippi Mississippi Hawai'i Michigan State Troy Stanford Army Texas A&M Appalachian State LSU Western Kentucky Colorado State Tulsa TCU Utah State Northern Illinois Central Michigan Northwestern San Jose State Syracuse Connecticut Western Michigan Mississippi State Virginia Auburn Ohio Arizona Ohio State North Texas Georgia Florida UCLA Tulane Nebraska Utah Louisiana Tech Arkansas Texas State Washington Iowa State Michigan Colorado Miami (Florida) Oklahoma Boise State Georgia Southern Wake Forest Oregon California USC Navy Duke North Carolina Ball State Idaho Texas Kansas New Mexico State South Florida Rice Indiana Houston Akron Wisconsin Illinois UTSA Kansas State Arizona State Purdue Cincinnati Louisiana-Lafayette Minnesota Memphis San Diego State Nevada Notre Dame Louisville Baylor UCF Boston College Texas Tech Buffalo Arkansas State BYU Maryland Florida State Louisiana-Monroe Iowa North Carolina State New Mexico Fresno State Rutgers Georgia Tech Tennessee Florida Atlantic SMU Penn State Bowling Green Wyoming Georgia State Florida International South Carolina Kentucky Charlotte Eastern Michigan Vanderbilt 1 Quote Link to comment
Wild Savage Beast
Nebraska is WAY ahead of Iowa on that list, so Eichorst's experiment is clearly paying off “But in the final analysis, I had to evaluate where Iowa was.” 1 Quote Link to comment
