Rob Aurich Hired as Defensive Coordinator

Is this the amoeba defense that when I saw Wisconsin run it I was always like why are not more teams running this? Requires very good hybrid defenders and excellent tackling. But I used to like it because it is a swarming defense and took offenses out of their rhythm.

This should go over well...

One is not fired for being close….suspect this is Rhule being polite so as not to give a mass review of why Butler was let go.

8 out of the top 18 teams shown made the playoffs.
OU, Tech, tOSU, JMU, Oregon, Indiana, Miami, Bama

And here is how the other 10 teams did:
Toledo, 8-4
SDSU, 9-3
LSU, 7-5
Arizona, 9-3
Mizzou, 8-4
Wake, 8-4
Fresno St, 8-4
Iowa, 8-4
WMU, 9-4
Louisville, 8-4

From the looks of it, having a defense among the best can really help your team with victories.

The only team not to win 8 or more was LSU. And they fired their HC during the season and later benched their QB who was a preseason Heisman candidate and early round NFL draft pick prospect. No wonder they hired Kiffin. LSU was a mess despite having a very good defense.

Don't try and convince me something is good, then give me a stat that includes Iowa in it!

IIRC, Starting with Saban, the 3 coaches who preceded Kelly all won a Nat. Championship.
I only bring that up as a counter-argument to anyone (I'm looking at you kawkkkeyes) who says patience is how you build a program. In today's climate, you can't "hope" for lightning in a bottle. You have to make it rain! I would add, going forward, the A.D. position is going to be MORE important than the HC. Because coaches aren't going to spend a career at one school. So you better have an A.D. who can find the hidden gem, not once, but repeatedly.

4-2-5, 3-3-5, 3.5-2.5-5, whatever, just stop the run.

Who cares if the 4th guy is standing or even just off the line. Be fast, get to the QB, hold the edges, plug the gaps.

All this and Coach to friggin tackle with sound technique!! Saw too many hits behind the LoS only to see the guy bounce off and pick up 6+ yards

LSU doesn't have time to waste 3 full years to make football decisions.

Sad thing is, Florida hasn't got the memo yet. Or Auburn.

Nebraska fighting LSU for DL coach according to this article. Elijah Robinson was the DC at Syracuse but got demoted back down to DL coach due to poor performance as DC and he's ready to leave. At one time he coached under Rhule at Temple. But this quote has me more than a bit concern:
Nebraska had the same problem with rushing the passer.
This past season, with Robinson calling plays for Syracuse’s defense, the Orange allowed 34.92 points per game — which ranked dead last in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

SU struggled to rush the passer, ranking in Pro Football Focus’ bottom-30 teams in pass rushing grade, and notably conceded 70 points against then-No. 9 Notre Dame in a historical loss. This came after the Orange surrendered nearly 30 points per game in the 2024 season, where their defense cost them repeatedly despite a 10-3 campaign in Brown’s debut.

After online publication Football Scoop reported Saturday that Elijah Robinson is leaving Syracuse to join Lane Kiffin’s new coaching staff at LSU, the site confirmed Monday that Nebraska is trying to poach Robinson at the last minute to be its defensive line coach instead.

Robinson was expected to be a defensive line coach with the Tigers, the same position he would’ve served at SU in 2026 if he’d returned to the program after being demoted from defensive coordinator. Now, it appears multiple big-time programs are battling for his services.
According to On3, Robinson was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday to meet with Kiffin and talk about the details of his new role.

Robinson has a previous connection to Huskers’ head coach Matt Rhule. From 2014-16, Robinson served under Rhule while he was the head coach at Temple as the Owls’ defensive line coach.

Elijah Robinson is one of the best DL coaches in the country and would be a far cry better than anyone we have had here including Potroast. He is just not ready or doesn't have it for a DC job.

There is a reason why 2/3 of his last stops could be

Texas A&M

and then potentially LSU. He will be among the highest paid DL coaches in the country.

Yes, the Peter Principle may apply - promoted to high up as DC. Probably will do a lot better as DL coach- his specialty.

And if he can draw in some great players and the new OL coach can bring in some great players on the OL, then maybe we will see the kind of turnaround on our 'foundation' as we saw with ST this year.
