Alex Gordon drove in four runs in the win over Boston College

Lincoln – Alex Gordon (St. Louis, Mo.) and Joe Simokaitis (St. Louis, Mo.) drove in four runs each, as Nebraska completed the weekend sweep of Boston College with a 10-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Gordon went 2-for-3 while his three-run homer in the third inning broke a 1-all tie, as the Huskers won their sixth straight game and improved to 13-4 on the season. The sophomore third baseman is now hitting .407 while pacing Nebraska with five homers and 25 RBIs. Simokaitis had three hits and set a career high with four RBIs, including a two-run double in the third as NU scored five runs off Eagle starter Matt O’Donnell.

The early offensive output was more than enough for Phil Shirek (Minot, N.D.) and three relievers who combined on a four hitter. Shirek, improved to 3-0, allowed one run on six hits over six innings for his third win in as many appearances, while Jeremy Becker (Scottsbluff, Neb.), Dustin Timm (Yutan, Neb.) and Mike Sillman (Omaha, Neb.) each worked a perfect inning of relief to complete the win.

"It was a great weekend for us," Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said. "Our pitching staff did a great job, giving up only four runs on the weekend and our defense didn’t commit an error."

Drew Locke drove in Boston College’s lone run with an RBI single off Shirek in the top of the third, as the Eagles strung together three straight singles for their lone run to tie the score at one.

The Huskers regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third, as Colin Shockey (LaVista, Neb.) opened the inning with a double and Daniel Bruce (Omaha, Neb.) was hit by a pitch before Gordon’s three-run homer to right two batters later gave NU the lead for good. The Huskers, who have won eight of their last nine games, struck again with two outs, as Beau Sullivan’s (Woodward, Okla.) single and a walk to Chad Steele (Omaha, Neb.) put two on for Simokaitis, who roped a double down the line in left, putting NU up 6-1.

O’Donnell took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits in four innings to drop to 1-2 on the season.

Nebraska continued to add to its lead, scoring once in the fifth and twice in the sixth, on an RBI single by Simokaitis in the fifth and run-scoring hits by Gordon and Sullivan, who had a pair of hits in the win, in the sixth. Simokaitis capped the scoring on his eighth-inning RBI single.

The Huskers now hit the road on Tuesday, as they travel to Omaha for a matchup against Creighton. First pitch at the CU Sports Complex is set for 3 p.m.
