Pinstripe Bowl

I mean, I'm rooting for Rhule and Nebraska and will watch every minute of the bowl game and care more than a grown man should, but coming off the Wisconsin win and losing the way we did to Iowa really took a big chunk out of my optimism.

It's really the opposite of hysteria.....it's the normalizing of disappointment.

I don't think you're being hysterical.   But we must have vastly different internet algorithms if you don't think a large and vocal contingent of Husker fans are.

Which is odd to me because we have fewer reasons to be upset this year than last year.  And the year before that.  And the year before that.  And the year before that.  And the year before that.  And so on.  I know, it adds up, but that's hardly Rhules fault.

I don't understand how people thought Rhule was going to be a quick fix kind of coach, given his track record.  In his introductory press conference it was stated rather plainly he was a program builder.  And the program was at it's lowest point in 60+ years.   Maybe a guy who has never turned a program around in 2 years was never going to turn the program around in 2 years.  Although, he might be a bit ahead of schedule compared to usual.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the hysterical element beyond a handful of posters on this board, the same voices you'll find on every team-based board on the internet.

I think the more accurate word would be cynical. I tend not to be that person myself, but it's hard to wage a logical argument against anyone feeling that way. While we won one more game than Scott Frost's best season, the undisciplined loss to a very middling Iowa team felt like every depressing loss last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. And so on.

I don't know if assuming Rhule would be a quick fix meant competing in the conference or simply getting to six wins, and/or avoiding the futility of all those one-score losses, but there's no reason not to believe a first year coach will do better immediately. Curt Cignetti inherited a 3-9 team with fewer resources and less of a legacy. Maybe he's an outlier, but there are a few of those first year coaches every year. Some of us just wonder when it's our turn. Maybe Rhule is that guy. I'd hope we could make a fair assessment after four seasons. At this point I'd say the doubters and the optimists are working with the same amount of evidence.

As far as non-hysterical fan expectations go, the general consensus here on Huskerboard was that six regular season wins were the bare minimum, and those who thought that was probably the ceiling for this team were considered Debbie Downers. The unsentimental and nontpartisan oddsmakers had Rhule at 7.5 regular season wins this year.

This narrative is over played imo.  Cignetti brought 7 starters with him from his last program along with 6 backups and 6 assistant coaches who already had the system down.  The success they achieved was great for their program but you will be hard pressed to find any expert that thinks it will be sustainable.

In the new NIL world, I wonder if any successful team will be allowed to build on itself. Seems like everyone - Rhule, Cignetti, Deion -- has to do a mad portal scramble every off season to plug the holes old-fashioned recruiting and player development can't. If Raiola has a good season next year and the team goes 9 - 4 but well outside competing for the Big10, someone will make the case for Raiola to jump to a contender for his last two seasons.

I don't think many people expect Indiana to improve on 11-2 next season, but I doubt they'd drop right off the map again. I think most Husker fans could live with that. It depends on whether we are building to 11-2 or 8 -5. The new Big 10 will never have an easy season.

I have to get up at 3:30am to catch my flight tomorrow morning.

It will be a night of tossing and turning with weird dreams that I slept through my alarm. Can’t wait!

You aren't wrong but I believe the really successful teams will be great at developing while also be good at plug and play using portal guys as necessary.  Dabo is on one end of the spectrum and making it work while Deon is on the other end making it work.  My money is on Dabo having more lasting success than Deon but I guess time will tell.

I’ll have to live through you.

Are you going to the Husker bars Friday night?  Do you have your pizza places scouted? Eat some food cart mangoes for me. A squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkle of chili flakes  will get you just right.  I’m very jealous, if you can’t tell
