Honestly. Peters on his best day couldn't run a competent defense. The guy is a tool and washed out druggie that very few people have respect for. Too bad simpletons listen to him. Just because someone yells loud, it doesnt make him right. The only simpletons are the idiots who can't see and understand what he says. And BTW, it's not "Peters".

That's what I thought after all the gushing about the defense earlier in the season. After the WI blowout I've completely lost interest. Sure I watch the games with excitement but quite honestly I've lost faith in Bo. Losing to unranked teams and the host of other issues has completely soured me on this staff. I'm now in "I'll believe it when I see it" mode. Do I think we'll beat PSU? NO. Because among all the other issues we have 3 DL in the rotation now - and you know full well what PSU will do. Run it down our throats and then run some more until we begin to like it. Then BAM - play action. TD. Sorry, I can't see anything good coming Sat.

This is a pretty big over-generalization. So far, that's two players. Out of how many that played? More than 50 I'd guess. Yes, there were others who had a bad game but that doesn't mean the coaches weren't trying to get them going. Pretty sure I read last week where the coaches specifically said they were telling the players not to over-look Northwestern. Coaches do what they can to motivate but it still comes down to the player. If a player can't get themselves ready, I don't know what a coach is supposed to do. Yes, that could also mean that the coaches could be putting someone else in the game but people saying coaches have to get everyone motiviated has never made much sense to me. I don't think anyone ever said "Yoshi didn't even watch game film that week." You're making a jump on that one. Several comments from Yoshi and A-Rod are in this OWH article. I think you can blame the coaches for not realizing Yoshi was hurt, if that's what was causing the problem. It would be different if we didn't have anyone else (which was the claim last year) but his backup STARTED EVERY GAME LAST YEAR and now barely gets in. Yoshi and A-Rod both got pulled after the failed fourth down with about 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. I'd say that was the worst effort I've ever seen but that would imply that they actually put effort into the play. They BOTH looked at TWO different defenders but NEITHER made any attempt to block either one! At least they got pulled after than and didn't get back in (I don't think) but apparently Yoshi is back with the first team so we'll see if it made any difference. I agree. I've seen him completely whiff on a block and the player he missed end up making a TFL. I think if you go back and watch the two of them, you would see that A-Rod's problem was just one game and Choi is a lot more than just one block. Regarding it being just two players ... well A-Rod said "we" and appears to have been speaking for the team (or at least a subset of the team) --- he did not say "I" but we. And... it is evident... essentially week after week, pretty much year after year --- that the NU is often flat, unmotivated or un-focused for portions of (and sometime major portions of) almost every game. So... I think problems in terms of motivation and focus are far, far more extensive than 2 players and is a very pervasive problem. And that is... a coaching issue. So how is it possible for a HC who's known for having a firey no-nonsense persona, not able to motivate his team?

They took a game off. Which means they took a bunch of practices off. Makes me sick really. No wonder every time I hear Jason Peter talk he's fuming about what goes on over there. You'd think Callahan & Cosgrove were still in the house. All the stuff JP talks about are effort related - not so much talent related. He KNOWS it when he sees it and I've never heard him even once say anything that he's happy about. For instance, the handing out of 22 BlackShirts. TWENTY TWO??!! Really? Fisher gets one? SJB gets one? Courtney Osborne gets one? This is a joke. BlackShirts is a time honored tradition that went to the 11 starters, not to guys who made courtesy appearances .

And here's the sad sad part about all this: Bo comes out and constantly rails on the fans and media. Now what? This is some serious egg on his face. No if's and's or but's. The next time he gets up on that podium and tells Chatelain to shut up Chatelain needs to fire back and ask him why he can't motivate his team and play with any sort of consistency. "We didn't execute"? No $hit Sherlock. We now know why. Forget about tackling - you can't get these guys to screw their heads on straight! This little issue that Yoshi states would end up being the reason that this team couldn't even make it to the B1GC in one of the WORST years in the history of the B1G - with the crappiest collection of mediocre teams that I can remember! That's what makes me mad.

Again..... I haven't seen the link to this "[Yoshi] didn't even watch game film that week". I find that to be grounds for Yoshi's dismissal. If not, then Bo is not the person I think he is.... and all his tough talk is just empty noise.

Better question - aren't there 20 6'5" 300lb behemoths in NE that can be found? If WI can find them right there in WI (similar northern European Nordic race as NE) why can't NU?

I'm just saying that even YOU probably wouldn't just jump in there and take on someone of Sandusky's build & rep. It's not like this was some anonymous 5'6" dude. McQueary must have been thinking a million things least of which was that he was employed by the U and probably didn't want to make huge waves. He probably figured that people higher up in the chain would take care of it appropriately. Again... where he's wrong is that he let it slide for 9 years. His initial reaction I can totally agree with - after all the crime had already been committed.

^This. I read on the PSU boards that when Joe was told about the incident from the GA that it was not even close to the detail that the Grand Jury statement was. But Joe said that it was obvious that whatever had happend disturbed the GA greatly. So the GA might have only said he saw sexual abuse, which might have been all Joe said to the AD. However, that should be enough to act on what you have been told. Think about this for a sec: That same GA (McQuery) coaches WR's....He's actually coaching as we speak. Now how WEIRD is that. Doesn't change the fact that he has no right to judge if a unit plays with pride or passion. He can talk all he wants about the scheme and I'll probably agree with him, after all he has probably forgotten more about schemes than I'll ever know. Was Peter vocal during 2009 when the 2-gap worked? Or has he just recently been vocal just this year about our D-Line running the wrong scheme? He's been vocal the whole time - even with Suh there. Yeah, J Peter was long very critical of Suh. Didn't think he was enough of a "murderer" and/or leader. Suh developed though, I think. I suspect J Peter would agree. I am glad to finally see E Martin playing. He makes mistakes, but he also makes plays. Violent plays. Bo had issues against running QBs in 2003. His scheme still does. But he isn't the only Defensive genius to have issues with that. What baffles me is how some guys make one mistake and they go into witness protection and other guys seemingly can make mistakes all day long and keep playing. It's called "depth issues". Bo doesn't have depth on the defense, hence the constant shuffling around of players. On offense (as in the Tyler Moore and Turner examples) it works bec. he has guys to fill in. That's my take on it. I've said this a million times: Even with Bo's best defenses he's had problems stopping the run. That HAS to change. Stopping mobile QB's is equally an issue and seems to be a much bigger issue with Bo's schemes than it is with say......... Iowa or Michigan's defenses stopping a mobile QB. We've given out career days to average QB's. Case in point Braxton Miller, Kain Colter, Derek Carr..... and on and on. None of these guys have had near the career days they did against other teams as they did against NU. Remember "Robbie Rouse" RB from WKU going wild on our defense last year? What about that Fresno RB? Or even Kendall Hunter getting 200+ yds? Ridiculous.

Agree, but TX needed help now. They didn't have time to develop players at that position. Heard should be a beast with 1 more year of weight training, I see him at 220 easy. I also think Bo thought Marrow would be cleared and he would have another big man back there, that was unfortunate. Speaking of Marrow and FB's, Legate's play has been about the worst I've seen out of a NU FB in a long time (minus Cally's years of course where we didn't even have a FB position). CJ Zimmerer was supposed to be good but now looks like another bust. WTF? The more I think about it the more it becomes apparent that we just don't have the size to play consistently well in the B1G. We saw how OSU was shredding the DL..... I'm now scared about what a putrid PSU might do running betw. the tackles.

Here's the 1 other thing that bothers me: Jason Peter does not seem to be a big Bo fan or a fan of this defense. If there's 1 guy who should know it all from soup to nuts about NU's defense and how they run things it's him. Yet I always hear him talk about how they're not in the right schemes and how they just don't play with any sort of pride/passion. And you know what - I agree with him 100%.

I think bec. it's clear as crystal that we simply don't have talent on the DL. There's no doubt about it and that's across the board - DT to DE.... slow, can't shed blocks and don't have good instincts.

Back on topic: The main issue I think that we see with the fab3 RB's not getting reps is size. They're not big enough to run betw. the tackles esp. in the big10 and consequently the offense is limited. Bottom line - we should be recruiting bigger backs. And anyone who comes up with arguments about Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Duce McAllister, etc. - think again. Those guys were thick with a low center of gravity. The fab3 are slight of build and don't have the mass to play betw. the tackles in the b1g at this time. Hence - every time Green comes in he's running that short side option or outside zone. There's a reason why tu went after Malcolm Brown and Bergeron (both 6'1" and 210+lbs) and didn't go after Rex Burkhead or Green (both under 190 ).

"deficiencies"? You mean it sucks? Who else at the college level runs the 2 gap? In the NFL I think just 2 teams run it. Here's a better question: Why do we run the 2-gap with a nickel/dime? That to me that is suicide! And we saw the results last week. In a 2-gap you need a big DT at the very least. If a defensive player is in a one gap assignment, their role is to basically take out whatever is in that gap; be it a lineman, fullback, or running back. A two gap assignment is basically an option play on the part of the defender. He is expected to quickly evaluate the situation and pick the gap that will most easily be exploited. This is a common task for a nose tackle that is lined up directly over the center. If Bo doesn't fix this scheme and come up with something else - like a base 4-3 with 2 gap or something we're going to get taken out behind the woodshed by MI. Maybe not PSU but MI will definitely do what NW did to varying degrees. Don't for a second think that we lost the NW game bec. we "didn't show up". Hog wash! That's a loser's excuse. We lost bec. we saw a team that had the brain power to take advantage of our weak schemes. We've seen enough of this defense getting shredded during the last 4 years (minus the 1-2 big games with Suh and gang in there). It's nothing new. We saw it with Suh against TTech in 09.
