  1. Even if we only win one more game, Mike Riley and Co will most likely last through at least next year. I don't necessarily feel that we should even be debating firing him 5 games into his 1st year. That being said, there are threads that are talking about it so hypothetically if he were fired between now and the end of the season, who do we go after? Keep in mind I'm just being hypothetical so there's no need to defend why Riley should not be fired on this thread.

Thats the most intelligent question that can be asked right now, and the other defense any person would have defending this staff right now. I was thinking one more year with Bo Pelini even though I was sick of him. The reason I said one more year is bc I was afraid of this happening, and I thought maybe once he had great DT's his defense might work. Some people don't understand how bad of shape we are in right now.

  2. Yesterday's performance has me, a pretty mellow, "give the new guy a chance - one year is not enough" and "we can't afford (reputation and continuity, not $$$) another coaching change" kind of guy. But I found myself lamenting that there really is no way out at this point.

Then I read through several of the posts in various threads and a scenario began to form in my head.

Unless this team continues to implode and we start seeing not only losses, but blowouts and teams giving up, I don't see any publicly acceptable reason to release this staff after one year.

So here is the storm. With a new AD, the change in coaches can always be justified, "new guy wants to choose his team". But our AD is new too, and the "give him some time to establish things" honeymoon protects SE as well.

Now, here is where the gale force winds pick up. The man that picked the AD is leaving soon from all reports. I don't think it could happen this next year, but if Perlman exits, this becomes possible:

    1. New Chancellor wants "his guy" in the AD position (we buy a top notch AD from the SEC or somewhere)

    2. New AD chooses (obtains funding to buy) a new top notch coach

    3. New top notch coach, per stipulations in his contract, hires (buys) recognized top notch assistants. (in contract: "You will hire coordinators that have been at top 10 teams and have these following characteristics -- 1. xxxx 2. xxxxx, etc) Leave ZERO room for bringing in buddies, unless those buddies are proven talents.

This scenario give legitimacy to replacing recent hires.

"Fixing" Nebraska football, at this point, can only be done with $$$$$$, and lots of it. The question is, can Nebraska football be fixed at all? If fixing means returning to the dominance we had in the 90s. Not sure it can, but if it can, MONEY will be the key.

I think most people are argeeing with this right now. Even the most optimistic people are begining to feel this way. I do believe there is no way out right now. I'm not sure money would fix the situation either. To much money is invested in other teams to suceed over us. Have you ever seen the numbers in the ESPN/SEC contract.

  3. Well I think people are over rating our offense as if we are great. Good yes but not great. Throw all the stats out you want, hype up tommie armstrong all you want. If you stare down your receivers, and you can't go through your progressions you can still be good at the college level but not great. You can get away with it some, but have we not noticed the untimely turnovers??? Tommie's shear talent over comes some of it which is why the offense is still good, but we will always be subject to turnovers like OT in Miami, unless that is fixed.

As for the defense. I'm not expecting any improvement from the defense. People just assume the defense will get better, they just disagree on how long it will take. I'm not convinced it will ever happen to be honest. I think the defense needs to find a pulse first before we start thinking about expectations. Right now I don't have any expectations for the team. I don't even expect bowl games anymore, in fact just the opposite, I think we will miss the bowl season from time to time. So why should our staff be ranked higher? It doesn't matter it you refuse to accept it or not. It is what it is.

  4. The problem is talent and scheme, but not in the secondary. It is art LB. We are and have been terrible at LB and that puts a lot of pressure on the DBs and DL.

Edit: not completely secondary is what I am saying

    THANK YOU!!

  5. NEWBY nuff said. I guarantee it otherwise I will wear a Notre Dame t shirt.

Last time I wore a Notre Dame shirt I almost got a ticket for parking in the handicap spot but then the officer saw the shirt and apologized.

  6. 1. Alex Lewis shouldn't be on the team, or at least on very thin ice and shouldn't be a team captain.

    2. Tommie Armstrong is not a good enough QB to get our team to a conference championship.

    3. We need to start winning close games, one loss in OT and one loss by a hail mary. Hope this doesn't become a habit.

    4. O Line can't block and makes to many mistakes false start wise.

Saw a lot of good things but not necessarily did I learn anything from them.

We need to play better and get better, I think we can do that. Reily isn't off to a good start but he has some time.
