Doesn't Nebraska always win the off-season with all the buzz that surrounds the program???  That's when (the off-season) I get excited with all the changes to the roster it keeps me on the edge of my seat.

I dont get this point thats going around.  If anything, the offseason just seems more optimistic because of how trash we've been on the field.  But to say we've won the offseason, perhaps compared to big ten west peers.  Cant think of an offseason where we actually gained national buzz and attention tho

You felt this much of a buzz about Nebraska football? God it sucked missing a bowl in the biggest tease of a way.. but there’s something brewing, I can feel it.

I know nothing is official yet but I’ll relish in it for what it is. It’s been a dry 12 or so years (more really).. feels good to get some water.

While the frosty era went up in flames, the excitement was at this level.  I could argue even a bit more than the vibes right now because it was an official sure thing and he brought a swagger/bravado with him (that clearly wasn't backed up with his execution and on field results.) Beyond that def Suh... perhaps I'd add the first 5 weeks of T Magic in 2010 when he was running through and past everybody

    Exactly.

We wouldn't expect a prodigy student-actor at UNL to star in a blockbuster movie for free. Or a singer to record an album unpaid. Or anything else just because they're associated with the University. That actor deserves whatever a studio thinks their talent is worth, the singer whatever the record label thinks they're worth. And athletes what TV executives think they are worth.

Couldn't agree more and the analogy you provided is similar to mine.  My buddy went to a school with an excellent music program (well known Jazz program and he played Bass) and was paid to travel by the University for shows and events on the road.  His course load was lite, room and board covered by University and was receiving checks every 2 weeks based off how many performances, time travel, etc.  Double standards abound in the NCAA

Now, back to the more pressing topic.  Is Satt getting canned after 1 year?!?!

That is absolutely not the case. There are 15 guys in the portal already better than what we have. Maybe more.

Seeing how Sims ranks as possibly the worst throwing in CFB history (averaging an INT every 8 throws) and HH was towards the bottom of FBS in every category, i'd venture the whole transfer portal might be btter than what we have lol

Dude can coach for sure.  There were al the allegations and rumors, but staying on Fox as a commentator and still broadcasting makes me wonder.  Seems like if they were that egregious, he wouldn't still be broadcasting.  But maybe a reason he isn't coaching.

Interested in how Iowa does vs Michigan tonite.  See if Michigan can hold them as well as we did.

I think we get Rhule with no drama or allegations to follow.  In time I think he will right the ship.

I have full confidence Rhule Will right the ship.

was partially joking just to reignite this thread. That being said, i don’t think urban’s done. I think he waiting for one more go. Off field stuff aside, he still first in line behind Saban for greatness this generation, Kirby smart chasing him as is dabo given his age.

I’ll be shocked if Iowa keeps this within 24

  6. If we sold our soul for urban we’d not only be in this game instead of Iowa but we’d be about 3.5 hours from upsetting Michigan.

why? Cause urban cannot be tamed

disclaimer: unless it’s an nfl team or a coed in a Ohio restaurant owned by urban

I think the more accurate statement is, we need to find a QB and WRs that are way better at running it.

I am 100% down for this, cant we just throw $$ to fix it?  We are the only school with access to deep pockets and NIL money, at least that's what I've been told by many posters on here

There are literally 1000's of posts from Husker fans being done with Pelini, the big game blowouts, 4 losses, feeling apathy, calling it a s#!tshow and wanting to move on.  Maybe some enjoyed beating Idaho State and crappy Baylor, but people mostly got tired of the ugly losses when it was supposed to be a competitive game, or a possible win.  If only winning matters, maybe the Huskers can move to the Mountain West or become Independent.  I just think you have forgotten how it felt to be throttled on TV and that a change was needed after 7 years of the same thing happening.

    Lost to Wisconsin 59-24
    Lost to UCLA 41-21
    Lost to Minnesota 34-24
    Lost to Mich State 41-28
    Lost to Iowa 38-17
    Lost to Ohio State 63-28
    Lost to Wisconsin 70-31
    Lost to Georgia 45-31
    Lost to Wisconsin 48-17
    Lost to Michigan 45-17
    Lost to South Carolina 30-13

I just wanna say thank you to Samaje Perine one more time for breaking melvin gordon's record set against us a mere week after being embarrassed by wiscy on national tv.

I honestly don't think you're paying attention to the games you claim to be watching. We've tried to run RB screens, I think one hit for a big gain earlier in the season, then I'm pretty sure Chubba had to ground a ball against Iowa when they sniffed it out. The WR screen you claimed to hate was picking up 4 yards sometimes against Iowa, other times it was minimal to no gain. Same thing happens in the zone running game. Are just supposed to abandon zone runs?

If you're going to whole sale scrap plays that "don't work" we might as well start punting on second down.

I'm not a fan of Sat's overall play calling as games go on, but he also has had d!(k to work with from specialists position standpoint. Kemp was the only viable WR threat and he was injured throughout the heard, and he's 5 foot nothing.

I'm prolly being a bit dramatic but man, i just had one too many helpings of bullock either not laying a hand on someone or just getting completely blown up on his block and the play is over.  Probably a bit hungover on the play too from the frosty era where it seemed like we were just too horizontal focused in our passing game and inevitably drives stalled out once we near the red zone/goalline when the field is shorter and those horizontal plays dont have as much effectiveness.

I guess i went overboard saying to completely scrap it but still feel like there were instances against iowa and wiscy where we come out and run that WR screen and we're at 2& 12 and punting 60 seconds later.

Youre right, given all the injuries there really wasnt much for us to rely on with confidence.  I'm just tired of us seeming to be the only progrum who cannot run that play with consistent success when it seems like table-stakes for every other team we face.

To add one thing- im not a fan of satt's play calling as the game goes either but also acknowledge he didnt have much to work with.  That being said, a lot of the s#!t our offense was failing at late in the season we were also failing at to the start the year with our first string.  I just want a competent offense again and a year where both the defense and offense is ON and firing on all cylinders.  Its literally been since 2001 and first part of 2010 before TMart and his toe since we could make that claim?

I'm glad you're not an OC...

Screens aren't just ran as a stand alone play, and more often then not that outside WR screen is an RPO. It's a constraint type play to help keep the defense honest, like almost every screen play is designed to be.

Not sure if you caught it, but later in games we take the same concept fake the screen and have one of the WRs run a go route.

Well we can agree on one thing, I'm glad I'm not an OC either because that role has been the most despised position for 20 of the past 22 years here.

I'm well aware of the concept of running basic plays to shift the defense horizontally and use the whole field to setup success for that play or later in the game. Believe me, playing nickel CB and hybrid safety through hs and d2 i took my fair share of blindside blocks and hits on the LOS that still hurt to this day on a cold winter day.  In my post after I acknowledged the value of it and how others can run it to success, but for whatever reason- its not a play that is ran successfully here. More often than not its been a call on 1st and 2nd down that repeatedly puts us in 2nd and 3rd and long to down.  Which isn't surprising, for the past 5 years we've largely tried to run with WRs who aren't physically imposing whatsoever and will never be great open field blockers.

I even mentioned there are better ways to do screens that seem to be more advantageous to our roster.  We're trying this WR screen in the flats with QBs who dont have the best accuracy or touch and WRs that cant block- y arent we seeing more RB based screens where our TEs/pulling lineman can be the ones blocking.

I think in my post (im too lazy to find it) that by oct 1 if my team has utterly failed to execute it then I want it scrapped from the playbook.

I get what you're saying, i really do, but at somepoint this offense needs to stop beating its head against the wall calling plays "that everyone runs to success"- if that was the case than any average OC would have success here.  Create a damn gameplan and pivot in games to plays that cater to your strengths.  Sure the fake screen to a streaking WR might work here and there, but its not worth it if the cost is a no gain or 2-3 yard loss the majority of the time (which we def fall into).  There are other ways to keep a defense honest and setup plays that don't require a disaster of a play call that ruins a drive more often than not

Sims is done. He knew that mid season.

HH knows he’s not a QB long term, but he stepped up amazingly on a very difficult situation and tried. Now….you're a tight end.

Purdy….You're a QB.  We want you to stay and compete. We are going to bring at least one more in to possibly be the starter. He’s going to be someone with a lot of hype and probably experience. If you beat him out, you’re the guy. If not, we would love to have you as the back up.

if he transfers, we need to find a late transfer in and he can compete with Kaelin for the backup.

Couldn't agree more with your breakdown here.  You would think Rhule would be able to tell Chubba, just look at this program the past 13 years... there may have been a handful of years, if that, where one qb played every single game (assuming a transfer comes in and wins the job).

Im actually not too fearful of chubba transferring- he's kind of at the point now where its time to s#!t or get off the pot.  If he takes another step in the offseason and wins the job, great.  If he doesnt, I'm not sure what kind of market there is for him from other P5 teams when he's already transferred once and isn't necessarily that young.

One would think that 26 years should be sufficient to pay the price for that 97 championship. It's time to get back on top!

Perhaps its the turning point, 27 years prior to the flea kicker we won our first title and went on a 27 year run that really had never been seen in the sport and still hasnt...

27 years post fleakicker is NEXT YEAR BABY, heres to another 27 year run of greatness :cheers

I have to think that this holds him here possibly longer than just next year.  Let's say he has a very good defense again.  This amount is going to keep some smaller school from coming and getting him as HC.  If someone is going to take him as a DC, it's going to have to be a major player in P5.  AND....if they try, we can still raise it more.

Now, if a pretty good program comes and offers HC, then he probably would jump and everyone would understand.  Hope that happens eventually.

This is an excellent problem for us to have as it would mean our defense takes another step forward next year

+1. That offense will score a lot of points but your defense will see a lot of plays due to the explosiveness. And TOP. Late in the year you are going to have a lot of depth issues. Especially in the B1G.

FYI this is the post I was referencing. Wasn’t sure if I could straight up post that or not.

Going to be very interesting next year to see if USC will need to change a bit to the style in the bigten or if the bigten gonna need to change to factor in USC.  Outside of ohio state and michigan, every other big ten member today is gonna struggle mightily to play the TOP and field position game against an offense that regularly puts up 40+.  Sure, some winter games late season will slow USC down but if I was a betting man, something tells me they're going to transition to bigten play just fine.  tOSU ran this league for 10 years straight mainly due to having way more talent + world class coaching... jury out on riley given this past year but they are going to have some skill players at their disposal (along with oregon and washington) that would destroy the schedule we just played this year

If you had the number one defense in the country and your offense was a turd sandwich and you still lost games do you not have the same shine as the number 5 defense with a complimentary offense? Also getting guys at Nebraska who weren't as highly ranked as the guys at USC to play better defense gives him plenty of shine.

Sorry, for whatever reason I cannot select multiple quotes from different pages in this thread like before... I assumed this post of yours was painting nebraska as the number 1 defense with a turd sandwich for an offense.

I sincerely hope he doesn't go to usc, but if it happens, i cant necessarily fault the guy. Heavy socal/southwest ties, fertile af recruiting ground with really no peers in LA, national title contention potential is significantly higher there.  He turned this dumpster fire of a defense around quickly, coaches like that are typically very confident they can do the same at a place like USC with easier access to better players and also that Big10 money

A lot more smoke coming out of this. Not looking good. Man that would suck!

Someone should rename this thread to USC lol... yah it would f'n suck- silver lining, in the long run this is a good sign you have quality coaches in your progrum.  I can't recall many big names coming after frosty/riley/bo while they were here.  I guess tuioti going to oregon probably the biggest one?

s#!tty yet good problem to have if you're rhule

Hate to break it to ya man, he didn’t have the number 1 defense here last year. And also hate to break it you, if money is in the same realm he’d be foolish not to go to usc.

as far as attention goes- it’s easy for you to say he’s getting all he needs here. Let’s be real- usc provides a platform that is easily tenfold the exposure he currently gets here at lincoln

I agree. Nebraska currently doesn’t have the deep pockets other universities have and our recent success doesn’t help. There will be 6-8 realistic programs that can continually compete for a national title while the remaining 60 P5 programs rotate for a playoff birth or individual seasonal success. It’s basically the Major League Baseball model where the major cities (LA, New York, Boston, Houston, SF) have continued success and the other 20 something teams have 1 or 2 year runs as they can’t afford to sign key free agents.

How is this any worse than today when its more like 3 programs competing for a national title while the remaining 77 P5 teams are geared towards conf title/individual seasonal success?  CFB has always been about a handful of teams, if that, competing for the title each year-- NIL doesnt change this.  hopefully the 12 team playoff does shake things up, a bit

  19. I don't believe in curses, I believe we made this s#!tty bed that we have to sleep in every night.

HOWEVER, if there was an event that started the curse, it isnt Solich firing.  Its the god damn flea kicker catch between frosty and davidson against missouri in 97.  While we won the title that year, that play zapped every single source of good luck/good will out of progrum for good in order to make that happen and keep the 97 season alive.  Its the only way to explain the title that never was in 99 and the decline from elite that we witnessed beginning in the last month of 2001.

Everyone knows curses abide by Newton's 3rd law of physics.  A curse this vicious couldve only been born by something magnificent and extraordinary- that fateful evening in columbia in 97 cursed us all to this day
