Tangent Thread - Lifetime Edition

Because after years of posting on this board she still doesn't know how to find topics that already exist and has no interest in doing so.  Same with the whole editing a post thing.  It's easy to do, quickly fixable if a blunder is made, but still she will make 5 threads with one post each to get the same point across.  And any time someone points that out or suggests doing those things to her it is met with the "I'll just leave if that's how you feel" response.  But she is a helpful and kind contributor that we all just have to give the benefit of the doubt and accept the eccentricities.

I'm torn.  On one hand she is hurting literally nobody.  She is having fun and sharing her interests like a cordial human being.  On the other hand, it's definitely a special treatment thing using the "doesn't know any better" mentality when mostly anyone else would be expected to conform to community standards.

I think she’s immature and easily offended and prone to flying off the handle at any perceived slight.

But I still find the whole thing amusing.

The thing is I think most people think most old ladies are kind. But if you think about it that doesn’t make sense. I imagine the same % of old ladies are kind as the % of 40 year old women. It’s just a perception of old people that we have. 

My mom isn’t as old as Roxy but I bet she’d have trouble with the forum too. It took her about 15 years (1995-2010) to master e-mail. She’s had an iphone 2-3 years now and she can’t remember how to browse the internet even though I’ve shown her 3 times.

A few notes/thoughts for those who have been so involved with all of this.

For starters, we believe Roxy's thread is largely harmless and differentiates itself enough to be allowed to stay as it is. Adding it all to the 'what are you listening to now thread' would probably generate a whole new set of complaints.

Second, if people don't like her thread, or any thread on this board, nobody is forcing anyone to view it or take part in it. Choosing to do so is entirely a personal choice and shouldn't require mod/admin hand holding. She enjoys the thread, is happy to take part in it, and likes responses from those who also want to take part. The amount of consternation about all of this is, admittedly, somewhat baffling. Some of what I've seen could definitely be considered a form of bullying and we don't need to see that on Huskerboard.

Lastly, and just as a general rule of thumb, we don't need people trolling threads or taking it upon themselves to confront others. If you have a legitimate concern with a thread, report it to the mods/admins. That's what was done in this case and this is our conclusion.

Not being a d!(k and letting Roxy kind of have her own playground to run around in seems like a pretty reasonable ask, IMO.

She's a fun addition to the board even if she barely has any idea what she's doing. She stays pretty well confined to that thread and posting recipes anyway, right?

We have a long-standing tradition of gif-bombing silly threads at HuskerBoard. I believe you've participated in that yourself. That we chose to attempt to have a reasonable discussion about that thread with the OP should show that we weren't trolling. That it was construed as trolling, and that attitude adopted by the Mods/Admins, is interesting.

Mods have the ability to interpret the rules as they see fit, but let's not use words like "confront" idly.

I'll be Frank, the thread annoys the crap out of me and I honestly have no idea why.  But, if letting her have it as opposed to some civil war type situation is the option I'd gladly avoid it and let her have the thread and let Staloni continue trying to hit that

Not all situations are alike, as you well know from your days as a moderator.

Some of the behavior in relation to Roxy's thread went beyond what should be considered "reasonable." Some not-so-subtle attempts at manipulation, posting songs she posted in her thread separately into the 'what are you listening to now' thread, posting videos that clearly had nothing to do with her thread, and even starting new threads based on the title of hers. Individually, it may not seem like a big deal. Collectively? I think it's a bit disappointing.

The mods weighed all the relevant variables and came to a conclusion. I will leave it at that. The resolution still stands: if people don't like the thread, I encourage them to take some personal responsibility and not participate.

Yes, people did that. It's not dissimilar to gif-bombing, I guess. If gif-bombing is no longer allowed... OK. Just would like to know.

That's the thing. Merging similar threads has happened hundreds & hundreds of times in the past. The people who really get pissed about that are people we typically don't want on the board, and they usually matriculate away, or get on board with the board.

Why this case is different is the curious thing. Because, apparently, it's OK if Roxy gets really upset that her thread is treated like other threads, and it's tolerated that she threatens to leave when she doesn't get her way.

That's a very good way of describing how Roxy operates. She couches her comments in kind language, but there's a threat behind it when she doesn't get what she wants.

The difference between Roxy and say a MattyIce is that one lashes out with anger, the other responds in hurt feelings.  But both just don't know better and or can't help it.  One got banned and one is going to be allowed to continue doing their annoying thing because it won't actually hurt anyone.

I gotta agree though, merging it will only do two things:

1) Piss her off and she leaves.  Hardly an outcome we need, she isn't a toxic entity.

2) Will make her bring her circus to the merged thread where she actually interacts with a larger portion of the board where hurt feelings and anger will quickly develop.

Letting her live on her island doesn't seem so bad when you think about it.

Letting this one member do this thing, no, not going to hurt the board.

But how many members doing this does it take to become a problem? Two? Six? I can see it getting out of hand pretty quickly. Message boards are communities; those who can't or won't join the community don't usually last very long.

My guess is, although it wasn't spelled out, is that this (like most things) is being taken on as a case in itself. Case-by-case basis for this, as for most things. If we get more members doing this kind of thing, they'll deal with that down the road. Anticipating (probably correctly) that it won't become a bigger issue.

AAAAAAAAaaaaand that about wraps up my interest in this whole thing. It was a fun philosophical/point of procedure question that has clearly not been taken that way by everyone involved or observing. So I'm done with it. 

The Mods don't need more grief, even if it's about a minor discussion like this.

Well I'm disappointed my posts in that thread were moved, to a tangent thread no less. Who knew that a thread titled "Going to do this" had a theme that had to be adhered to. IMO this is bullsh#t. I posted a few videos.....WTF is wrong with what I posted in there? I didn't realize we could have our own private threads on this board and posts by others would be nuked. Like I said, it's bullsh#t.

Ok, I've now read the explanation behind this. It didn't help. How was my video about how to brew beer considered "off topic"? What is the topic of that thread other than song videos Roxy chooses to redundantly post from the internet? If that's all that's allowed in that thread ....I guess I don't get the purpose of a message board. Is that how it's going to work now, the OP gets to decide what is allowed in the topics they create, especially when they don't adequately let others know WTF the purpose of the thread is by giving it a title that might provide a clue?

Agree here. I’m ok with letting the thread keep going, but why remove the videos other people post in it? Is sarcastic posting against the rules now?
