Rob Aurich Hired as Defensive Coordinator

Really like this from Aurich yesterday:
Aurich said he it's the coaches' job to build defenses around the personnel they have, though having bigger defensive linemen can make a coordinator's job easier.

"We didn't have a ton of tremendous size at San Diego State, so we moved more, stunted more, more stuff to get them on the move to create penetration," he said. "Now if we have some hosses on the inside, then you let those boys roll and your play behind them ... Our job is to take the evaluation of the guys that we have and then build it for what fits them. And that's something I feel like we've been good at in our career doing quickly, identifying their strengths and then leaning into those instead of asking a player to do something he's not really capable of."

We have had too many coaches going back to Callahan that would rather try and force a scheme rather than try to build on the strengths of the players.

This is an oversimplification I realize:

Who of these players would have had meaningful playing time on a top 25 CFB team?

Riley VanPoppel
Elijah Jeudy
Jalen George
Gabe Moore

The answer is none. They need to see improvement from guys that still have eligibility left and they need some of the young guys (Sua Lefotu, Dylan Parrrott, Malcolm Simpson, Landen Davidson, and Tyson Terry) to step up in a big way. That room is super young.

The transfer portal is the other way to fix this but every other team is going to try to do the same.

GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too many people act like the portal is supposed to give their team some advantage in (re-)building their roster, when in reality everybody else is doing the same thing, so it's largely a wash.
Correct.
Unless you're a generational coach who can bring a bunch of believers with you when you get hired. But that didn't happen so no need for me to bring it up.:sneaky:

Listening to Cig (assuming that was what you were referencing) his coaching acumen is through the roof. He is an example that if your "X" works at a lower level it will work at a higher level.

Aurich must be really good.
As soon as we hire him, SDSU gives up 49 points, 354 yds rushing, 607 total (and still playing) vs North Texas.

Reassure me that this is because he is leaving there and not because of the system he left in place or bowl game opt outs.

That is a great question.

I am not so sure. Because North Texas is a full-throttle offense, with a pretty good QB running the offense, and a very great running back.

Srsly, Hawkins plays RB like an NFL back. Wish we could throw the money. He can go pro with or without playing for Alabama or Ohio State. When the time comes.

As for SDSU defense, fingers crossed it's a lot of things, including talent, and not an Aurich thing. UNT going Indiana on them.

Intersting comment from Cam on the new D staff from Vegas:
“It’s simplified now,” Lenhardt said. “So it just gives us the freedom to play fast. That’s something I’m really enjoying about it. With the coaching change, there’s a new shift in energy. The whole defense is feeling it, and it’s a good vibe out there.”

I think I've heard this before, but hoping it means guys will be in the right place at the right time..

They will just be freely in the wrong place now, and will get there quicker. 😉

I did a quick google and SDSU has 2 players opted out. Both for the portal. Both DE's....8 tackles for 1 and 6 tackles for the other on the season....Looks like they also played their 3rd string QB (starter out and back up lost during game, 2 starting WR's injured and several other 2 top CB's out (one injury and one to prepare for combine). Injuryy report they looked pretty beat up at key positions.
