Seems like the 2009 class was a lot of feast or famine. Who knows where we'd be without Rex and several other have been big contributors (Martinez, Randle, Sirles, Gomes and Kinnie with Ankrah, Martin and Green coming on late). However, there were quite a few that didn't do anything (I count 10 out of 20 that probably won't make much - if any - on-field contributions and it could be 11 if Pensick doen't get the nod at C).

We seem to have done pretty well with the JUCO guys lately. Hopefully a full year of being in Lincoln will get him ready to go.

On a serious note... what happened here and why was it inproper? When I was in school I had a part of a scholarship that included a book gratuity... it never ended up being spent on books but that's beside the point. Don't athletic scholarships fund books? If they don't they should
The problem is that they fund required books but not suggested other books. The bookstore was also giving them the optional books which is a violation (apparently).

Newsflash! Majority of top programs don't have a major airport in the city with direct flights... This shouldn't be a surprise considering Lincoln's population exceeds the majority of other D1 program cities. In the big 12 Lincoln was the 2nd largest city in the big 12 and in the big ten is technically the 3rd largest. However you don't see an advantage being gained by Northwestern(3rd busiest airport in the world) or Minnesota(30th busiest in the world) Where do recruits fly in for Penn State? Philadelphia? Pittsburgh.. either is more than a 100 miles a way. Trust me, we definitely are not in the minority when it comes to this issue. Usually college towns aren't in large cities which have direct flights which makes a lot of sense.
But the vast majority of Top 25 schools are a lot closer to large population centers so, as was mentioned above, they are a lot closer to a lot more recruits that don't have to fly at all or are closer to "major" airports.

Eh ... lies, damn lies and statistics.
As I've said, Bush was not great on spending by any means but I'm not sure about how they picked and chose what numbers to include. We've been well over trillion-dollar defecits for several years so to say Bush was responsible for basically the entire debt accumulated during his presidency while Obama is only responsible for about 20% during his doesn't seem to make sense to me.
Also, I'm not sure why some numbers are included on Bush's side but not Obama's.
- Obama doesn't get anything for Iraq and Afganistan? You can claim it was Bush's War but there was pretty wide support throught government at the outset.
- Defense spending increased some $42B in FY2009 and another $33B in FY2010 so I'm not sure how Bush gets docked $616B while Obama gets credit for decreasing the defecit $271B on defense.
- Non-Defense discretionary has also increased significantly in the last two years (by nearly 50%) but again Obama gets credit for reducing the defecit.
- Showing a health care reduction is sketchy at best. It isn't scheduled to be fully implemented until 2014 so it only counts for three years on the chart but may have longer-term implications that could be much worse. Plus, it looks like we're already having to abandon the CLASS Act part because it isn't fiscally sustainable. Makes me wonder what other parts won't add up how they're "supposed" to.

We havent even seen Reeves play...he redshirted.
I'm aware of that. But the reports out of practice were that he wasn't coming along very quickly.
-
I don't see how Pensick isn't the guy at center. He's the only other player to see playing time there as far as I can remember.
They've apparently been practicing Long there since Caputo got his DUI to prepare for the bowl game if Caputo couldn't end up going.
Pensick has been the backup for Caputo for what amounts to two years now though. And he did come in a couple times this year when Mike got banged up.
Very interesting though... Do they go with the backup or slide a guard who's started a full season over. I also realize I forgot to mention Jake Cotton above^^^ Should factor in at guard.
I've been hoping Reeves would deliver on they hype early and step right in to anchor the Pipeline for four years but that doesn't look too likely now. With how good he looked this year and how smart he apparently is, I could definitely see Long slide over and man that spot for the next couple years.

Our OLine has been a problem for a lot longer than Pelini has been here - unless you go back to his 2003 season as DC and then you'd probably be getting close. I thought last year's class was the best one we'd had in awhile but obviously we haven't seen a lot of it yet. The two guys we got today look like a solid continuation but getting Peat or another sold recruit would have even been better. However, those seven should set us up fairly nicely for the next four years or so.
I finally thought our OLine was turning the corner early in the year even though it was against lesser competition. We slid back for a couple games but I thought we finished strong so that gives me hope that we're headed in the right direction.
If you've got a really good OLine, you can do about whatever you want with the other six guys on the field.

My first thought was "We had touble being .500 in the Big XII, I can't imagine we'd make it in the B1G". But we've played noticably better since we got rid of some of the injuries and have broken 70 a few times. I'd say we make a run but come up short.

Sweet! Thanks.

And I would definitely go for a return to the stud DEs we seemed to crank out every year back in the day.

Someone was asking about defensive leaders for this coming year. Probably not Rose this time around but I'd bet he'll be there sooner rather than later.
-
All those stars is the other reason I thought we'd get Peat (the first being brother/cousin). Not that he'd shy away from competition but it's pretty crowded over there.

Not giving up until this poster is recognized for his contributions. He deserved a spot over me last year, so let's give him a spot this year
Second.
Your determination inspires me.

Based on my 5000+ posts, I didn't grow up AT ALL.
/ btw, I got relations in Pittsburg.
edit: In an attempt to be *slightly* less obnoxious.
I'm assuming you didn't get relations the way Forrest Gump would.

I'll bet next weeks lunch money that Standfor struggles without Luck. I look for them to drift back to the middle of the Pac over the next 2-3 years and eventually in the last 1/3 again.
Losing Luck and Harbaugh back-to-back years is tough to overcome. They had absolutely no one at WR so their offense has to go backwards some. But they do have a really good OLine ....

Locking up all the recruits from the Iowa game would have made everyone's day.

The difference between Ganz/Taylor and Martinez are the pieces they had around them offensively. Ganz, specifically, had at least two linemen that went to the NFL that year (Murtha/Slauson), a much better receiving corp (Swift, Pederson) and a guy like Mike McNeil who played pretty well in '08. I also think our '08 line was the most consistent/best line we've had in Pelini's tenure. They also had Lucky and Helu, and although Lucky never hit his potential here, both of those guys were far more experienced than our Burkhead/freshman running trio this last year.
I think a lot of the Martinez dislike comes down to his character, but I might be a little off base. I think some people mistake his lackadaisical demeanor and quiet tendencies with an "I don't care" attitude, which couldn't be further from the truth.
Heh, that's no kidding...just imagine if we had Swift & Peterson the last couple of years. Erasing the average 3 or 4 drops a game "really" could have made a difference. Lucky out of the backfield had glue hands too. Not a great "running" back but he could catch the ball.
Z. Lee would have loved to have had them too. Oh well......
Not just on players stats either - keeping drives going, time of possesion, etc.

That pretty much perfectly summarizes the problem with this board at this time. Real, glaring, obvious problems with major components of this team are presented, then summarily dismissed with a few words, one-liners or quips, yet we have an 11-page (and counting) thread agonizing over every detail of the play of one player.
Case in point: Talk about Martinez has now hijacked the Husker Extra recruiting chat ...
Martinez inspires some pretty strong feelings one way or the other. A lot of people say "well he's the QB and the next guy will get just as much sh!t" - but I don't remember Ganz, or Taylor dividing people so much. They were both better (or performed better) than Martinez, but not by such a wide margin that they should be free of ridicule.
With Martinez it's love/hate. Not many in between. You either think he will be successful here in the next 2 years, or you have come to the conclusion that he won't be (but I'm still hopeful, 1 in a million ). That's what being the starter for 2 years gets you...enough of an evaluation period that people have made up their minds one way or the other.
Been a long time since we had a 2 years starter with 2 years left. He's in a unique position.

You can't compare this class to all 120 schools (with Furman, Florida Atlantic, etc.). You have to compare it with its peers, which would be Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin. That's not even going out of conference.
I'm not saying we have to have 20 4/5 stars like Alabama, but this class.... is lacking relative to our peers', to say the least.
Rivals currently has us #3 in the B1G. No one below us has any five stars or more than four four-stars (we have six). Wisconsin is #7 (behind Purdue and Iowa). I'd say that is above average for our peers.
-
this doesnt have the look of a class that will "put us over the top" of course it is very tough to tell at this point. you cant fault people for being discouraged
Maybe not "over the top" by themselves but we've got a lot of good young guys already in Lincoln. If these guys can fill some spots and add a couple stars, we'll be in good shape.
-
Would be a lot worse if we didn't have a really nice OL class last year and a couple more good ones this year.
Still wish he would have chosen differently...

To me, 2 OL per year is basically the minimum so we just made it. I haven't heard anything more lately about a possible transfer from last year but we could go from 8 over the last two years (with Peat) which would have set us up really nicely for the next three years or so to possibly six which isn't bad but not great either.
I really like Moore and Sirles so I think we're in good shape at T for two more years (at least) but I'll bet we'll be looking for at least one next time around.
