Yeah I def thought it constituted targeting.  You can clearly see the defender launch (no wrapping of the arms) as well as lead with the crown towards the head and neck area of the receiver.  Easy call imo.  I follow/like MF but sometimes he has some hot takes.

According to PJ Fleck, the Big Ten has acknowledged that targeting should have been called.  ""The fumble with Michael Brown-Stephens, whether I agree or disagree, it does not matter now," Fleck said. "We did turn that in to the Big Ten, and they give you an explanation, and typically, 'Here's the explanation. I'm sorry.' That's it. That's basically what it is."

Which at this point is fair. But Maryland was even more of a guaranteed win than either of those, so I wouldn't guarantee anything this year.

Yeah, you aren't wrong, but then Maryland whipped PSU, so maybe they were better than we all thought.

The Gophers can't play defense, but at least we can count on the running game.

I mean, it's silly,  but doesn't this stuff just eat at you @everybody knows my name? I know it eats at Iowa fans being constantly disrespected like this.

    @Mavric

Your link is broken,  you wanted this one I think:

Eh, whatever.  It's part of being a Gophers fan.

There were several people around here who would chime in with some derivation of "we're now Minnesota" when bemoaning the Huskers' lack of success over the last 20ish years.

Oh, I get it now.  Your whole post makes more sense in that context.

I struggle to root for fellow big ten west brethren. I really don’t think their success helps us in any way.

    Am am I wrong?

Some people think I'm a pollyanna for cheering for our conference mates, but I think it's always good for all the teams in a conference if the conference is able to flex and show its power.  Of course it doesn't feel very meaningful if you're still stinging from the regular season and got vaseline running down your inner thigh.

If you know what I mean.

  6. Last year you won four games.  This year you won five games, and came very close to upsetting #17 Iowa in the final week.  Don't fret; your team is getting better.  Don't hope for too much, too soon.  Your disappointment this year is the product of a hype-letdown.

Scott Frost is a respected coach and he's going to build you a better team.  It's already happening.

  7. Johnson's team (SMB) is in a dogfight with ROCORI High for the Minnesota 3A title.  ROCORI is led by QB and LB Jack Steil, who happens to be a Nebraska baseball commit.  Small world. ROCORI, incidentally, is the alma mater of tomorrow's Gameday guest picker Eric Decker.

Anyway, they're currently tied 7-7 in the 3rd quarter.

I for one appreciate that you and the other Minnesota guy were pretty chill after our game. Stick around, it's nice to get another perspective and input.

But with that being said, we're still a little too proud of a fanbase to take a "congrats on 5 wins, it'll get better" as anything other than condescending. I'm pretty sure you didn't mean it that way, but that's how some will take it - not that it matters.

    What's your Iowa prediction?

Yeah, but that fifth win makes 2019 an improvement over last year, And as Minnesota fans know, in a bad season you take good news wherever you can find it.

As for Iowa, beat those jerks into the dust.  If you can.  But it’s going to be tough.  Epenesa is a monster.

  9. Gee, what a bunch of grouches.  I’ve been secretly cheering for the huskers ever since our teams played.  A few weeks ago I predicted three more wins for you and I’ve surprised myself by being sorry each time your boys lost.  I also urged you guys not to get down on Frost, because I really think he’s going to do great in the long term.

This board has been really friendly and welcoming.  Don’t hate me now just because my downtrodden team has finally won a few games!

  10. Well, I did predict a couple of wins that didn't happen, but I also predicted to this downcast lot that your 2019 would be an improvement over 2018, and it is.  Congratulations on win #5.  Now you can stick your snoots in the air (or as they say in England, 'keep your pecker up') and feel good about 2020.

    Have a great Sunday!

No one on this board is calling for Frost’s head...No one...however, Frost must soon realize that he and his team of coaches do not have the full respect of this team because instead of coaching these players and exercising some tough love...they choose to pamper them and let them feel like there are no consequences for their stupid actions. Why else would Khalil Davis continue to commit stupid undisciplined unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Our OL is overwhelmed against any team with a pulse. So, two years in, what exactly have these coaches who are being paid VERY GENEROUSLY accomplished...we are still getting blown out by supposedly inferior teams.

I didn't say don't call for Frost's head.  I said don't get down on him.

  12. For what it's worth...Minnesota football coach Murray Warmath was lynched in effigy on the Minnesota campus in 1959, when the Gophers went 2-7.  Then in '60 and '61 the Gophers went to the Rose Bowl, and were crowned national champs following the '60 season.

Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer posted a losing record four times in his first six years in VT before piling up 13 seasons of ten or eleven wins in the next 17 years.

Don't get down on Frost in the early going.  He'll get it together if you're patient.
