Portal QBs

I feel like there have been almost no comments in this thread about Colandrea, which kind of surprises me. Maybe everybody is just numb at this point even to good news (which would be understandable).

I decided to feel really good about Colandrea and turn the corner into cautious optimism about next season.

But honestly, you see the stats and the clips and start to feel like every quarterback in the portal is a game-changer hungry for a better opportunity.

...and they'll all be in/out according to short term opportunities. Fans will not form emotional connections to players, and eventually not to teams either...

The downward spiral is accelerating.

The greed will kill the sport at the college level, and massively reform all collegiate athletics.

I don't think the current system will survive another year. Everyone agrees this is bad for the game, with the possible exceptions of agents.

I don't want to be a downer, but he had 8 fumbles last year too. And I convinced myself with Jeff Sims that a QB trending the right direction with turnovers had made actual improvements which I will not do again. Colandrea had INT rates of 3.7%, then 3.4%, then 2.2%. Jeff Sims had 5.1%, then 3.7%, then he was all the way down to 1.6% the year before transferring here. I don't think Colandrea is Jeff Sims, but he's a heckuva lot closer to Sims than the comparison many fans tried to make. (Chiles had INT rates of 3.4% and 1.5%, and a maximum of 4 fumbles in a year.)

I'm excited for Colandrea, he's going to be fun to watch. But I think some people are forgetting just how painful the bad plays and inconsistency can be with gunslingers. Aurich's defense better be a lot better at forcing turnovers if we're starting Colandrea (or Lateef for that matter) and we hope to keep our turnover margin gains from last year.

2025 Colandrea had 9 INTs + 7 fumbles in 14 games = 1.14 per game

2025 Dylan had 6 INTs + 3 fumbles in 9 games = 1.0 per game

(You could argue that Dylan should be more like 8 games, with USC, HCU, and Akron being half games. That would put him at 1.125 per game.)

Meanwhile, Colandrea had 25 more yards per game passing than Raiola, and his rushing is a net 55 ypg vs Dylan.

In the Mountain West, and a lot of my point is I don't buy the one-year decrease in his INT rate. That said, Raiola did turn the ball over more than the quick game and fade heavy approach would lead you to believe. I hope to be proven wrong (and maybe this has more to do with EJ leaving), but I expect us to turn the ball over more next year with our current QB options.

As to our QB room, I really hope Dana is heavily involved in the selection process. Minus DH, our previous valuation staff lost all credibility at Sims

I laugh because last year most on this board ( including me) would have melted down if we would have signed a kid from Ferris State and the qb from the traditional powerhouse of California. Guys poking holes now would have had a hay day poking holes last year and been calling Rhule incompetent. Now, those 2 QB are still playing and one with some hardware. Just let things play out for goodness sakes.

Lol... Sims was a last resort choice, They didn't want him, he was just the best they could get on short notice.
They chose Sims over Thompson in camp so they must have wanted him enough. Granted Casey was a hold over from SF so which qb am I missing they hit it on? They didn’t turn over a rock and discovered Dylan under there
