I've never considered CU one of our rivals, but maybe that's just me.

Conf realignment killing natural rivalries aside, CU def was one of our rivals. I, for one, am sad we don't play more often.  Really from the late 80s until the 00's, colorado was consistently our biggest opponent in terms of division matchup, caliber of team and proximity.  The fan bases genuinely despised one another and they brought out the worst in us.  Its really era based, Big8 days was OU, big12 days was mainly colorado, bigten has been a forced iowa rivalrly that is starting to improve.

TL/DR: CU def one of our rivals, but not really anymore if we dont play ever

  2. 1.  Perhaps the university shouldnt have dragged its feet with this elongated search for president.  Trev had power, money and security; but with like many jobs- people can lose interest under bad leaders, temp leaders or absent leaders.  Perhaps trev's interest drifted due to the ongoing uncertainty on who his boss was going to be in and it opened the door for others to swoop in.

    2.  We 100% need to bring in a guy who prioritizes the health and strength of the football program.  I get the AD is the leader for all sports, but nebraska falls in the category that maybe 10 other programs do where its football or bust.  We cannot afford to lose matt rhule and take a step back on what is being built.

    3. Serious look needs to be done at the regents/higher ups.  You just lost a relatively young AD who was doing great things who happened to be a literal nebraska guy.  To have him just leave without a trace of suspicion is a bad look on leadership.  Sounds like they didn't even have runway to try and see what it would take for trev to stay.

That's assuming that the new Offensive coaches for Colorado run a similar offense to last year.  Didn't CU lose both their OC and DC in the off season?

probably a bit of a change and potentially a bit of a drop off.  That being said, they have a lot of talent at the skill positions and much of their downfall last year was their inept defense that we simply couldnt take advantage of given we were more inept offensively.

Shadeur Sanders alone is a tough challenge for any one- as much as i cant stand his and the broader team's antics- the guy's ability to extend plays, his arm, and the speed around him represents a tough challenge for anyone.  they certainly wont suck on offense

The teams they play SUUUUUUCK on offense and the Husker D-line should shut down the running game of pretty much every team they face.

9-3 is on the LOW end IF they start off 7-0.

    7-0 start changes everything.

7-0/6-1 start is critical, that back 5 stretch will be fun but I dont wanna enter it at 4-3 needing to win a couple just for .500.

Colorado offense wont be bad in the opening stretch-  similar to last year they're prolly the 2nd best offense we're gonna face .

I've started listening to mostly AM590 now.  1620 is not what it was...

I've pretty much switched to podcasts.  Mostly the 24/7 crew and occasional Husker online podcast.  I used to listen to pick6 but their audio quality coupled with just their overall boring tone and monotonous style turned me off.

Cant wait for spring ball to pick up in a month so we have some actual content to run with!  luckily the mens team actually has a pulse for once and perhaps a march madness run to fill the gap!

Unless they cancel some games, we probably have a Power 5 non-conference game scheduled for about as long as Rhule will be here already.

    But....

what a shocker, a mediocre personality in the local sports media coming out with a horrendous take.  I think Josh spent his monday watching jj reddick go scorched earth for clicks and said "im gonna do the same tomorrow, dammit"

Big ten and other conferences were already at a disadvantage against the SEC in playing more conf games and not loading up on cupcakes to the same level SEC did.  Unless the playoffs expands to 32 (which I do not want, just so we're clear) it makes zero sense to play a major program early when others do not.  Now, if the conferences wanted to some kind of SEC-Bigten challenge where every team has to play a school from the other conf then I can get behind that.  But to selectively sign up for a battle early on when you're going to have 4-6, maybe even more battles in conf play with the super conferences is just dumb

  7. the stars r aligning for us boys and girls.

Michigan will surely take a step down, at least a minor dip.  Washington could take a major dip.  There's a power vacuum occurring in the big ten.  Hopefully a new Rhuler stands up and takes what's his.

Well now that Nebraska has a new qb coach one would have to think that Holgorsen isn't coming now just to be a analyst here.  No benefit to him doing that.

I assumed he'd be coming here as a part of the coaching staff but this doesn't rule him out from an analyst roll.  Gary patterson seems to have found a home on sarks staff in an analyst type position.  No recruiting expectations, can focus on gameplan/practice execution.  Not bad to get paid pretty good money to do that and be part of a progrum again without having the time commitment an official coaching/staff member would demand

No one knows who they have/haven't talked to.  Its all just rumors/leaks and minor league "reporters" looking for clout, like the guy saying Lanning was in Tuscaloosa (never happened).  Jimmy Sexton basically represents all of the candidates (and Saban too!) and is doing his best to get every single one of them a raise, which makes his pockets a little heavier.

Anyways, if its DeBoer, that will be a totally fish out of water hire.  Don't get me wrong, dude can coach football like a madman (and would kill it at many, many places), but he has never been exposed to something like coaching at Alabama (especially following Saban).

Outside of urban meyer I dont think any candidate has the experience that would meet what you outlined and urban isnt even a candidate

LOL....Lanning was literally on the plane headed there the same day Saban announced he's retiring.  I'm pretty sure they knew who they wanted and probably already had reached out to him to gauge interest.

I think this has already been debunked right?  Quite a few confirmations yesterday dan lanning was seen in Eugene at a movie theatre with his wife lol.... college football hysteria at its finest... remember when we all thought the Sweater was gonna be our coach in 2014?  good times good times

Alabama is in for a down era I think. SEC will have more competition, and without Saban the Tide just don't strike the fear in opponents. LSU, Ole Miss, Texas and Oklahoma will look to fill the void left by Saban.

If I'm a bama fan Im not feeling great right now.  Still an attractive job but even top candidates have to be a little wary of following in the footsteps of the greatest the sport has ever scene... Literally nearly impossible expectations are waiting for them.

The slide at bama already started.  NIL+Transfer portal + the impossible task saban had of having a revolving door of assistant coaches being poached and going elsewhere.  Its a testament to his legacy as to how he was able to sustain that success at that level for so long.  All that said, the bama of the past couple of years did not look to be the same bama both on paper and the eye test that we saw steam roll CFB in the 2010's.

It might take until year 5 for Alabama to totally crash, if Frank Solich is any indication.

And of course the fans of the other SEC schools would keep questioning why Alabama's Frank Solich equivalent got fired, and would even make the really embarrassing move of electing that coach to the CFB Hall of Fame about 20 years later.

I'm sure if the transfer portal existed back in the 90s/2000s, franks 5 year slide wouldve occured at a much more rapid clip

    1994  Nebraska wins NC

1995   Nebraska wins the NC over Florida

    1996  Florida wins the NC

1997  Nebraska wins the NC over Tenn

    1998   Tenn wins the NC

1997 Mich and Nebraska tie for NC

    2023  Michigan wins NC

2024  Nebraska will win the NC  -   Easy Peezy  - it is in the bag.  :koolaid2::restore2

Ok Rhule and company - Get'r done.   No pressure to fulfill the destiny of the universe.  :D

(Oh, forgot the mention - The Universe doesn't care about what is fair.  )

Bout time I read a post with a little optimism.  Next year might be too big of a jump, but there's a god damn power vacuum occurring in the Big Ten... Ryan Day is slowly running tOSU into the ground, Harbaughs inevitable departure back to the NFL will bring Michigan back down to earth.  There's a sleeping giant lurking in the BigTen heartlands that is about to ascend to the top...... Perhaps a new Rhuler on the horizon

I know one thing...I'd sure like them to play like a Blue Blood again....

Last time Michigan  won the Natty, we split with them. wow have we had different paths since...

Eh, not that different.  Michigan should be a great reminder that you just need the right coaches and a little luck with the players and you can turn things around.

Lets not forget it was just a few short years ago that Jim harbaugh restructured his contract to more of a "prove it on the field" contract given the doubts that he couldnt beat tOSU and win the big games.  He tweaked his offensive philosophy and now has guys in an OC and DC capacity that will most likely either be his backfill or go on to be a HC elsewhere.

Michigan was also wondering in the wilderness with the rich rod, brady hoke experiment and finally got their guy.  Perhaps our guy is finally here and we just need to keep building

30 years- blue bloods do it for  a century in college football minimum, Minnesota was just as dominant for a similar stretch, Yale was many times more dominant, legendary, etc...  Nebraska has to be resurgent for us to actually be called a blue blood. We have to come back from this trough we are in and win a natty or we are definitely not a blue blood. Just sayin

you say this as if 100 years ago the whole nation was following the sport and watching/listening to the title game.

No one really gave a s#!t about college sports as a viewable thing to follow until the 60s.

if we win the title again the narrative isn’t going to be reentry to the blue blood club, it’ll be the resurgence of a sleeping giant

  20. hot damn, this thread is still going?  I guess I'll add on to it.

To me a Blue Blood entails the following:

    -Extended run of dominance/contention

    -Titles across multiple runs/decades/iterations

    -Legendary players

    -Legendary Coaches

    -Loyal/consistent fanbase

-A place where if all things came together, you can absolutely win and win big.

Where do we register on this?

-Extended Run? Already covered in this thread.  Even though the last 7 years have been the lowest of the program, the run from 70-2014 very few programs can match.  None of them matched in terms of wins in that time period.

    -Titles across multiple decades: Check

Legendary Players?: Heismans, AA's, we literally have college football position group awards named after Nebraska players

Legendary Coaches: Tom Osborne is considered one of the greatest to ever do it- and this is widely acknowledged across CFB, not just husker nation.  You can make the argument he'd be on the mt. rushmore of CFB coaches

Loyal Fanbase: What other progrum would have the intensity/following after 7 years of humiliation?

Can you win?: You most certainly can win at Nebraska.  While the past 2 coaches have been subpar- we really haven't been that far off.  We just haven't put together a team that has both the offense and defense humming at the same time.  If taylor martinez was 1 year older we might've won it all in 09 given the defense and Suh.

I can easily poke holes in other progrums qualification as Blue blood....

Texas is considered one- yet we have more titles and have seen greater highs more consistently than they ever have.  If it wasnt for the heroics of vince young, they'd still be leaning on their titles from 50-70 years ago.

Miami- No fan base, but absolutely a place with history, famous teams, coaches and the right coach can win there.

Michigan- Theyre the logo, great players, fan base etc.  If it wasnt for their bs split title in 97 you'd have to go all the way back to the 40's and pre WW2 to find them at the top (depending on how tonight goes)

This thread is dumb, I'm dumb for continuing it.  Go DAWGS tonight but more importantly our march back to the top begins the SECOND this game ends tonight.  2024 is here boys and girls, lets buckle up cause we backkkkkkk

  21. 3 minutes ago, Mavric said:

And we were also pretty bad.

So the only way that the schedule will be harder for us is if our opponents are getting better faster than we're getting better.  That is a possibility, but one that we will all be severely disappointed in.  Even if we just all get better at the same rate, the schedule won't be any harder.

So the only way it will be harder is if our opponents get better and we don't.  There doesn't seem to be any rational reason for taking that position.

I do think our schedule next year is a bit more challenging.

tOSU= michigan this year.  Perhaps they can be viewed as a step down from michigan with mccord departure and some of their skill guys going to the league.  That being said, until I see ryan day completely run tOSU into the ground I'm going to assume they will remain a top 5-10 team.  Despite their lackluster year this year- USC/UCLA seem to be a more formidable opponent compared to Maryland and Michigan st we had this year. Iowa/WISCy are obvi a wash

You bring up a great point in the bolded tho. One can easily make the argument that no big ten increased their odds of getting better faster than we have w/ Raiola and some key transfers/guys coming back.  Curious what our LB depth chart will look like but the line/secondary should be improved based off assumed growth and progession of our younger guys coupled with vets we have coming back.

The downside as an on the field coach is Holgorsen really hates recruiting.

It would be an enormous shot in the arm for this offense though, as this staff desperately needs to completely restructure this passing game. Whatever role he takes, it'll be a big influence because the Air Raid brings a structured approach that, imo, Satterfield has always lacked.

Some may be wondering how the Air Raid matches with Rhule's stated offensive philosophy, and to that I'll say to look at Michigan. A lot of their passing game is based on Air Raid concepts. You don't need 4 tiny wide receivers to utilize this approach it just started that way because the Air Raid, like most offensive systems, was designed to solve roster limitations at a school that didn't recruit the way the bigger schools did.

Whatever role he ultimately takes, it will help solve the biggest problem this offense had last year: rhythm and timing. Our passing concepts had no sense of timing in their progressions and the QBs often held the ball, way, way longer than you can realistically expect to block. That's literally the problem the Air Raid was designed to solve.

How much recruiting is he going to have to realistically do if he’s just the QB coach?  Incoming 5 star- perhaps he didn’t like recruiting as a head coach but that demand diminishes greatly if you’re just a sole position coach

  23. 18 hours ago, Red Five said:

I have no info, but wondering if this is as an analyst while he collects his buyout.

Dana doesn’t seem to be the type of grinder that Rhule looks for in his assistants.

I’m just curious- what are you basing this off of? Age? Lol

My guess is he’s coming in as QB coach/possibly assistant OC and Satt  owns OC and maybe TE’s.

as far as grinder goes, don’t think the demands for a sole qb coach are that high recruiting wise when you have an incoming 5 star.
