I'm talking about using the fullback once in a blue moon, running the saddest option ever, but continually trying a sorry looking zone read. It was mostly an uncoordinated mess.

I said during some games that if I never saw the option again (as we "ran it") I would be good.  It was completely ineffective for multiple reasons.  I never really saw us use the FB in a traditional way either.  It was more along the lines of throw everything at the wall to see what sticks.  For me, it didn't stick.  Although I called for it early and often, but again was never used as I envisioned a traditional NU FB would be used.

I feel I learned that Chubba Purdy could actually be good in a pinch, say 2 games if QB1 goes down.

I feel that Haarberg could be serviceable in a game, if CP isn't available.

Not saying it would be a great feeling going into a game, but at least you know what to expect.  And they have some experience now.

A lot of quarterbacks are going into portal to make bank.  Not necessarily NFL material, but pretty good college players.  So they know what they are doing and I do not blame them.  But also, I haven't seen a player out there at quarterback worth 50K to 100K per game.  Just look at loyalty and moving around as one example.  7-9 wins is not worth the risk for the price being exploited.

We do need someone to be that QB1.  A transfer portal QB.  I just hope our NIL group doesn't bend over and overpay.  There are enough guys out there to make our team better, including quarterbacks without the uber headline flashes because they threw xxxx yards with xx TDs.

But it's tough to figure it out when it comes to the portal.

Player A B and C have the stats and the starts.

Player D comes from the G5.

Player E comes from FCS, has the same tangibles as the others, but isn't driven by the thought of becoming a millionaire in college.

I just hope we get it right and get a good one.  We need this.

Spot on with the bolded.  Do I think a "better" QB would have had us bowling? Yes.  Do I think that is the only piece we need to get to the next level?  No.  But it was one of the most glaring pieces that we needed.

I think Chubba has a lot of upside.  He played in 2022 and honestly unsure how much actual coaching he got.  Then  he got injured.  This year, new scheme, coach etc...and still injured.  Again, unsure how much coaching/live reps he got.  HH was not even in the QB room last year. Starts this year as QB 3 IIRC, and then in game 3 gets the call.  In reality, I am unsure how much coaching and attention they have actually received at NU.  I like Chubba over HH as he appears to be an actual dial threat guy.  Chubba might even be able to be coached/developed to be QB1. I like HH in a Taysom Hill roll.  He is a guy that needs to see the field.

Sadly, the portal is now a $2 million crap shoot.  Would Sims NIL value have been that much last year?  Unsure tbh.  But what if it was. A lot of money for little return.  Much like some of the businesses that kick in.  I wouldn't mind a QB from G5 or even a FCS school.  I think they would be "cheaper" and although playing at a "lower" level, you can't "coach" talent or abilities.

We all know that the talk about going back to 90's running was just a gimmick to appease the fans. If we get McCord we'll most likely do what all the top teams are doing. No way we minimize his arm talent just to showcase the most pathetic running game we've seen in a while.
Edit: Going along with the 'We're the old timey Huskers' script and trying to be the jack of all trades Alf and Ralph Deck Builders is making Satterfield look confused and indecisive. He needs to call what he calls best and turn off the outside interference.

Unsure if it was a gimmick, but using the FB the first play of the spring game was.  And a nod too Frank.  I think they thought they had the answer in Sims, a "dual threat" QB who would be effective in the passing game.  Unfortunately for NU, he was a TRUE dual threat in that he fumbled and threw INT's with equal ease to the other team.

With who they are looking at, I agree that they appear to be going after legit "traditional" QB's.  Although Howard is "more" running than the others.  I am a run the damn ball guy, but I like Michigan's running game just fine.  Using a "traditional" QB.  The traditional QB appears to be more in Satts wheelhouse for sure. Maybe that helps.

  4. Honest question/observation.  I wonder what type of offense we are planning to use next year.  (Don't want another discussion of scheme/identity).  Basically a dual threat QB or more "traditional" passing QB.   I think by default and circumstances we ran the QB A LOT. Some by design and necessity.  BUT, it looks like we are interviewing QB's with a diverse skill sets.  Some appear to be true "traditional" passing QB's.  Other more dual threat.  I am ASSuming that looking at more traditional QB's we are possibly going away from the "running qb", but then Howard is being looked at.  More dual threat guy.  Do we simply run a style based upon the QB?  Can our current O do just as well in one vs the other.

My .02 is that Satt has a more pro style traditional bent, so I am guessing we might be leaning that way to get an O he "wants" or is more comfortable with.  Just seems we are looking for QB's not like our current 3.

The boys are working out and practicing.   They just can't do it as a team.

With all of the additions of analysts and interns, can you have an analyst/intern run off season practices?  I know Frost did something with ST's, but can't remember if this was with actual coaches or when practices were not allowed during covid.

Agree. But, this with Novell was his second year at FSU.  Can you image what Husker fans will be like if they happens again next year?

Time flies. LOL. Thought it was his 3rd!  Thanks.  I'd love it if we turned it around next year.  Would honestly be excited to get to a bowl and look forward to the announcements to see where we are going.  Been a while...

Just thought about this as I was typing, we are (and have been) recruiting kids that have never seen NU in a bowl game...I remember being angry when we lost 7 or 8 bowls  in a row....And TO saying the hardest thing to convince Nebraskans is that 10-1 isn't a losing season.  One day.  GBR!

No this team does not need a lot of help.  We are just a few pieces away.

With just a little bit better QB play, we beat Minnesota, MSU and Maryland.  That's a fact.  And that's 8 wins with a bowl game coming up.

Plus we took Wisc to OT and were tied 10-10 with Iowa with a few minutes left in the game.

Even in the CU game the defense was holding it down while the QB play was beyond horrible.  We gifted them 13 points right before halftime.

This team doesn't need a lot of help.  Just a few pieces away.  QB & WR come to mind.  A better punter.  And better punt return efforts.

Agree. Football is a team sport. But the losses weee primarily the result of 1 position. Average QB play this season we are bowling at a minimum. Good play we are playing in the conference championship.

For the people who think good coaches win immediately.

Some FSU fans were calling for his head early on.  He can coach.  4 years of winning records at Memphis.  Good track record.  And FSU would (i'd assume) be much easier to recruit than Memphis.  I like Rhule and his record of improving a team.  Just wonder if he could have kept that level of success as he appears to rebuild and move on.  Hoping if he gets us back, he stays.  The norm is several years to flip.  Not year one.  And we were just a QB away from seeing a big change in our W-L record in year one.  For me, this makes the 5-7 record sting...Those last for games were "right" there".

  9. Watching Iowa vs Michigan, I think Rhule was correct.  We didn't believe we could play with Michigan. Iowa believes they can beat them.  Through one half, their D has kept them in the game.  Definitely  like that our D is playing in a similar way.  More depth and another year in the system and our D could be like that.  Just get the O to average...

I have full confidence Rhule Will right the ship.

was partially joking just to reignite this thread. That being said, i don’t think urban’s done. I think he waiting for one more go. Off field stuff aside, he still first in line behind Saban for greatness this generation, Kirby smart chasing him as is dabo given his age.

I’ll be shocked if Iowa keeps this within 24

Watching now and Iowa has a great D.  Simply fundamentally sound with good technique, disciple and always watching the QB and backfield..  Watching their DB's in man coverage and keeping JJ limited in the passing game.  If NU can keeps its run D and improve the pass D we will be solid for sure in that department.

If we sold our soul for urban we’d not only be in this game instead of Iowa but we’d be about 3.5 hours from upsetting Michigan.

why? Cause urban cannot be tamed

disclaimer: unless it’s an nfl team or a coed in a Ohio restaurant owned by urban

Dude can coach for sure.  There were al the allegations and rumors, but staying on Fox as a commentator and still broadcasting makes me wonder.  Seems like if they were that egregious, he wouldn't still be broadcasting.  But maybe a reason he isn't coaching.

Interested in how Iowa does vs Michigan tonite.  See if Michigan can hold them as well as we did.

I think we get Rhule with no drama or allegations to follow.  In time I think he will right the ship.

I have mentioned his name a few times in this thread, but check out Kaidon Salter right now on CBS Sports Network. He currently has a 239 passer rating.

20-25 last night.....On the season 2700 yards, 31 tds-5 INT's....1064 yards rushing...Was a 4* out of HS in Texas. Went to Tennessee and was dismissed Fresh year after 2 incidents.  No known issues this season, but does have some baggage.   If we are looking at a good QB, that is a true dual threat, worth reaching out.  Might be willing to get to P5 over G5.    Willy Korn has been with Chadwell his career and is their QB coach and OC (I still feel that Chadwell was and is the OC), but maybe he comes for a pay raise. Make him QB coach and passing/run game coordinator. Thing is he has been brought up in this "scheme" or "identity" since he has been playing/coaching (played QB for Chadwell in Div II)  He knows the ins and out and the nuances.  But yet, I like him.

Again, a lot of other good QB's out there in the G5 and FCS....Might not cost a dime other than "actual" NIL.  We have hit gold with little named kids and struck out on some highly rated guys.  Seems to be a crap shoot at times...

Oh I know @lo country and took your comment as a positive and agree. :cheers   Yes we were both here and went through those times.  All in the past.

My point was toward the crowd that still brings him up in 2023 / 2024. It makes no sense to do that.

With this team, you see the W's aren't there yet, but the foundation has been set, and we are just a few position players away.  But also, you see other teams around the country getting better too.

:cheers  For sure!  Agree with you.  The W's are not here yet, but even with one of our worst O's I have ever watched at NU, we won 5 games despite that.  And being dead last in TO's....(even with a weak B1G West).  Average QB play and find someway to fix the TO's and we can be onto something.  A QB is an easier fix.  No idea how to fix the TO's.....Here's to watching recruiting and the portal.  And the bowl games:D

Agree ! South Dakota State May very well beat us this year and past 4. I follow them extremely closely. Their QB is better than anyone in our room. I hope he decides to transfer after this year, bc he would fit our system perfectly. There is a reason Neb and Iowa bought out the current and future contracts with SDSU. Local P5 teams refuse to play them right now

FCS at the top has gotten a lot better for sure.  NDSU, Montana, Richmond etc.....James Madison in year one has done great.  Liberty playing well in year 5.  App St has had success moving up.  I wouldn't be oppossed to lookng at FCS to seek a QB or other players.  Sound football is sound football.  Not everyone makes a successful transition from FCS to FBS, but we have all seen FBS recruits not pan out as well.

It was so long ago, it doesn't make any sense to go back 12-15 years for a few fond memories and some heavy turbulence with Bo talk on the board.

I mean, there is literally 7 years of discussions on it, if anyone is inclined to re-live it again, have at it.

It's off season now.  Was commenting on the Boliever comment.  Those who were posting here, Max or Huskerpedia are well versed on that.  Intent wasn't to drag up old stories....We've both posted long enough that it'd be easy enough to do.  Was a positive statement about Rhule.  Took a while, but seems like we have the right guy now and  that everyone is behind.

I just wanna say thank you to Samaje Perine one more time for breaking melvin gordon's record set against us a mere week after being embarrassed by wiscy on national tv.

    So much this.

Crazy thing is we beat that Wisky team down the first meeting.  Can't remember if the championship game we had Cam Stache playing as  a DT because of injury.  Seem to remember comments after that game that dudes were playing for themselves.  Going off script etc...Just a sh!t show game...

You don’t expect any staff changes, but you expect Rhule to comment on who he wants to hire?

    Im confused.

I don't expect any changing ie he's not firing anyone.  Talking about changing responsibilities on the staff.  Potential hires (QB coach) and/or interns analysts.  Mentioned looking at rules concerning unpaid staff.

  19. I don't expect any staff to be let go, but I am interested to see what changes, if any, Rhule makes with assignments or potential hires.  He spoke to really examining all aspects and looking at what I assume are non-paid analysts to assist.  O really needs some help (TO's and QB play).

More than that, actually. 15 is the number of days for spring camp, but during bowl season practices are only subject to the same practice limits as during the regular season. So it can be more like another extra month of practice.

I read last year it was something between 12-15 practices.  NU missing 7 years of of bowls is 84-105 practices.....That is a crap ton of missed practices and missed opportunities.

Oh I agree with that. Just pointing out that it doesn't typically work like that in our free market job society we live in. Now, giving bonuses for doing well? Hell yeah. I could see that maybe, and that could be some good incentive. Probably not even within the "rules" (and we all know there aren't even any rules really anyway).

Coaching contracts should work like that but they don't.

    The bolded please.
