Dang didn't even think about how this recession stuff could affect kids walking on. If you're able to get a free education somewhere at the moment it's worth taking it. Though the new tuition free deal should boost it some.

This is likely or it is possible that when they stand next to the young high star guys they see that the fight may be too big

I'm not sure how the NCAA is going to look at the free tuition and then being a walk-on for football.  If it doesn't count towards the 85 rule, then why wouldn't we offer a lot of really good players whose family qualifies for the free tuition to walk-on?  They wouldn't be on as big of scholarship, but it would be a big help.

Unless player offers that idea you are rolling a pretty big dice hoping it goes your way

@GBRFAN, as a 55 year old, I think I have the maturity to weather the growth pains.  What concerns me is if Frost is truly dialed in to what the core problem/solution and then secondly, is the fan base will be patient.

Hopeful still here.  Thanks for your interaction.

I'm right there with you - 52 and graduated in 95 right at the peak. A lot has changed in this world and college sports

    3 things SF has going:

    - He's very intelligent has been around several successful football leaders

    - He has experienced the NU fishbowl at the peak

    - college sports are still king and queen in Nebraska

Our fans only have one choice - they can like it or not like it but there is only one choice.

I get your point ... and honestly, this does help me with the frustration in my mind.

So, I want to pose a question for you @GBRFAN, and maybe I can better grasp it all ...

Why do you think then, that we have not over recruited the 7 on D and the 6 on O?  For me, it's been clear that to "restore the order" we have to get back to the trenches.  Yet, we continue to get the additional skill player, rather than another prospect in the trenches.  Why would we trust this important area to "walk-ons" and not put our best foot forward in who we can really select and develop in a real offer.

To me, this is similar to passing on a 6th or 7th round pick in the NFL draft and just trust and hope that a few guys that you sign to your practice squad will rise to the top.  To me ... that just doesn't seem smart ... IF YOUR VIEW REALLY IS THAT YOUR PROBLEM IS IN THE TRENCHES.

So, this part in Frost's strategy has been puzzling to me personally.  FYI, I like some of the guys he's brought into the trenches ... but I don't fully know or believe that they are being developed as well as a place like Wisky or a second tier team like Iowa ... we seem to rank lower than these teams in that area ... as I see it.

Any Input?  Thanks for the time.

    Great post and questions

The 85 limit is always going to make you feel a few players short somewhere.

The difference between NFL and college recruiting is puberty.  There are a lot of potential "kids" that are under the radar (recruits hype ramps up at 16) - this concept effects strength/size positions mostly.

SF has settled in for the long haul - one of the things that a lot of new coaches do is "chase wins in years 2-3" if SF was to do this he may have grabbed a higher ratio of big guys to solve his problem of "other big10 teams looking bigger then us" - however frost has shown that 4/5 year cycle in roster mgt/ratio is important to his 7-20 yr plan.

Development shows up in the trenches somewhere around junior year  - the 2018 class is questionable 19/20 much better 21 seems to be close - a couple more studs would be nice.

I feel like lineman have about  50/50 hit/miss ratio and I put this back to the kids that "pop" to early are not your best recruits.  Example kid from okl about 5 years ago (jailyn??) Was committed to okl or some bigger school and his numbers fell and he decided to come here - was a total bust...

Wiscy has been using our approach for 15 years now - give our program time.

Great....so we are waving the white flag on offensive rebounds.  Glad to know that.

I think last year thst was the case - its a numbers game if you crash and have a 10% chance of a rebound but you create a 15% chance of a fast break then you back away.  As the team gains size the % will change and so will positioning of the players on missed shots

Not at all.  It's not tough to play in front of a crowd that doesn't have a lot to cheer about after the first quarter....unless you think our fans are going nuts when the team is down 35-0 at half.  Obviously sell outs don't guarantee a win.

Guessing you don't visit memorial stadium often - besides the recent game against Ohio st - i cant compare the stadium to anything that you said.

At this point, any win we can find is important, no matter who we play. Lets hope we have bottomed out but flattening the inverted curve is still in question.

I have been bullish about the program until this shutdown and felt good until I read they basically couldnt even work out etc. ......

...... while every other team in the country practices at full capacity.

Seriously all team's are filling the effects - heck NU is probably still using a delivery program for meals.

Because they are better than Nebraska. I know thats a weird way to put as far as fit, but I think thats the difference.

SF disagrees he has special rings that they can only dream about

  9. Let me strart by saying that the biggest key to NU returning to successful will be and is the front 7 on D and the front 6 on O.  However SF and company truely believe in the walk on program and are looking for depth and starters out of it.  It is easier to take a walk on trench player and create something tghen it is with a skilled player and make them faster / couple that with the fact that we take thinner skilled players which will get injured easier.

Long story short - SF will always over recruit skill players and under recruit the trenches by 1 or 2 each class.

  10. If there are games this fall - NU will show that they use TE  as good as Iowa. Remember SF has had success with the position - this will be the first year that he has had a chance to show case the mismatch advantage at NU

What's our record at home the past three years?

We have sucked over the past three years - this wouldn't be the way to determine my statement

NU sells out weekly and our attendance is way above most of our opponents- unless you think our fans are cheering for the other team.

This is a silly subject to debate

Why is the last sentence wrong?  I think would still have been the starting point guard. Put that better talent around him and he has a much better chance to show really what he can do.

Does he think that list of teams interested in him have better talent?  Are they going to play against better talent?  If he’s not willing to compete for the starting job at his second school, dies he think the NBA is going to be more impressed at his  third?  How about a forth?

I think CM was let go - he made decisions that werent team first.  The talent level this year will be much higher then last.  Some kids work harder when a challenge is presented - some fold.

247 does that every year, here is the one at the end of September last year (didn't see one yet for 2020)

It isn't as telling as you think, at least not in any sort of a make Nebraska look any better at development sort of way.  We're still ranked #4 in the conference in star rankings even with all the attrition prior to last year. I suspect that's only been maintained with the 9/10 4 stars from the 2020 class.

Thxs for the info - didn't know such a thing was available.  I was taking it a step further and giving each player a factor rating based on their yr of eligibility - basically saying a 4* Sr is more valuable then a 4* Fr .

I have finished NU (which took longer then I expected) SO not sure if I will do the other West teams....

And we out recruit our conference foes year in and year and still lose......My first and most honest assessment is a complete lack of player develop.....BUT it is also a combination of players who had 3 different HC's, multiple coordinators, multiple position coaches, scheme and techniques....It is hard not to be 100% honest as a fan and realize that NU football has been a sh!t show for quite some time.  Regardless of Frosts record this year or next, looking at our dismal record, you wonder if holding the line for the duration of his 7 year contract is the best if not only course we have....

Yes and no - NU attrition has been terrible I'm working on some big10 team rankings based on current rosters it should be telling.  Frost has also red shirted a crazy high % based on the situation he is in.

I know none of us can fully understand what is happening in a kid's life.  But, to me this is a prime example of :bang with the constant transfers in college basketball.

Here is a kid that has a dream of going to the NBA.  He's a really good player. He probably has the raw talent to get there some day.  He obviously tried to go to the NBA this year and it's not goin to work out.

So...his only option is to transfer and probably sit out a year.  He basically delayed fulfilling his NBA dream by at least a year. The only way he didn't is if he gets a waiver from the NCAA which, who knows what criteria they use for making up their minds.

He could have stayed in a program and develop with the players around him and played another year in a very competitive league to showcase his talents.

Everything you mention is true except last sentence - now with different behavior the last sentence could be possible. When I heard that the three sit out players hadcbeat the starters upibdidnt know that it was with 2 walk ons and it happened regularly by many points - so guessing cam macks attitude was taking into  effect who would be the starting 5 next year....

a lot of the times being a udfa is better than being a 7th round pick. It means a team wasn’t able to fill all it’s hole and now they can go attempt to get what they feel is the best available player at a position of need. Lots of guys have success after going undrafted

Being a 7th round pick is better in the fact that they wanted you sooner udfa means they wanted you 8th 9th or 10th - now there is a benefit to being udfa  and that is if you get multiple offers you ( the player) get to pick your team

Why is Wingo a douchebag?  For reporting something Burrow has been telling people?  One can argue Frost is the douchebag in this scenario for not recognizing talent and improving the team when he had a chance.

That would be an interesting argument and a waste of time - do you know the definition of douchebag?

As others have stated, the ultimate blame for Burrow not being a Husker is due to Pelini and Beck.  They were the ones who didn't recruit Burrow in the first place.  Nobody expected Burrow to blossom to what he did in his senior year, and any blame on Frost for not bringing him in as a transfer is 20-20 hindsight.

Also - SF has shown every sign that he is doing the long approach to getting where he wants this to be.  Bringing in a transfer QB for 1 season doesn't do much for us.

I have the feeling Burrow is fostering this narrative in the media over the last year.  And, quite frankly, I don't blame him.  He really wanted to play for Nebraska and we thumbed our noses at him.  He's on top of the world and has no problem throwing it back at us.

I think he has a chance to be a very good QB in the NFL.  However, his WRs and OL made him look great last year.  Cincinnati better invest in some good ones, or his talents are going to be wasted there just as much as they would have been at Nebraska.

This is a very good take.  It will be interesting if AM returns to be a top 5 QB this year and JB stumbles at the next level.
