New Defensive Cordinator

I have no idea who could/should take over for Cosgrove if he was let go immediately.
Honestly, I'd hate to see what could happen if he was let go mid season. That's gotta be a death sentence for the defense if there ever was one. While I am getting tired of the defensive performance, I'd be hard pressed to recommend changing a head position like the DC mid year. If it gets much worse, though, I might.
The logical part of my brain tells me you are correct. The rest tells me it can't get any worse and we should roll the dice on a new D coord.

Good thread here we should keep open and get ideas as long as our defense continues to play so poorly. I'll go with a longshot...Ken Norton Jr. from USC. Not a lot of coaching experience...he has been the linebackers coach at USC last few years. But, he is a former NFL all pro and 3 time Super Bowl winner...he has also had the benefit of learning under Carroll. Seems to have a great relationship with the USC players and players like to play for him. Would bring a lot of passion to the position (which I think we need badly).
Great suggestion!!!! That's what we need is a coach on the sidelines (especially on defense) that is going to get into the games and get the defense fired up. USC has a great defense and I would have to think he would help us out a lot. We can't get much worse. I'll tell you this much you better have the paramedics standing by at Memorial next weekend when I go to the ISU game because if it turns out like this last game I'm going to have a f'ing stroke!!!

If we do fire somebody, The replacement will be someone who's had connections with Callahan in the past, so we probably wont get any of the mentioned people here..

Ball state scored just about every time they touched the ball. How much worse could it have been? They could have scored faster to make the game 83-82?

I'm sure there would be a lot of people wanting the DC for the University of Nebraska.
This I highly doubt.

Yes, the history here is outstanding. The fan base is second to none. The facilities are top notch. the university is wonderful and Lincoln is a great place to live. All these points scream out that the position should be attractive. But.... the situation here is unsettled. How long will Callahan last? For that matter, how long will Pederson last? These are open questions for which there is no answer --- yet they are questions and, as such, great risk comes with the position. If one were to take the position, then they may be gone within a year or two if Callahan continues to fail to produce. So.... it is doubtful that a high profile coach would be willing to move into the DC at seasons end at NU because a proven coach would not need to take such a risk. We might get a great person who is not proven though who is willing to move from a lower profile position at a non-major program and hope to carve out a good name for himself.

An alternative take is that it might be attractive for an up-and-comer who figures that they may have the inside track for head coach at NU were a head coaching change made within a year or two (or three).

Again, two more years of this level of competivness and the whole staff will go. So any coach coming here for a DC after this season better rent rather than own.

Did Norton graduate? Don't you have to have a degree to coach at a public school? In Texas you do. NU just needs better athletes. Cosgraove had great defenses at Wisconsin, he sent mucho players to NFL, especially CBs.

We seriously need to stop looking through rose colored glasses when it comes to Cosgrove. I agree that we don't have enough overall speed on defense, but the the players we have now should be good enough to hold Ball st. to under 600 yards of total offense. I see a defense right now that just isn't prepared and Cosgrove has to be blamed for that. This will be a big test for BC because I know he and Cosgrove are very good friends, but he has to see what's going on. Lets hope he does the right thing!

I think Callahan made a huuuge mistake in firing Bo Pelini. That man gave us one of the best defenses in the nation, and now we have Cosgrove who apparently doesn't know how to run a defense

Really, 610 yards? I'm embarrassed

BOGASM! :rollin

It's been said plenty of times before...he apparently wanted the head coaching job or nothing. If you want to debate whether he would make a good head coach, go ahead and bogasm yourself to death. Otherwise, quit talking like he would have stayed here as DC.

I heard a few rumors about him wanting the top spot, but I don't recall ever reading or hearing anything official.

w/e

Regardless, if Cosgrove can't prove by the end of the season that he's competent enough to do his job, then he has got to go.

I have no Idea who could take over in the middle of the season. One of our existing coaches would probably take over on an interim basis, but that isn't going to win us many games either.

Following the season I'd love to try and get Bud Foster from VT, but that isn't going to happen. My 2nd choice would be Will Muschamp from Auburn - especially if Tubs gets canned or Charlie Strong from Floridawho may be tired of sharing the DC job with Mattison.

On the short list would be Mike Hankwitz of Wisconsin and Jon Tenuta of Georgia Tech. - Brent Venebles would be great if they bring back Mike Stoops once he's fired and Venebles leaves OU.

This guy would definitely be my #1 choice. Wonder if he'd leave the ACC.
