Rhule to Penn State?

I don't have a problem with him not categorically shutting it all down. To my mind, that's how most coaches usually handle these things.

Many of us have dream jobs or opportunities that we'd leave our current positions for, even if we're happy in our current positions, so it's not like Rhule or coaches should be an exception (if PSU is indeed a dream job for him).

I think if we as fans expect our favorite teams to cut out distractions and do their jobs, we too can cut out this distraction 😎. This is D1 football in 2025 so if your coach isn't being mentioned for good jobs or your players aren't being solicited to change teams for more NIL money then you're probably doing something wrong.

He still just won't say he's out.

Matt Rhule is not bad with words and he still won't take his name out of the running.
How many coaches have flat out said that they're not taking a gig and then ended up taking it? I think he's handling it fine.. and if he wants to leverage it for more NIL, great. It's also his alma mater so I would imagine he's going to be extra careful in his wording. Maybe A. he's offered B. he wants to take it (given what he went through in carolina and what just happened with Franklin) and C. His wife wants to go. All those things have to coexist.

Being the #1 guy in Nebraska - literally the biggest celebrity in the state - should also ensure higher than average non-salary income. I have no idea what Rhule's endorsement deals and side-money entails, or if he's monetized his growing podcast profile.

If Matt wants to stand still and let our donor base worry we'll lose him if we don't pony up more NIL money, then the speculation is working in our favor.

Based on what, exactly? They beat a 9-win Northwestern that year. They could have easily beat a Nebraska team that was poised to pull off a 6-game losing streak.

Well I can't say anything exactly, but I would still put money that Nebraska beats Akron in the season opener that became the Colorado game, and a game-tested Nebraska might have made a difference in the game they gave away to Colorado.

Maybe not. But it always felt like a legitimate "what if"

Those same Huskers took #8 Ohio State down to the wire in Columbus, but I don't think that proves they were among the Big 10 elite either.

Rhule being Nebraska’s #1 guy gives him leverage for not just NIL but also a restructured contract for himself and his staff.

This is almost certainly the actual outcome of all of this, on our end anyway.

But the Cignetti news makes me hope it happens sooner rather than later. Something something if you want it you should put a ring on it, or however that goes...

A new contract wouldn't guarantee anything other than a larger buyout.

True, but even then, having an extra stack of cash sure comes in handy. I'd rather be up $15 million and trying to hire a new coach than down $50 million and trying to hire...
