Ohio St, sure. Why are the rest of these teams so scary? Not saying NU will win them all if in any, but...

    USC 7-5 and no Williams

    UCLA 6-6 new QB

Wisconsin 7-5 (NU took to OT on road)

Iowa 10-3 (dubious record and a terrible pick away from NU beating them 2 straight)

USC on the road is gonna be tough.  Even without williams, riley's track record suggests he'll have a qb humming, who knows what they look like defensively.

Im not saying we cant win most of those games.  It's just a much tougher slate compared this past year when it was a crap msu and maryland heading into wiscy/iowa.  I hear ya on the wiscy and iowa call outs that being said, one of those progrums we havebnt beaten since 2012 and the other weve only beaten once since 2014.  I need to see some W's consistently against those before i dont consider it a tough game

Yes, and the easiest schedule in modern Nebraska Football history is behind them. Fortunately 2024 provides them with another chance to win games, but beyond that the schedule gets much more difficult. Nebraska isn't always going to have a schedule full of teams on multi-game losing streaks to play each week.

Its so critical we run the table the first 7 weeks or start 6-1 at worse next year.  That last 5 game stretch of ohio state, ucla, usc, wisconsin, iowa is scary AF yet gonna be awesome

I think the big difference with Raiola as a star QB and those guys though is how he might help land other skill players on offense.

I expect some major WR recruits taking a look at us for the 2025 cycle if we sign DR.  Recruits that most likely would not consider us as of a week ago

Marlon Lucky was a disappointment to a certain degree. He played and was productive. But he was never the difference maker he was billed to be. Wasn’t Baker Steinkuler (SP?) a five star?  He was ok but again never a difference maker.

I think many assumed he was going to be reggie bush for us, which, is really unrealistic standards lol.  He did redefine what a back could look at like at nebraska with being a threat in both the run and passing game.  I think we all had heisman expectations and view him as a disappointment relative to that when in reality, he was a pretty filthy back and would be by far the best back we've had since Ameer if he was on this squad now.

I woke up this morning and started to think that bc of what transpired this year with the qb's play on the field this is exactly what needed to happen bc if Jeff Sims did come here and succeed I don't think that Nebraska would have been in the position they are in to gain his commitment.  Raiola has a clear path to play early and my belief is that he feels he is ready to start bc of his ability and bc he was able to pick up 4 different offenses in high school.  Yes their will be a learning curve once he hits college but other then Tommie Frazier and Suh coming here this is the biggest recruiting win we have had for a decade.  Can't wait to see him play bc he is being compared to Patrick Mahomes and that's says a lot.

This would be the biggest recruiting win in Husker history.  #1 ranked QB and top overall recruit depending on the service you look at.

Suh became a beast here but as a recruit, he didnt have the hype like this.

Marlon lucky probably most applicable in the 00's.

You might be right on Sims.  Couldn't we still had this outcome and not turn the ball over a bajillion times tho? surely a middle ground could have been had :)

Here is one concern I have in all of this:  We are in our current situation (bad QB play) primarily because FHCSF had 'his' QB picked before he got here and had him pegged as the starter from day one.  As a result, we had a 4 year starter and the QB room was never developed beyond # 1.  Perhaps we already see some of that developing now - even before DR has signed with DK looking at MSU.   This is the downside of picking the 'can't miss' recruit.  With NIL, that can't miss recruit could also become ex-can't miss if he transfers to greener pastures in 2-3 years.  That is the Debbie downer side of this.

The ideal is to bring in that good 4-5 star QB who has one year left to play next year while preparing both DK and DR to compete in year 2.  I think that is what Rhule is trying to do.  But if both DR and that 5 star 1 year QB both insist on being the starter for next year - then we are back in the same situation as you have to go wt DR for the long term potential at that point and hope his adjustment to college ball is quick.

I hear ya and agree with 99% of it.  To be fair tho, DR and 2AM are completely different QBs.  DR is the caliber of qb a program gets maybe once every 10-20 years unless you're ohio state.

I also think we've seen enough from Rhule and co to trust they wouldn't just give an 18 year old kid the job for sure for 4 years.

My biggest concern is we got our hopes up and raiola doesnt come here.  After the mccord news it would be the most nebraska offseason ever to be jacked up at the news that hit within 24 hours only for us to get none of them

Probably some lingering OSU picks that they never bothered to change when he flipped to Georgia.

I think some of the recruiting services lock in the pick and dont allow them to change.  That was brought up on I think the husker corner podcast last week when Callahan and sipple had that guy from on3 on.

When the season ended with four losses and a thud, I was ready to leave Husker football behind for a bit. Call it a cooling off period until I could get the juices flowing again. And I wasn't going to care about recruiting. And blah, blah, blah. And now, well, here I am waiting for some grand announcement. Sure is funny how we do this to ourselves. But here we go again. Got to love fandom.

And I worry we won't get the light boxes with all of the 12 man personnel stuff (and even some 22 man) that Satterfield seems to want to do.

Michigan is considered by our fan base as a "power team." They run tons and tons of 11 man with one tight end. So does Ohio State. Both teams are always threatening you with the passing game despite having the ability to ram it downfield with power running.

But it isn't just because their QB's are better than almost everybody else's in the conference. It's the scheme also, as you mention.

Rhule and Satt from day 1 have said they want to be power run but also throw it down field.  I actually hope we get stacked boxes because it opens them up to get torn up in the passing game and one of our strengths in the next few years should be our TEs in fidone and nelson).

Ideally we're running 11/12 and their team has no idea if we're running or passing (unless its an obvi pass or run down).  Box count is overrated and the previous poster saying its the most important/OL play is overrated is laughable.  specially in today's game of football where often a team comes out in a formation, checks the opponent, looks at the sideline and then audibles/adjust.  Letting box count dictate success and how we play screams football from 20 years ago.

Against the head coach whose defenses were predicated on 2 high safeties.

That's why I'm not responding to the rest of your comment. That idea is pretty foundational to understanding the post.

Box count had nothing to do with us getting roasted by the play by play guy against michigan for pointing out how our OL chronically had their hips pointed sideways and ceding leverage because of our own crap play which basically allowed michigan DL to waltz right into our backfield play, after play, after play.  Said problem wont be fixed by having the world's best QB- if equally talented or more talented teams break down the pocket and are in the backfield more often than not, than the concept of box count doesn't even matter because they can get the pressure they need by rushing 4 and brining in a blitzer or 2.

As I said, box count is important.  But more foundational than that is the play of your line.  If you think understanding box count can hide s#!t o line play, well, then i see no point in reading your comments either.

Also, in the bold.  Nice try throwing some sass my way- u actually did respond to the rest of my comment given my wiscy example and you countered that first lol.  Toodles!

And maybe people are taking it as a sign that the NCAA is resigned to not enforcing sit-out years/waivers in the future, in which case it is a lot easier to clean house. But for now, it's just that players who are currently sitting out a year can start playing.

You can only make players leave your first year as a coach. But this would still make it a lot easier to process players in subsequent years - right now you can tell them "you're not going to play here" but they might still stick around and hope for an opportunity rather than sit out. If coaches tell them they aren't playing here but they could be immediately eligible somewhere else, they're more likely to take the hint and bail. Something has to happen with our roster for sure though.

There is so much murkiness with the rules, or lack of rules today.  For instance, Rhule can still use that provision i mentioned, a guy wouldnt be on the team but he'd retain his scholarship as promised to continue his education.  However, I believe if a players enter the portal he basically gives up his scholly/gives the progrum a chance to rescind.

  13. 4 minutes ago, Husker in WI said:

See that's what I thought, but it's not based on when you enter the portal. It's just for the next 2 weeks (potentially longer depending on what the judge says then) players are eligible - and there aren't many games in the next 2 weeks.

I need to read more on what this means.  I'm still trying to figure out if Rhule has the ability to move players off scholly in his first year. In doing some research and other boards, I'm 95% sure rhule basically has through the end of this school year (May 2024) to reduce roster down to 85 via that "first year coach" provision.  There's some confusion if the first year means 12 months after hire date, or if is the first full school year (calendar).

If we truly do land Raiola and mccord, something tells me we'll be in the running for a few other guys who would be welcome additions to the team.  Somepoint we gotta get down to 85....

It sure would be nice if the NCAA can just say the players from the covid year still in college do not count against the 85.  The whole free year of eligibility and not doing anything about actual roster limits is creating some unnecessary headaches.

I'm going to say something very controversial.

    OL is overrated.

I'd only say that to this fanbase. It's not because it is a position group that is overrated, it is that I think some Nebraska fans honestly think bad offensive line play causes cancer.

The biggest component of the running game is box count and the biggest contributor to sacks is the QB. Not that the offensive line doesn't matter, they absolutely play their part and I'm poking fun at fans more than diminishing their contribution, but it is amazing how much better they seem to get with a good QB and a light box.

I wouldn't call your comment controversial, I'd say its completely off base and based off nothing lol.

Box count, QB presence/decisions and line play all impact one another.

that being said, to say OL is overrated is an insult to football in general and to what Nebraska has been and what it is trying to become.  You can look at many reasons as to why we've turned to utter crap the past 20 years- the biggest culprit, in my opinion, is the clear decline in o line talent and play.  We've had one too many years the past decade of not placing a single guy in the draft or even come close to draft consideration on the OL.  We've had seasons where not one, but multiple of our starters, rank towards the bottom or dead last in graded out line play.  This is inexcusable.

We can get mccord and all these qbs/transfers all we want, but until the days of our LT getting absolutely embarassed by the michigans of the world are over, we will never be a consistent player for a playoff spot.  I don't know how you can say the biggest component of the running game is box count- we as husker fans literally pump our chests whenever we can bragging about the glory days and how we used to tell opponents where we were going and they still couldnt stop it.  Up until Fickell was brought in, we knew damn well wiscy was running it and we still give up a ncaa record, in 3 quarters.  Sure, box count plays a role- I'd much rather run against 6-7 guys in the box vs 9-10.  But OL play remains either 2nd or 3rd biggest area for consistent success (ranking qb 1 and qb rush/DL as 2/3).

The excitement around Frost coming home to coach was bigger than this. That seemed like a slam dunk hire to all of college football, and Nebraska was guaranteed to return to respectability.

This seems much more ethereal. Even if we get Raiola, McCord, Kaelin, Etienne and Fleming, which is a monumental task, it still feels like we'll find a way to mess up and miss a bowl game.

I would sincerely hope McCord alone would be the difference between a 5/6 win squad and an 8-9 win squad.  If we simply had a qb that was 75% of the caliber McCord is this last year we'd have most likely finished the year 9-3/10-2 and the male population of the husker fan base would be walking around with perpetual hard ons.

Why cant we all be friends?  In defense of Georgia, i've had a blast in athens on gameday a couple times.  Great fans and great experience.  All fanbases/pockets in the country have the small % that spew irrational thoughts.  Lets rise above it as we swoop their 5* :)

I was thinking this morning (probably because I have a son in high school) about how the next few days may be for DR. I can't imagine it being very pleasant being at a high school in GA currently, and potentially decommitting from UGA. If he does commit to Nebraska, I would imagine that the family gets him out of there, ASAP.

I think he'll be just fine.  Given Dylan's history of switching schools annually, I'd be shocked if he doesn't sign, enroll early and is on campus in Feb for spring practice.

I'd like to at least see a public de-commit from Georgia before I got too excited. 5 mins from now we could learn Georgia repaired the situation and it was all a big misunderstanding.

A lot of insiders, whether that's from Nebraska, Georgia, or national are predicting this flip but no one is saying why this is suddenly happening. Lots of theories, but nothing concrete. That's a big red flag for me.

He's not gonna announce he's de-committing until hes locked in somewhere else. This isnt like the summer when he still had 8 months to make a decision.

What I would expect with a recruit like Raiola coming to a dumpster fire program like ours is one main thing (and then an obvious second one in the new era of NIL):

    1. The big draw is having the potential to play much earlier than you would somewhere else.

    2. You somehow get a bigger paycheck than any other competing offers.

#2 is very plausible. But #1 is more of a head scratcher if McCord is coming in.

I think what likely happened is there is uncertainty if Raiola would be playing next year at Georgia.  If all is equal and he has more of a connection/feels like home here, it becomes a much easier choice to play for nebraska.  I'm sure rhule has been upfront saying McCord would be slotted in #1 on depth chart but not a for sure thing and Dylan would have a chance to win the job.

As far as money is concerned, something tells me Georgia has no problem matching/out do what we can offer.  Its not like Dylan is potentially leaving a Big12/Pac12 school.

Perhaps the easiest answer is the Raiola family has lived in georgia for a bit now and maybe they've found out the lifestyle/scene just isnt for him.
