2025-2026 Portal Updates

Angry Season 4 GIF by The Office
Top five sitcom moment.

Things are moving a lot slower than I expected for Nebraska with the talk of being big spenders.

The portal has only even been open a few days. And the two week 'open' period is just when guys can enter the portal, they don't have to commit during it.

Most of the guys who commit quickly are either following their previous coach to a new school or are otherwise already familiar with the coach at their new school, like Minchey with Holgorsen.

Most other guys are going to want to take some actual visits to schools they're thinking about transferring to.

How familiar is Minchey with Kentucky’s offense?

Here in lies the issue. Many will say that we have sooooo many holes to fill, and we NEED to pay top $$ for OL and DL. Then some will whine that we don’t pay enough for a QB. If we over pay for a QB, it limits us elsewhere. We didn’t “increase” our NIL by 30-40 mil, we just increased it TO those numbers. We are still on the hook for a lot of the kids we are currently paying. I made the statement about how the almighty $$$ rules the game, using TT as a prime example and had a few good spirited debates pushing back at that notion.

The Penn State thing is interesting. Oregon broke them. They are now acquiring 3-star players (previously had 4- and 5-star players) with a coach who is skilled at turning a struggling program into a good one. (I like Matt Campbell) Can he take an above-average program to the next level? This was a risk for them.
I'm sure there are tons of articles on this subject, but PedState is now in a position the rest of us can appreciate. They fired a guy who didn't win a title but he won A LOT of games. So when you do that the coaching fraternity takes note and the elite coaches (who you can count on one hand) can demand Fort Knox.
So if PSU pays that, then they have less money for the players. I'm guessing Campbell demanded a lot, but not as much as Urban or Cig would've demanded.
Campbell is definitely a risk (no one is a guarantee), but if he fails they probably have the $$$ to move on.
Here's ESPN ranking the hires ...
Kiffin = A+
Franklin = A
Morris = A
Sumrall = A
Mora = A
Carney = A
Campbell = A (7th best hire)
Huff = A
Every other hire is rated beneath those guys.
7. Matt Campbell, Penn State. When Campbell took over at Iowa State in 2016, the Cyclones had enjoyed two ranked finishes ever, none higher than 19th. He engineered a No. 9 finish in 2020 and a No. 15 showing in 2024, succeeding enough that going 8-4 in 2025 almost seemed disappointing. He had eight winning seasons in nine years after ISU had just seven between 1981 and 2016. The problem for almost anyone Penn State hired was going to be that he wouldn't have a résumé that stacked up with that of the guy it just fired (Franklin). Campbell comes about as close as one can get.
