Portal QBs

Might be in the minority here but I'd be happy with Chiles at this point. Lower price tag than others, has only one year of eligibility left so it's a prove-it year for his NFL chances. Not to mention, we loaded up with a couple beefy linemen to help protect him and are in the hunt for more. Whole lot of upside for relatively limited downside under our current circumstances. Buys us one year to further develop TJ and/or look for another transfer next year.

FWIW, his worst game last year was against us where we sacked him four times and had two of his three total interceptions on the year (granted only played 8 games).

I definitely love the idea of redshirting TJ if we can keep a starter healthy in 2026 so that TJ is the man for 2027.

TJ will be a good power conference QB, but I just think that first of all, everybody should redshirt if you can. But he specifically needs a little more acclimation to the speed of college ball in terms of his passing game, IMO.

Hard to do with 2 qbs on the rooster

DR played in 9 games and threw 6 ints.

Trae is going to want to come in and play right away in 2027 especially with him being a higher ranked recruit. I definitely agree with you on the redshirt but some freshman don't need to redshirt

Yeah but we can't borrow troubles like that, man. We have to just do what we can with who we think is going to be on the roster in the next year, IMO.

Yes, and came back a few weeks later to go 27-33 for 243 yards, a 64 yard scramble, and a TD against Indiana. Team still got smoked, but it was the best opposing QB performance Indiana faced all season.

I didn't start today high on Chiles, but the more I look into him, the more I like his upside. He's nothing more than a one-year rental, but could be mutually beneficial especially with our investments on the line to protect the QB. He was sacked nearly as much as Dylan was the past two years and would have been more had he not been hurt. Or.... we gamble with an undersized Colandrea, overpay for Lagway, or risk it with Pribula whom Mizzou was happy to replace.

Agree with this, in this day & age of the portal.

But like I've said many times, I'm not sure what TJ was expecting when he signed when Raiola was a sophomore as he was coming in as a true freshman then.

And then on top of having basically no control over the players without some semblance of contracts, we have the other problem where our other backups are now gone, so we have to bring somebody else either way.

it's almost where at some position, get 1 stud and 2 duds....Rinse and repeat. Hard to build/develop a team doing this at certain positions (primarily QB). I think this is where Rhule is learning on the fly (and other coaches). They days of building a team through HS recruits and developing them is going the way of the dinosaur. Some teams still do it that way, but I think those are ones that have had a deep pool of talented players for a while. And a solid winning culture/history ie Bama, UGA and Ohio St. Read that approx 54% of Miami's starters this year are portal guys.

NU appears to have quite a few areas of immediate need. Unsure if we can "buy" that many guys tbh. Hoping that Geep and Aurich can develop the hell outta what we have and use the portal to make that easier. Maybe running the 4-2-5 will be able to better use the guys we have.
