  1. The first couple of years Doc was here, I thought he really did an impressive job with little/no talent. Especially, the year of the muppets, when we were the smallest team in D-1. I thought, along with a lot of folks, that once he got some talent, he would do fine. Wrong. He has more talent now then any team he's had..............but he seems to have no clue how to utilize it. He may be the stubbornest coach in history. He hangs his hat on D, but is woeful on offense. Case in point..........he has enough athletes to run the floor (as evidenced by the higher point totals in early games this year), but reverts back to his favorite offensive strategy in "bigger" games. That consists of throwing it around the perimeter until the shot clock winds down and we are forced to take a poor shot. Shooting 4 free throws? Maybe if we penetrated a little we might draw some fouls.

Barely averaged a little over a point a minute vs a TERRIBLE WF outfit. Wasted time-outs and nothing set up coming out of time-outs. Totally out-coached again at crunch time.

  2. Pretty tough to explain this one..........

NO energy, no focus, and non-existent D on the final play (from our Defensive mastermind of a coach)..............

What happened to the team that was getting up and down the floor earlier this season? We break the press and then let them re-set. I have defended Doc for 5 years, but it's getting harder..........

  3. They aren't hiring because it wouldn't be profitable to the businesses despite helping out the unemployed.

Are you insinuating that the primary role of starting/running/expanding a business is to create jobs?

We may not want to acknowledge it, but the primary instigator of starting/running/expanding a business is to create a profit. Certainly, an ancillary benefit to the s/r/e is providing jobs and, (if it applies, and by extension) helping the unemployed.

But the notion that it is altruism as a motivator that prods someone to undertake the considerable risk and liability that ensues with the launch of a private venture is simply untrue in the majority of cases.

Capitalism can offer numerous benefits, but not if emotionalism supercedes business decisions.

Nope, I am not insinuating that the primary goals of business is to create jobs. Their goal is to turn a profit by any legal means possible, of which one is hiring enough workers to where they have the highest productivity with the lowest costs.

    The jobs aren't there because:

    A) Businesses are operating to where they turn the best profit. We have too many people so naturally there aren't enough jobs to provide for all the workers.

    B) Businesses are handcuffed by a minimum wage law and inflation so hiring more workers would put them in the hole [which would be stupid on their part].

That is what I'm insinuating :)

Good insinuating.......................but an even better sig line......................

  4.

Happy to find out we have mind readers on this site. I disagree completely and I am a TMart supporter. It just makes sense to have a feel for game speed and electricity in an environment that is not a blowout or kneel down situation. We seem to have NO problem substituting 21 other positions at any point in the game...............even so far as starters disappearing for much of the season. To argue that a series (in most games) late in the second quarter or early in the third carries unacceptable risk is nonsensical.

Most every CFB coach in America not named Steve Spurrier or Brady Hoke would disagree with you.

    .

Sorry, I've got to disagree again. If you would look at participation charts/minutes logged/ etc for the majority of programs, I would wager our # 2 QB logged less total snaps then almost any other.

Notice, I am not quibbling with whether or not a # 2 should be give gratuitous minutes in a game in jeopardy, just that there were, (even in THIS odd season) enough opportunities out there to avoid a potentially calamitous situation if TMart went down. We wouldn't want to be so hamstrung that we were reduced to a simple dive play and, in effect, punt the offense for the remainder of the game.

One of the benefits of the board is...................it's ok to disagree...............

  5. I saw someone post on one of the Yahoo message boards that UCLA should consult with Terry Donahue and Dick Vermeil and conduct a national search for a coach. I don't get it, Westwood is in a great area, great weather, a giant talent pool in So Cal, they should have a better program and should have no problem attracting a good coach...but they have to pay for one too...that prolly won't happen...by the way, the basketball team sucks now too :hmmph

According to Skippy, the facilities are holding them back.............. :dunno

  6. It was entertaining while it lasted.

And, for what it's worth.................a close acquaintance totally dialed into the whole D.C. network tells me that even Herman was surprised the way the whole campaign took off.

He was basically on a book selling tour that ignited and morphed into a campaign. Which would explain why his staff seemed so unprepared in so many ways.

  7. I think this well said, but I also believe the OP stated what in fact many people think but just don't voice. We absolutely don't know what goes on behind closed doors and at practice, but what we do know is that our #2 quarterback has NO meaningful snaps of any kind. To me, that is a very large potential problem.

3 blowouts all year, and Carnes played in all 3. Do risk losing a game to develop one player?

Exactly. And not 1 of those 3 would've been considered "put in the backups" secure by Tom Osborne. Possibly UT Chat but definitely not the others. But the same people would complain about not putting the game away as are complaining about no experience for backups. Crying about Carnes not getting reps is code for "I don't like Taylor much"

  9. Sounds very likely that Brion is leaving the team. I have to say that disappoints me quite a bit. This staff has done a very poor job at developing the young talent on this team. Playing time is a big part of player development. There was opportunities this year to do that, and these coaches chose not to. I don't pretend to know the reasons why, but Bo is so closed mouth and misleading with people that is kind of pisses me off that we may never know why he chose to waste the years of 3 incoming freshman, and also chose to waste a year of helping develop a BACKUP QB! I hate to break it to you Pelini and Co. but your savior Taylor Martinez is not going to be here forever. I know you already have him pegged as the starter for the next two seasons. Hell Bo used to preach up and down how every position is an open and ongoing battle to be won in practice. That has not been true for Taylor. Hell your not even allowed to talk about Taylor without Bo getting his panties wadded up and acting childish. Who else does he defend like that? I will say, I like Pelini, I hope he coaches here a long time, but the handling of playing time this year has been very very unfortunate. We have a lot of very talented players on this team who are not seeing enough playing time. Brion is one of them, and I know this might ruffle some feathers, but I've seen Brion play, and I hate to break it to you Martinez kool aid drinkers, but Brion is a better dual threat QB than Martinez will ever be. Now Brion may not understand the offense the way Martinez does, but you can't tell me it looked like Martinez even had a great grasp of it. So I don't really buy into that argument at all. What we executed maybe 5 different plays worth a crap all year. Without Rex Burkhead this team would have gone nowhere. Then instead of giving Burkhead some help when we burned a season of Ameer's, Braylons, and Aaron's career, we then suddenly rarely saw the kids again. Braylon looked amazing nearly every time he touched the ball! You can't tell me with Ameer's abilities that he couldn't be used all over the field. Hell we trusted the kid with punt and kick return duties but he wasn't good enough to get on the field anywhere else a few times a game? Then Jamal Turner completely loses a year of football. He moves to wideout for the team and the coaches and for what? So the coaches could say he wasn't working hard enough? He made the move for you guys? That wasn't a sacrifice on his part? Somehow he's not good enough to see the field, but Brandon Kinnie was? I like Kinnie but the guy deserved to take some sideline break and get his focus back. He dropped damn near everything that came his way this year. He made it clear that he wants a shot at QB. Will he ever get it? I don't know. Alonzo Whaley came in a made plays immediately, how often did he get to see the field? Corey Cooper played a few plays, then never sees the field again. Then another big line of bullsh#t coming out of the program was the Stanley Jean Baptiste thing. The kid gets on the field, makes an interception in his first game. The ensuing week we get to hear that the guy has learned the cb position in just 3 weeks time. He is all of a sudden listed as a starter on this team at corner, then where did he go? He made a play, so he gets the boot? Pelini cried all year about execution and making plays, I don't want to hear it. We have guys who are playmakers on this team, guys with real athletic ability. They don't get on the field.

Brion, I hope you stay man. Your better than Martinez and I hope you get a shot to prove it. I hope that shot comes before we sit the next two years with Martinez getting all the snaps.

I know Tommie Frazier might have a biased opinion on this, and his opinions are usually strong. I hate to tell some of you though, if you listen to him, he is usually right. Here is a link to Tommie's show where he discusses some of this.

Except for the parts arguing that defending TMart is somehow ingesting kool-aid, I agree with quite a bit of this post. It has been rehashed over and over but it was almost criminally negligent the manner in which redshirts were wasted and opportunities for some meaningful snaps were ignored.

Of course, we don't know the specifics but the "circle the wagons" and bunker mentality of the staff really stifles any information flow and begets speculation. I am the first to admit the coaches know infinitely more about each individual situation, but the entirety of it all encompassing SO many different players leads one to believe they really are lax in this area.

  10. I said it once and I will say it agian. There is only one reason that this kid is not a 4 star or possible 5 star rated player.

    And that reason is.................??

He committed early on in the process and he committed to Nebraska.

I'll take that commitment over a 5th star any day.....................!!

  11. Dr. Sowell's position............

    http://outraged-comm...ccupy-wall.html

It appears that you have been duped. Dr. Sowell apparently did not write that . . . rather it has just been copied and pasted from one conservative blog to another and attributed to him.

People should really research these things before regurgitating nonsense.

    "apparently" meaning just what..................??

If I have been duped, please show where, rather than a ubiquitous modifier that tells me nothing.......

AND, just for the sake of your argument..............even if he didn't write the piece......................whoever did has an especially articulate propensity for making his argument.

"Apparently" meaning that Sowell didn't publish this piece. I haven't actually been able to ask him personally . . . hence . . . apparently.

Like most right-wing chain emails (or left-wing I suppose . . . but my family never sends me those!) it's hard to attribute it to an actual source until it shows up on Snopes or a similar website.

Edit: Well, this is timely. Again, your sincerest apologies are accepted in advance.

    http://www.snopes.co...soapbox/ows.asp

Well, I asked for clarification and you provided some, so I will grant you that. (although many have suspicions about the impartiality of snoops)

I don't know if "apology" is the correct terminology since I didn't accuse you of anything other than to ASK for clarity.

At any rate, your rather terse suggestion that folks should research these things before regurgitating them begs the question. If one reads several on line assertions that "appear" authentic (and seem to fit the philosophy) of the supposed author, what definitive research is required to validate authenticity (other than the aforementioned snoops). It would seem easy to "dupe" almost anything about anybody if someone is willing to go to the trouble to do it. Are you saying that in EVERY post you quote you have done exhaustive additional "research" to affirm veracity? If so, good for you.

As for me, I'll try to avoid getting duped (but must confess, it may happen)

The bottom line is that as I responded earlier..............WHOEVER put the piece together has made a fairly cogent argument for his position.

  12. You are freaking out needlessly. We just need to take care of OUR business.

Urban didn't exactly leave Florida at the pinnacle of the football world when he belatedly (and repeatedly) discovered his family.

I am stunned at the number of people who believe his arrival portends an immediate seismic change in the B!G landscape.

  13. 55 months ago NU fans were worried Bill Callahan would bail out on us for a better job. So worried that we gave him a big fat raise. Then we fired him a few months later.

You just can't worry about these things. We pay Bo a fair salary. NU is a high profile, premier program. I don't think he's going to make a move. And if he does we will hire someone else.

The "we" that you speak of was actually just SP ensuring his legacy while at the same time finagling a hefty raise and extension for himself....................

  14. Why did UCLA ever even hire Prick Nudeheisel? He took a good CU program and crushed it. He took over a poor Washington program, and he made it poorer. He might have some skills somewhere, but a HC he is not. However, I was kind of hoping he'd be at UCLA for a while. It was going to be interesting who broke more recruiting violations between Nudeheisel at UCLA and Kiffin at USC.

He has that "boyish" appeal that mesmerizes some A.D.s..................he can also sing and play the guitar.................he has resurrected the entire sweater vest industry single-handedly.........he has clever stunts before games where players wear makeup and chant while coming down onto the field to intimidate opponents....................plus, he is an alum.........................Just too much/too good to pass on.......................EXCEPT FOR THE MINOR FACT THAT HE REEKS AS A COACH...........

  15. The only positive issue to come out of a LSU-Bama rematch would be to fire up the playoff crowd again. Otherwise.............it's a snooze-fest...........

If you want to be REALLY po'd........................Read "Death to the BCS"..............................an incredible eye-opener into the total corruption of the bowls and the entire sordid process...........

  16. It would be pretty amusing to see someone of Newt's intellectual caliber debate the sloganeer of Hope and Change. If Obama agrees to Newt's Lincoln-Doublas style format, the hilarity would double. If they did all proposed seven of them, it would septuple. Obama's vapid campaign tactics from the last election cycle will implode this time around, especially when it's now your 9% unemployment economy and no one is running after the disastrous Bush presidency.

While Newt is smarter, he has some very bad policy positions to defend.

    Advantage... Obama.

ah..............some might argue that Obama has some very bad policy positions to defend....................

  17. Dr. Sowell's position............

  18. Abdullah an A on special teams the first half of the season........................and then...........???.......................coaches tried to turn him into the second coming of the "statue".............i.e. Santino Pacino (spelling??)...a.k.a. the human fair catch machine................??

  19. So far, doesn't look like JBD's effort has changed this year. I get so tired of watching that lifeless guy on the court. He gets 24 minutes yesterday and pulls down 1 rebound?? The guy is 6'11" and gets 1 rebound? How do you explain that other than a complete lack of effort. The guy always looks extremely tired, even at tipoff. I know he scores some points for us, gets a block here and there, but he is not my favorite player to watch. Why does Doc keep him in the game so much?

    Lack of an alternative.................
