So Bo Pelini can win 9-10 games a year with no talent, but Riley will need 1.5 years to get the talent needed to get passed 6 wins?

Any way you slice it, it's hard to get past this point.
Why do you guys consistently try to misrepresent the talent that Bo had on the team and act like we won't notice?

He had NFL caliber running backs EVERY YEAR he was here. He had Suh and some of the nastiest DBs early on and one of the best LBs in the NFL. He won 9 games last year and had three most talented players on the team drafted. Three cornerstone players the offense and defense were absolutely built around.

But by all means, continue to act like Bo coached with no talent.

Can't give Bo credit for winning 9-10 games every year, but we can sure blame him for only a 5 win team that he didn't even coach.

Can't make this stuff up. Some of you actually think this way.

Harry Harry Harry - Everybody here gives Bo credit for his 9-10 win's it's the other stuff that he get's credit for also

Let's not ignore Bo and Co's ineptitude recruiting that put us in this situation partially as well.

    Riley owns 5-7. Period

    Sker

You love to talk about 5-7. If this was an ongoing them for him to have records like that at NU then fine. Why don't you take Bo's 4 losses each year and add up the total points lost by and compare that to Riley for year one - I haven't done the math but not sure that the two coaches would be that are apart. If Riley goes 15-21 in the first 3 years than your argument may stick. Period

Go look at Hughes' history recruiting. its laughable. Dude needs to go.

Also, anyone that has been coaching for 35 years and has never been anything more than a D-line coach sans a 2 year co-defensive coordinator role, probably lacks ambition. Must have the personality of a wall.

Damn Milt Tenopir and George Darlington for not having ambition to be a coordinator and content at being a position coach for 30 years.

So true - should have fired them after year one.

What level do you coach at....

Probably the same as you. Seeing as this is a message board, 95 percent of the posters are not involved in coaching and are just fans who want to see this team do well. If I was bashing a coach who had success this year or in general, I could see your comment having some merit. But since you are probably some division one coach, lets hear your actual insight. And next time use a question mark, those periods make you look like a junior high girl texting her bff.

Nope just a fan. You are bashing a coach that had success. Typically when you see a good run defense you think line and when you see a good pass defense you think DB's - now we know it takes both, however I would say that our run defense was pretty good this year compared to the guy that new how to defend against the run last year. It's not perfect however headed in the correct direction.

  5.

No one knows. Hell for still we know it was a distraction throw out there by Riley trying to divert some attention off the Purdue turd

This. It's pretty genius actually. Get fans to debate the unknown rather than discuss the flop that just happened.

Almost as genius as when he was first hired and got people on board when he raved about our oline depth and the 10 guys they can play without losing a step, how he's excited to incorporate a running qb into his offense, and how he will adapt his system to the strengths of the team. All of which we now know to be a lie.

    He's old but very clever.

This is the funniest post ever!!!

Not really....Not sure that Riley would waste his time thinking about some of the dumb things that certain FANS debate.

  7. Personally, if Hank Hughes misses on all his targets this cycle he shouldn't return. Hell I could have coached two NFL caliber DTs. Sure as hell didn't do much with the DEs.

Not sure we would have liked the results.....

    Hopes:

    Huskers 100

    Creighton 0

That's from the last time in Omaha except you have the scores turned around

IIRC, both Nebraska and Creighton made the NCAA tournament that year, so even if that happens I think both of us would be okay with it should the same end result hold.

I think both teams are a year away. If Nebraska is going to get a win this would have to be the year. Because next year Creighton is going to be taking a big step forward with two studs they have redshirting this year and not really losing anyone from this year's team.

Funny you say that. I see NU winning 3 of the next 4 with the guys that we have just added......

    Still feel that way??

That's funny you ask that - get back to me the morning after their next meeting and I can give you a solid answer - but to answer your question I still think i'm 50/50 good on my statement.

  10. Nothing but upside/opportunity here for us. For all the negative comments about having to play UCLA again ... think about how much it would suck to play a bad, 5-7 Husker team you've beat up the last few times you played them.

We didn't deserve a bowl and get to play a much better team with a better record, a chance to give them some payback ... and in a good recruiting area against a great QB. I would love to play someone we hadn't played in a while as well but dang ... with how bad this season went I can't believe how many folks think we deserve more/better.

Ya, I know ... you are the greatest fans on earth. Geez.

You also. Tell me a team that has a better win/loss record or the same record with a better APR that is NOT getting a chance......

  11. Kevin Williams getting a 6th year is a waste. I'm ready for some young guys to step in. He's probably hoping Maliek leaves so he can finally be a "Starter".

Sorry you feel that way. Guy has been injured and will show more than he has if he can become healthy. He should be our starter next year and even if he doesn't his added depth will be welcomed.

  12. What are chances we are going to 3-4. Im starting to think its more and more likely. Bit easier finding good LBs than good Dlinemen. Would make sense with our location and recruiting obstacles.

I've had this same thought for awhile. Just a few random quotes and the sheer numbers that we seem to be after on the line and LB make me think it could be the vision - Banker may have a desire to try something new, however wasn't happening in year one with our LB depth...Also the extra LB would help the secondary.

  13. Nebraska fans are so thin skinned... it's almost incredible.

I think the "us vs. the world" idea has been blown completely out of proportion the last few years. People looking to find fault take it and try to say it means WAY more than it actually does.

It's simply supposed to be a quick way to convey the idea that the only people who really have your back are your teammates and coaches. It doesn't mean that EVERYONE else is against you, just that you can't necessarily count on them to always be supportive and thus shouldn't necessarily take what they are complaining about too seriously.

Unless you're winning every game by three touchdowns (and maybe not even then), there are going to be people complaining. It's just part of the deal. "Us vs. the world" is just a way to remind you not to get distracted by the negativity.

Case in point, this is one of Benning's responses to someone asking about TA's post:

Now, are people going to make the argument that the Huskers of the mid-90s had an unhealthy attitude flowing through the program that needed to be cleansed?

But the glaring difference is Bo Pelini was the driving force of "Us Against The World" his 2 leaked audio tapes give testimony to that. You don't think that that kind of mentality has a psychological impact on a young adult playing football at a major program like Nebraska? I dislike how Benning has to chime in with his whole, "We did this in the 90's..." They didn't have to deal with social media back then or BBS a lot of things didn't exist back then so it's unfair to compare today to the glory days. I really believe Bo psychologically screwed with his players' emotions/heads and its a virus that has to be absolved.

    Someone call Jack Stark

The only fans who felt insulted by the first leaked tape were the ones to whom the shoe fit.

The second tape had nothing to do with fans.

  14. I've been trying to figure out what the coaches see in TA since spring. It's obvious - and has been for some time - that he lacks the skills that QBs need to run Langsdorf's system. That's why I was surprised how quickly he "won" the job.

Now it's entirely possible - and accurate to a large extent - that TA does more things better than the other guys we have now. But it's also true - from many media reports - that the other guys didn't get nearly as much of a chance.

Here's my assertion of how things went after the new coaches came on board.

TA was a two-year starter. He played well in the bowl game (the first game the new coaches saw as our coaches). By all accounts, he's popular with the team. And he has good leadership qualities.

The new coaches knew they had a lot of work ahead of them to get their system in place. It doesn't make any sense to try to get 3-4 QBs ready to play. You have to pick a guy - two at max - and get them as many reps as possible. TA was obviously well ahead of everyone else in playing time and years in college. And he has the physical tools. Pretty easy to say "he's our guy, we just need him to work on a few things and learn the system." Thus, he's getting the vast majority of the reps all spring and fall.

Then you have Fyfe. He's the kind of guy you would expect to be a good back-up from an NFL point of view. He's a veteran compared to they other guys. He has more game experience. He doesn't have the highest ceiling but you expect ( :o ) him to be able to come in and run the show if needed (which you're hoping to not have to do).

So the coaches were forced to make quick decisions and they went with the most logical choices. Those guys get all the reps and the other guys get the scraps. Can't blame them - really no other way to go.

But now things are different. The entire team knows the system (more or less). There isn't the demand to keep installing new things. They can work on the things they need to get better at. And you can give more time to the backups. That leaves a wider door open for someone else to make a move. You add all that to the lack of success TA had this year plus however the sexual assault and walking out of practice play into it and I think (hope) POB has a great chance to push for a starting spot.

It would be quite a feat for a true freshman to unseat a fifth-year senior who's a three year starter. But I've also been reading between the lines whenever Riley or Langsdorf talk about TA. All the way back for 11 months. Spring practice, fall camp and through the year. They always talked about how he's a competitor. How he's a leader. How's he bounces back from mistakes. You almost never heard them come out of a practice saying "Tommy really threw the ball well today." Or "Tommy is really running the offense great." It's always been about the intangibles. Those are all well and good. But at some point it has to translate into actual performance. It does in flashes - TA's problem has never been that he can't do what's asked of him. It's always been that he can't do it consistently enough.

It'll be interesting to see if TA can make some progress and hold off the competition or if the coaches are really looking for someone to make a push for the job.

This post is spot on - especially "he's popular with the team"

coaching staff couldn't take a chance in the beginning of losing the players by benching one of the teams favorite guys

  15.

I don't buy the argument that the coaches are responsible for making Tommy throw deep. There are multiple routes being ran at one time and Tommy is the one that decides where to put the ball. Sure, he might be told to look at one route more then another but probably isn't instructed to throw just to that guy.

I keep seeing everyone say that the coaches didn't call plays that complemented Tommy's strengths. What exactly are Tommy's strengths?

    Running

I guess we have one more RB next year then!!!!

  16.

I am not a huge fan of the grad transfer move especially when you have a guy who has a ton of experience.

I get Tommy took a step back near the end of the season, but I still think he has to be our starter.

Instead of forcing Tommy to be a Pro-style QB, maybe Danny needs to change his playcalling a bit to take advantage of Tommy's skills.

So change Tommy's position? He's not a good qb. He doesn't even read option well. His best runs are on outside qb runs where the fb and hb lead block.

    THIS^

    - Just have to sell the team on the fact that Tommy is a leader just not from the QB spot.....

  17.

Tommy makes a ton of mistakes. Always has. Chances are he can cut down on them somewhat. Problem is, we depend on him to win games as the focal point of the offense.

If we bring in a freshman and expect him to not make a bunch of mistakes as well, we better have him be more of a "game manager" until he gets seasoned.

I'm more concerned if POB starts that our defense will need to be much much better in order to put him in good positions to manage the game, not have to "win it" every play; which I feel like is a huge problem w TA. He plays like he has to win the game on every play.

Ya well TA doesn't have to win it either he just chooses too. The offense is geared to help him out but when he's making throws he's not supposed to. Then that's on him. Not the coaches.

Would you say asking Tommy Armstrong to throw 40+ times a game is gearing an offense to help him out?

If you think the play makers on our offenses are in the receiving group - then YES
