It just doesn't seem like rumors at this point, but fact. The media should report on facts.

When Lee Barfnecht and Dirk Chatelain reported dirty facts, how did the fanbase receive them? what does the fanbase think about them right now?

Hey, i'm on the side of reporting what's happening if it only helps the program get better, even if its bad stuff and "dirty laundry". so i agree that the media needs to be more honest and forthright. they probably deserve all the backlash that's coming their way today. if they knew these were some of the key reasons why the past 4 years were an ongoing disaster, they should have reported on them. that's what a reporter does. instead, they had fluff piece after fluff piece, even thought they knew of these deep issues.

but then again, i can understand why they would do that. they have families to feed, and they need clicks.

I'm gonna go on my own little "rant" here. Some of the gossip and rumors about Frost may or may not be true. I'm going to choose to not believe any of it without further evidence. As some posters have stated above, of course Frost's firing was about wins and losses. Is it possible that personal habits and personal issues contributed to a culture that has led to so many losses? Sure. Is it likely that Frost was simply in over his head and was not capable of a job of this magnitude? Obviously. Is it likely that he stopped caring, decided to slack off, and agreed to take a lot less money if the writing was already on the wall? I don't buy that. Of course he cared, he had more blood sweat and tears in this program than just about anyone.

The simple answer is that Scott Frost tried and he failed. I'm not angry about it, I'm just sad. In comparison, I am still angry at Bill Callahan, because he tossed away so many of our old traditions and identities. I am still angry at Mike Riley (or at least at Eichorst for hiring him), because Riley never even deserved a shot at this job and never should have been here. But Scott Frost? Of course he deserved the shot. He belonged here. He not only recognized NU's history and traditions, but he was born into it, he lived it, and he delivered it as a player. He is the guy we all wanted when the time came. His shot was well-deserved, and it is absolutely horrible that it worked out the way that it did.

But bashing him now, spreading unverified rumors, attacking his character...all unnecessary. It wasn't just the losses? No, the losses were enough. Oh, and now Benning knows some dirt? F**k off. This was Benning's teammate. Frost was the guy handing Benning the ball in the Orange Bowl in what I think was Benning's only start after being a career backup. Frost embodies Nebraska more than Damon Benning ever has or will, and Frost was far more successful in the football business than Benning ever was, despite Frost's failures as head coach at Nebraska. I'm not even defending Frost's character. I don't know what the man has or hasn't done in his personal life. But I think it is time to leave him alone.

Tearing down Frost on a personal level is a bad look for anyone doing it. It doesn't make any of us better, it doesn't help the program, and it doesn't help us heal. Let's move on from Scott and see what Mickey can do.

Narrator: Benning wasn't actually airing any dirt about Frost. In fact, Benning was actually protecting frost, even though he knew all the dirt.

Damon Benning, my favorite muse, is going IN on a holier than thou rant this morning.

Just said we couldn't handle him telling what he knows.

    Ok, dude.

he does get that way sometimes, but to be fair to him, he's not entirely wrong.

you only need to see the reaction of people on forums to critical artices, or even the reaction when someone comes on the forum to give some not so glamorous info about the program. people don't even want to listen, they instead destroy the messenger. heck, even just pointing out that some specific coaches are bad at their jobs gets you burned at the stake. imagine what would happen if someone wrote about the rumours in the paper the week after we lost to illinois last year?

The answer is, the next three weeks likely weren’t worth the extra $7.5M it cost but it’s a strawman proposal because we don’t know for sure that it was even an option to use that money for things other than the buyout.

Hypothetically, a big donor approaches Trev, says here’s the extra $7.5M to do it now. Trev says yeah but in 3 weeks we could use that money more beneficially. Mr big donor wants to feel like he’s calling the shots and says no, now or never…..

The media money increases by what, $45M next year? It’s not like things aren’t getting paid for now. It was going to happen sooner or later. Sure it was a waste, unless things were happening we are unaware of, like everyone in the program knowing it was a foregone conclusion…oh wait, we did know that. I think the best thing for the program was to start looking forward instead over treading water for a few more weeks over what amounts to chump change for the program. It also sends a message to potential coaching hires that winning is what matters here and they will be taken care of monetarily. They won’t get jerked around over a few mill but they damn well better win.

im not sure why this is so hard to understand for some. Sometimes there are things more important than money.

No matter how you slice it, that's $7.5 million to fire Frost 3 weeks earlier than otherwise. That's it, just 3 weeks. $7.5 million that is now unavailable to the program going forward.

Again, it's not $7.5 million to fire Frost, it's $7.5 million to fire him 3 weeks earlier. 3 weeks wasn't going to cost any more fans.

No matter how you slice it, 7.5mill just isn’t a factor when it comes to making the right decision once you know it is the right one at that level. Delaying it to save 7.5 mil isn’t the smart financial decision you think it is.

I find that extremely unlikely, but I'll eat my words if Trev has a new HC hired in the next 3 weeks. But I think we're going to end up waiting until the end of the season just like every other team that fires a coach this season.

None of that is a good reason not to wait 3 weeks. The same booster paying the same amount gives Trev an additional $7.5 million for hiring new coaches. We'll find out over the next few weeks and months but this just seems like a rash decision.

No. At that level, with everything at stake, $7.5m is just not what you think it is.

at the very least, when a yearly revenue of over 150mil, 7.5 mil would not be a reason to delay doing the right thing the moment you know it is the right thing to do.

trevs decision says it’s not about the money. As it shouldn’t.

  7. Just now, RedDenver said:

I'm sure that's the case but not being able to convince the pressure that it's worth a few weeks of waiting is on Trev.

No, Trev is incompetent for firing Frost at this point in time. He should have either done it after last season or waited 3 weeks for Frost's buyout to be reduced by $7.5 million.

I don’t know. That seems a bit of a stretch if you don’t consider the reasoning. What if a booster paid it? What if the athletic dept loses $20 mil over the season if frost remains? What if he was talked out of firing frost last year?

1 - That would be swell for Frost but dereliction of duty by Trev

2 - There is really no way this work.

3 - I feel this is the leader in the clubhouse.

Trev is incompetent for firing Scott frost? Just trying to understand.

Our image nationally is way worse than we think.  Fan base included.  We  are not a power on or off the field anymore.  WE will have earn position in the peckng order again.  No one is going to give us anything until we earn something.  Throw all the money in the world at Urban or Stoops, they are not coming here right now.  This job requires alot of work and time hitting the recruiting trails.  Offer them alot of money, offer them what ever they want, but this job is tougher now than ever.  Notre Dame losing today keeps that door open.  They won't wait and see what happens.  If they lose another game or two, Urban will go there next season.  Stoops is not interested in coaching college football again.  Better be happy if we could get Leipold, Klieman, or O'Brien to even listen to an offer.  I think we are further away than ever.

Truth be told.  We have tried to get bigger names, and have failed.  We have offered to big time guys, and been shunned.  Why did we end up with Callahan?  Pelini? Riley?  Frost is the only guy who wanted this job and it may have cost him a career.   He won games at UCF.  He turned around a program.  He did it with his guys coaching.  Most of them were forced out of here by our leaders or fan base.  We like to beat on him for hiring his buddies, but from what I am seeing his buddies were better coaches than what he replaced them with.  Really, think about it.  At least we won 4 games in one season with Frost's buddies.  No one see's this job as a great one, even assistant coaching positions.  We are not getting elite talent from any angle.  Coaches or players.

I don’t think we should care at all what the image is right now.
a lady who needs cpr doesn’t care about a random hand on her chest.

  10. It’s not a bad scheme. We’ve just had bad positional coaches on the front 7. Last year and prior, we had decent talent/gamers to help minimize bad coaching. This year, not so much.

in general though, this staff has always suffered from a very poor attention to detail on both sides of the ball and that’s why they’ve lost so much.

So, Frost keeps it under wraps till the media starts asking about it.  Then, he mentions it and the player is upset that it got out.  And....you don't understand why Frost doesn't talk about injuries more to the media?

It’s one thing to not talk about it. It’s another to actively try to hide it or cover it up, and worse still, play an injured kid as if he wasn’t injured with little or no game plan adjustments. All so that… the media doesn’t find out? That’s just weird to me. Like, why would you devote so much time and attention to playing smoke and mirrors with the media?

If it is a race thing by the kid or the coach, then it’s BS on whichever party holds that view. That’s enabling racism by removing Ruud to insert Joseph, if that’s the perception.

From the BellWest coach, “if Joseph was there, then Helms and Johnson would be at Nebraska.” If he’s certain those two would be at Nebraska for Joseph then what’s the deal with bagging on Ruud checking in on Omaha? Is Helms moving to WR in college?

His quotes don’t jive with the Huskerboard rumors.

if helms and johnson are offensive skill players, it's not inconcievable to see that Mickey Joseph, who has a proven track record with skill position players, would have done better. unless there's something i'm missing.

Some thoughts that may not be related to the more recent discussion in this thread.

We're just in such a weird position; we went 3-9, so it would almost be hard to not do better than we did this season. But the bar is so obviously much higher than "just doing better than 3-9."

When Walters was fired and Lubick was brought in I said that I didn't think the move would make that much of a difference on offense. And it wasn't because I thought Lubick was a bad coach - I thought he was a good coach and I still do.

But I'm pretty sure I was right about that call, changing OCs didn't really put a dent in the outcome of games because it was more about turnovers and poor offensive line play then, and it still is now.

Now I'm asking basically the same question again: How much does adding Mark Whipple really do for the W/L column? I saw a post that was quoting some social media post or YouTube video saying something along the lines of "Mark Whipple is the kind of addition that will make this offense score 50 points per game."

I just really, really doubt that...

As far as I can see, based on who the new coaches are, the main benefits here that will address specific weaknesses are: attention to detail on offense, better recruiting at skill positions, and hopefully better line technique. It could also help with a true identity on offense and an ability to counter opponent adjustments.

so for me, if everything else stays the same, that means an additional 3 wins at a minimum.

These changes so far do not address the issues of defensive inconsistencies at times, special teams, head coach maturity, head coach ownership and accountability, and proper roster management.

I still wouldn’t mind getting rid of an LB coach for the ST coach.

    My choice would be Dawson.

Probably unpopular, but coach Dawson has done a better job than coach Ruud, in my opinion.

Again, if you think there's chaos in Lincoln now, imagine how much more chaotic it would be if we were hiring a new HC and then both the offensive and defensive staffs. You can't claim that a HC search and following offensive and defensive staff searches would be less chaos than only hiring an offensive staff. Well, I guess you could claim that, but it'd be nonsensical.

No it wouldn’t because a new coach finding and hiring a new staff is considered standard practice. A lame duck coach looking for top line assistants in his area of expertise for a 1 year contract is chaotic.

it’s not particularly mathematical. Chaos doesn’t necessarily increase because there’s more positions to fill. Filling out the entire staff makes it more straightforward. When it comes to coaching staffs, Trying to hire 4 people for 5/6 roles is more chaotic than a blank slate of 10 people for 11/12 roles. This current head coach’s deficiencies makes things worse.

Because other people have free will and are not required to do what Nebraska leadership wants regardless of leadership quality. Look around the college football landscape right now and you'll see that lots of places are struggling to hire coaches or retain coaches. No matter how good the leadership is, an OC candidate can suddenly be looking at HC offers if there's a lot of turnover at other schools that has nothing to do with NU or how they're conducting their coaching search.

I think you are confusing “chaos” with “talent search”.

chaos is what Nebraska went through after solich was fired. Chaos is whatever seems to be going on in Lincoln now. Talent searches are always ongoing for any and all coaches with talent. Any decent coach will get headhunters calling them every offseason.

  18. 2 hours ago, RedDenver said:

For everyone complaining about the chaos and uncertainty of hiring the offensive staff, imagine how much more chaotic it would be if we were hiring a new HC and then both the offensive and defensive staffs.

Why would hiring a new full staff be chaotic? The amount of chaos depends only on the quality of leadership in charge of the hiring.

Was ranked 14th last year and beat 11 BYU who had Zach Wilson as QB.  As a team rushed for approx 275 yards.  But Frost only had Auburn on his resume IIRC.  Maybe USF was ranked when they played.  And I wouldn’t make P5 or ranked teams a primary criteria.  If so, further proof Frost should have been fired.

I’m right there with you, cos I think frost should have been fired immediately after Minnesota.
I would say p5/ranked experience should absolutely be a criterion. Not needing that experience from assistants is how we got here in the first place.
