  1. I'll remember Taylor as a flawed quarterback

I'll remember him as a fumble machine,

I'll remember him for having about as much elite speed as he had injuries.

I'll remember him for gutting out those injuries,

    I'll remember his blazing speed

I'll remember the vitriol and hatred heaped on him.

I'll remember him (hopefully, oddly) as the quarterback who played with deeply flawed defenses,

I'll remember him as a guy walking out the door with umpteen-dozen all-time records,

  2. Sorry if I helped move the original TMart thread off-topic.

There is another conspiracy theory going around that Bo played TMart against Minnesota so that he wouldn't qualify for a medical redshirt. It's far fetched, but plausible.

    That's ridiculous.

Is it more ridiculous than playing an obviously very-hurt quarterback every snap of a winnable game that you're losing despite having not one but two very capable quarterbacks sitting on the bench?

Both situations are ridiculous, but I don't find it plausible that Pelini would intentionally sabotage any hope for a medical hardship. This staff has made questionable personnel decisions in the past that seem silly to the rest of us, and Beck's playcalling has produced many headscratching moments. It's not difficult to see the Minnesota game as another set of blunders in this area. It's very hard to imagine suddenly sabotaging the career of the very guy that Pelini stubbornly hitched his wagon to three years ago for better or for worse.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Pelini in large part build his reputation on bringing the blitz at the right time? I seem to remember a lot of good blitzing in 2003 (or maybe it was just Demorrio shedding blocks). During LSU's NC run in 2007, I remember the TV announcers continually referring to "Pelini dialing up another blitz," and we heard a lot of that in 2008 as well when Pelini came on board (particularly the well-timed blitzes from DBs to clinch the Gator Bowl).

Even though blitzing turned out to be unnecessary in 2009, and the speed/talent didn't seem to be there the past couple years, now that this D is starting to put it together a little bit, we are seeing a lot more blitzing, which Pelini has always been a master of when the personnel is trustworthy. It's been a hell of a lot of fun to watch the past couple weeks.

  4. This day in age we would just get labeled as meanies and insensitive towards the other teams feelings. Too bad fear and intimidation don't factor anymore, lets emasculate football to make sure nobody gets ..hurt...

I would certainly hope we can be tough and intimidating without resorting to douchebaggery.

  6. 'TO BULL'

If you can't see that there are several Dolphins involved by now then you're not paying attention. Last time I checked Incognito didn't try to murder any teenagers by running them down with his car like LP did. Is he a scumbag, probably and I'm not debating that. But so are several others involved is my guess. If you think the voicemail was truly a death threat you're slower than I thought. And if you don't think Nebraska's name is being drug through the mud just listen to who we're being compared to in terms of "locker room culture" or look at all comments under the articles. Like this gem for example.

"Martin went to Stanford, he is a highly evolved human being. Incognito went to Nebraska, he is an animal. See how simple?"

Are you really listening? Or just hearing what you want. LP didn't hurt anyone but himself and that poor girl.

This conversation isn't really about Lawrence Phillips, but I think you are missing a few pages of his rap sheet. He's hurt a lot of people and is a dangerous criminal psychopath.

  7. Here is a piece written by a friend of mine who I used to work with conducting workplace investigations, comparing the Incognito/Martin situation to bullying in other workplaces:

    http://austinworkpla...d-nfl-bullying/

Bullying is a complete waste of an employer’s payroll and leave budgets but it is, in fact, a norm in many workplace environments. Investigators will need to quantify and compare the culture of bullying to the exchanges between Martin and Incognito. If, for example, it is normal to leave epitaph-laden voicemails for other players, investigators will need to consider whether Mr. Martin was particularly sensitive to the culture or if this is truly a targeted agression. Maybe Mr. Incognito was reasonable to believe that it was acceptable to leave epithath-laden voicemails because it happened so often without consequence throughout the Dolphins and the NFL.

  8. I can't remember the writers name from the Miami paper (used to work for ESPN), but he made some interesting comments this morning at around 7:45 this morning on Mike and Mike.

When talking about Jonathan Martin, he referred to it as a Stanford/Harvard locker room.

When talking about Incognito, he referred to NFL locker rooms as being "a Nebraska style locker room"

Even though Incognito played at Nebraska, I don't really enjoy being lumped in on the thug side of NFL locker rooms. Just because Suh and Incognito came from Nebraska, that shouldn't quite put us in Miami U status.

I heard that guy on the radio this morning too and thought he sounded like a clown. I'm glad the interview seemed to get cut short. It seemed like this guy was trying to excuse the situation just because Martin and Incognito are both "a different kind of guy" without putting any real thought or analysis into it, and then he calls refers to a thuggish, lowbrow culture as a "Nebraska locker room." GTFO.

  9.

Different people respond differently to different situations. We wouldn't be hearing anything about this had Martin "toughened up." We also wouldn't be hearing anything about this if Richie didn't go too overboard in Martin's opinion.

I don't know how anyone can say that Richie didn't go overboard. Perhaps this sort of behavior is common or acceptable in NFL locker rooms, but it shouldn't be. You're not going to stop a$sholes from being as$holes or people from hazing each other to some extent, but even going by the voicemail, assuming it wasn't a joke and happened more than once (and Richie has an extended history of asshattery), this stuff is totally unacceptable. If it is somewhat common or accepted, that needs to change.

As far as Martin toughening up, it sure looks like the guy has mental health issues. Most people are able to handle some extent of bullying, and we all deal with jerks on a day to day basis everywhere we go, dealing with that is part of life. Richie's bullying (and we certainly don't know the full story) should not be excused, but Martin was not able to handle it the way some others might have. But that is not a matter of being tough, it is a matter of making sure a person is mentally and emotionally healthy. Trying to force a mentally unbalanced person to "toughen up" is sort of like asking a paraplegic to run a little faster.

Every time there is a mass shooting, we as a society briefly have a dialogue about addressing mental health in this country, but it extends to other areas as well, such as NFL locker rooms, the poor and addicted who are in all of our communities. Martin needed more help. Either someone should have seen the signs and found help for him, or he should have done more to make sure his own issues were known and addressed. A therapist should have been provided to help Martin cope. Instead, if the rumors coming out today are true, the Dolphins assigned a raging douchebag in Richie Incognito to address Martin's issues, which is wholly inappropriate and dangerous.

  10. Meh. I love Pink Floyd, one of the best bands ever. But I don't picture this song resonating with the team or the fans in the stadium (especially the student section) in a "pump up" sort of fashion. I don't know what would do the trick, as I don't really know what the kids listen to these days, and most of what I've heard is crap, but something that is catchy and upbeat that can get the students jumping around would probably work better.

The team could come out of the tunnel with black cloaks and swords if they wanted to, but it wouldn't be intimidating, it would just be pretentious. Some gimmicks just try too hard.

I don't know if there's an equivalent to Enter Sandman of Jump Around that would not be cliche, but we do know that a better product on the field always gets the stadium rocking, and better sound and production quality out of the existing gimmicks would help as well.

  11. As parents, you will all undoubtedly agree that one of our most important jobs is to educate our children as Husker fans. As babies, my wife and I taught our children basic sign language, such as "hungry," "more," "please," "thank you," "touchdown," and "throw the bones." They know how important it is to wear red on Saturdays, and when we visit my wife's relatives in Missouri, they know that they are supposed to act superior to them.

So I was very pleased this morning when my 4 year old son asked me who the Huskers were playing against this weekend. Yes! He's interested in the game! So I tell him that the Huskers are playing at Michigan, and it's a pretty big game. Then he asks what Michigan's team is called.

My blood suddenly runs cold. Although he is showing a gradual interest in Husker football, his number one passion, as with most 4 year olds, is superheroes. So I gulp, and tell him that Michigan is called the Wolverines. His face lights up with excitement and asks if they wear yellow and blue like Wolverine the superhero. Crap.

At the end of the discussion, in which I tried to persuade him that these Wolverines have nothing to do with the superhero, and that we are Huskers, he said he wanted them to tie. He's too young to understand college football's overtime rules, so I let that one slide. At the end he said he hopes they both win, but even if they lose, he said, "It's okay, I will want them to win next week."

At least he embodies the motto of: "Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory."

But seriously, I need to burn all of his superhero toys now and replace them with Husker memorabilia, right?

  12.

    1990 through 2012

    1.Boise State --------- 169 - 46 - 0 win % 78605

    2.Florida --------------- 228- 65 - 1 win % 77721

    3.Ohio State ---------- 211 - 62 - 3 win % 76993

    4.Florida State ------- 213 - 67 - 1 win % 75979

    5.Nebraska ----------- 221 - 72 - 1 win % 75340

    6.Miami Florida ------ 204 - 77 - 0 win % 72598

    7.Texas --------------- 206 - 79 - 2 win % 72125

    8.Virgina Tech ------- 205 - 83 - 1 win % 71107

    9.Oklahoma ---------- 203 - 83 - 3 win % 70761

    10.Michigan ---------- 200 - 82 - 3 win % 70702

OK, now you can make whatever argument you want with the above details... carry on!

If my mathematizing is correct, even if you remove the 60-3 record between '93 and '97, Nebraska is still sitting at a 70% win percentage for all other games during this time period, which still puts us close to this group. Not too shabby overall.

  13. People are really off their rocker if they think Bo will be gone after the season. And to suggest that he wouldn't get a D1 job either is just plain dumb. There have been a lot of worse coaches that have gotten jobs at other schools after being fired from another.

A week ago, Bo's ouster was a foregone conclusion. Is a tipped Hail Mary the only difference between calling for his head and being off their rocker for thinking so? There's still a lot of football left to be played.

  14. Isn't this sort of honor typically reserved for someone a little more inspiring or who transcends the game of football?

Nebraska has a statue honoring Brook Berringer, who was an exemplary teammate and humanitarian, known for his citizenship and charitable service, whose life was tragically cut short. Michigan honors a guy who didn't even complete his college eligibility and makes a living as a blowhard.

  15. Possibly unpopular opinion:

I just really don't like Greg Sharpe's commentary. It's good, but not great and doesn't do much for me personally. I want a play-by-play guy that would absolutely lose his mind when your team completes a hail mary as time expires to win the game and possibly save the season. Imagine Gus Johnson calling that game, whether you like him or not, he would have just lost it with excitement and I think it's the commentator's job to make you feel what's happening before making you hear what's happening.

Jim Rose would lose his $h!t on even the smallest bit of excitement, and as a result, his play by play was unintelligible. I like the fact that you can understand what is actually going on when Sharpe calls the game.
