  1. We were jamming the receivers in second half and not giving them a free shot down the field. We have not seen defensive adjustments in years!

... which you can do if you have safety help over the top. It's fine to make that adjustment but it doesn't really make much sense to not do that in the first place.

Kind of like the Huskers opening up in a three-man front against Northwestern a couple years ago then switching back to the base defense after a few series (I guess two years does technically count as "years").

  2. Actually, after watching the game in depth, the line didn't play nearly as poorly as I originally thought. Kondolo was not very good - if there was a bust on the line, about 75% of the time it was him. And there were a few misses here and there but that's going to happen.

I'd say it was pretty much 50/50 if a failed run could be blamed on the line or the backs. There were missed blocks but there were also several times that the backs were slow getting to the hole, tentative or flat cut back away from where the play was going. And I don't think it helped that about 60% of our running plays were basically an inside zone run. BYU always had seven guys in the box and a safety was usually closing fast when we were in tight formations. Early in the second half when we were having more success we were also mixing things up a lot more - a reverse, a true option, running off tackle instead of between the guards.

  3. Final thoughts:

Really, we played pretty well in the first half. We mainly killed ourselves. The first four drives we moved the ball well - two TDs and the other two drives killed by penalties. Then we fumbled followed by the only other really bad possession. But we moved the ball again right before the half.

First possession of the second half was pretty bad but then we scored TDs on the next two. The next possession was wasn't good. Then the last three we basically went into a shell save the one deep pass to Reilly, which was a great call. Sure looked to be playing not to lose at that point.

  4. Defense - especially coverages - are somewhat hard to determine on TV but I think the main "adjustment" we made in the second half was to be in more of a Cover 1 look - one safety deep, especially on the trips side. We might have tightened up our coverage a little bit but you can also play more aggressive short when you know you have safety help over the top.

We got a little help from them, especially dropping a wide open swing pass on 4th down that would have at least been another FG attempt and might have scored on that play. We got a sack, an INT and a couple penalties at the right time to help stop their drives. We did play better overall but I think we just had better athletes and that showed more in the second half.

  5. Fourteenth Possession - 4:22 4th quarter

1&10, -30 - Offset I left, jet motion - fake sweep, Cross on the inside zone for 14

1&10, -44 - Shotgun doubles - Zone read, TA probably should have kept as the read defender made the tackle for no gain

2&10, -44 - Shotgun doubles - Fake WR screen and TA hits Reilly deep for 27

1&10, +29 - Offset I right, jet motion - fake sweep, Cross on the inside zone. Not much room against an 8 man box - there looked to be a little hole straight ahead but Cross bounced outside.

2&8, +27 - Shotgun TE trips left - Inside zone to Wilbon for 5

3&3, +22 - Offset I right, jet motion - Jet sweep to Turner. This play had no chance. Four defenders outside our tackle - two guys to block. Into the short side of the field Should have called timeout and tried something different.

    4&5, +24 - Missed FG

    6 plays, 46 yards.

The one creative play we ran went for a big gain. Very conservative play calling on the last three drives. Basically just running it into the line.

  6. Thirteenth Possession - 7:51 4th Quarter

1&10, -28 - Shotgun FB, HB left - Inside zone. Not much of a hole running into an eight man box but Newby hesitates and gets tripped up as he crosses the line

2&7, -31 - Shotgun TE trips left - Straight drop, TA hits Hovey on the curl for 6

3&1, -37 - Offset I right, TE motion left - Lead zone to Newby, Reeves and Utter confused on who picks up blitzing LB and Newby stopped before he gets started.

    4&4 ,-34 - Punt

    3 plays, 6 yards. 2 runs, 0 yards, 1 pass, 6 yards.

All of the sudden we're not very creative running the ball again. Last two possessions have been straight zone plays (plus QB sneak) out of tight formations. Not a lot of running room straight ahead against 7 or 8 guys in the box.

  7. Twelfth Possession - 14:00 4th Quarter

1&10, -31 - Offset I right, jet motion - Fake sweep, Cross on the inside zone. Kondolo falls down into Reeves knocking him down and Reeves guy makes the tackle

2&6, -35 - Shotgun spread right - WR screen to Reilly for 5

3&1, -40 - Spread right - QB sneak goes nowhere. So both the plays we ran at the end of the game had failed miserably earlier in the half.

    4&1, -40 - Punt

    3 plays, 9 yards. 2 runs, 4 yards, 1 pass, 5 yards.

Pretty much shot ourselves in the foot again.

  8. Eleventh Possession - 4:07 3rd Quarter

1&10, -20 - Shotgun TE trips right - Newby on the inside zone cuts back and gets about 10 but it's called back for an illegal block on Turner

1&12, -18 - Shotgun trips left - TA throws off the blitzing corner and hits Westy for 16

1&10, -34 - Doubles - Jet sweep to Turner. BYU reads it well and there are simply too many defenders to block. Makes the late Jet Sweep to Turner look that much worse.

2&10, -34 - Shotgun trips left - Straight drop, TA hits Morgan on the curl for 5

3&5, -39 - Shotgun tight doubles, Newby motion to trips left - Straight drop, Kondolo with another whiff. TA gets luck with a late, floating throw over the middle but hits Reilly for 10

1&10, -49 - Pistol offset I left - Lead zone left but Newby cuts back instead of following Janovich to the hole and gets stopped for no gain

2&10, -49 - Doubles, jet motion - Fake sweep. BYU blitzes and TA has to throw before Wilbon get set up for the screen.

3&10, -49 - Shotgun tight doubles - Straight drop, Newby misses the blitz pickup. TA has to scramble and throws a floater that is intercepted.

7 plays, 29 yards. Officially 2 runs for 0 yards, 5 passes for 31 yards

We pretty much kept shooting ourselves in the foot until we hit.

  9. Tenth Possession - 9:00 3rd Quarter

1&10, -38 - Offset Pro I right - Zone left was called but instead TA throws to Turner because of the soft coverage.

2&5, -43 - Shotgun trips left - Huge hole for Newby on the inside zone. Newby with a nice hesitation move to set up the block that cuts outside for 14

1&10, +43 - Shotgun bunch trips left - Fake end around to Reilly, Wilbon on the screen for 14 yards.

1&10, +29 - Shotgun TE trips right - Zone read, TA should have kept it but gave and lost 7. It was the wrong read but the play wouldn't have gone anywhere anyway as both Reeves and Kondolo missed blocks.

2&17, +36 - Shotgun trips right - TA hits Morgan on the curl. Morgan makes a nice move to get 14

3&3, +22 - Pistol doubles, jet motion - Fake sweep, traditional option. Nice fake pitch by TA and he gets 11 yards through a huge hole.

1&10, +11 - Pistol offset I left - Outside lead zone to Cross. Well blocked but Cross takes a long time to get to the line and the backside safety gets there to stop him for 2 yards.

2&8, +9 - Shotgun Ace - Straight drop. Great play design as TA finds Foster on the delayed release for the TD.

    8 plays, 62 yards. 4 runs, 20 yards, 4 passes, 42 yards.

Again, better variety of runs and run fakes. Easy throws for TA. Well blocked overall.

  10. Ninth Possession - 11:52 3rd Quarter

1&10, +35 - Pistol FB/TE right - Outside zone right. Big hole, Cross runs for 14

1&10, +21 - Shotgun spread right - Reverse to Reilly. Not very well blocked - Reeves, Westy and Utter all miss blocks - but Reilly still gets 11

1&G, +10 - Offset I left, jet motion left - Inside Power left, Newby for the TD

    3 plays - all runs - 35 yards.

Finally a little more creative with the running game. Pays off, even on one play that wasn't well blocked.

  11. Second Half

    Eighth Possession - 15:00 3rd Quarter

1&10, -25 - Shotgun trips left - Zone right, Newby picks up three. Decent push, small hole, Newby could have hit the hole harder

2&7, -28 - Shotgun doubles TE, HB right, jet motion right - Zone read, TA keeps. Trey Foster from the HB position tries to block across the formation but gets bumped off by the unblocked DE. There was a big hole to run through but the timing is off as TA bumps into Foster. TA picks up about 4 but a couple penalties negate the play.

2&17, -18 - Shotgun spread TE left - Straight drop, great protection. TA hits Westy on the cross for 7

3&10, -25 - Shotgun doubles motion to trips right - Straight drop, Kondolo whifs, TA throws under pressure to a covered Westy, incomplete

    4&10, -25 - Punt

3 plays, 0 yards. Officially 1 run for 3 yards, 2 passes for 7 yards.

Kondolo whiffed on the one block but it didn't change the play much. Other than that, a very good series by the OLine. Penalty killed the drive which came after the play was disrupted by Foster.

  12.

TE Brett Shepherd is visiting this weekend. No offer yet but we've been talking to him quite a bit recently. Unofficial visit.

    Rivals

    247

    He is 2017 actually
Both his Rivals and 247 profile say 2016.

The one Mav is referring to is an in-state recruit,

Unless he is talking about the athlete from Georgia who is three stars

Shepherd is from Georgia, Class of 2016, rated three-star by Rivals, not rated by 247.

  13. Using this message board's preferred pass defense stat, BYU had the 66th ranked pass defense last year. Mediocre, but not one of the worst in the nation. Not sure how that translates into one of the worst secondaries in the nation this season.

BYU was #114 in passing yards allowed per game last year. They have two defensive back starters back and two that basically didn't play for BYU last year - not sure if that is good or bad. :dunno

Not sure how that will translate to this year but they're currently #103 in the nation in passing yards allowed so that doesn't sound too good. chuckleshuffle
