  1. I learned that our offense is erratic even against a team like Southern Miss and I don't have any idea what Beck will call or what Martinez will do with it. It looks like our defense is young but starting to gel and understand how the pressure and coverage work together. The run defense was obviously much better but who knows what that means at this point? It looks like we have a lot of talent but I'm not sure if we'll know how to use it against the big boys. Next week is HUGE!

  2. Yes, 'yards per play' is the crucial stat and should always be surrounded by banners and lots of flashy graphics because it means you're giving up an average of yards divided by the number of plays.....very critical!! For instance, if you give up 80 yards on the first play, then your number of yards per play is 80 and that's very bad. Now if you give up 80 yards on 5 different plays but only 2 yards on the other 50 plays then that's....just a second while I get my shoes off.....500 yards and they scored 30 points (was playing a very poor kicking team that missed all the kicks) and that's 9.09 yards per play. Okay, then the next game you give up 6 yards in 100 plays and they score 470 points and you gave up 6 yards per play.....that's not as bad. :sarcasm

  3. Reading everyone's reaction has been interesting to say the least. My question to you all is this. What if every game is like Wyoming? We have a back and forth contest, give up ~600 yards and squeek out a win. This means we go undefeated, but in possibly the ugliest way possible. How would you react?

Edit: good lord you guys suck at reading. I realize that odds are we wouldn't win every game if we give up 600 yards. I realize there's a difference between Wyoming and Alabama. I also realize that good teams typically don't give up 600 yards ever. I asked a question about how would you react if everything played out the same in every game.

I guess you react by hanging in there and cheering for the team until the game ends. I'm not sure why people set incredibly high standards for the team and then spend the entire season complaining except maybe that's what they really like and not the team? It would take all the fun out of it for me if I cried the whole season.

  4. That is the conundrum, this defense does work (at least gets wins) against teams with immobile quarterbacks. But it also has failed spectacularly against good mobile quarterbacks and with teams that actually have the ability to game plan against it.

Defense is easy with LSU talent or with a guy named Suh on your team. However, it requires some thought and planning when that is not the case. We don't seem to be showing any willingness to adjust or get more aggressive with teams who have figured out how to exploit our scheme. Why didn't we blitz? How can we expect to maintain coverage for ten freakin seconds every down?

I think the D linemen we have could've gotten after Smith, especially with some blitz help, but their assignment was obviously to try to keep him in the pocket and wait to see if our DB's could play out of their minds. 600+ yards three times now. It will happen more if something doesn't change.

When you don't creatively blitz it wears on your D-linemen as well who must get frustrated fighting the entire game with lousy results. It appears that either we held back so as not to show our hand to the big teams or the coach feels we're not ready to do anything fancy without causing a bunch of coverage busts.

  5. I find it hard to understand the adaption to college level speed. We are supposed to have a top ten offense, that has very fast running backs, top WR's, and one of the best running QB's in the nation. A supposed best Oline in years. How does a defense playing against that level of a team in practice not know college speed. How can they look so overwhelmed. Lost. Most of these kids have been playing football since they were very little, most have played at top level programs, that are prep schools for college. Well coached players. How do they turn into kids that seem to have forgotten the basics of the game when they arrive here.

Our problem is partially talent, but coaching/scheme on the defensive side is the main problem.

We read all summer long how great these young kids were going to be, how improved they were by subtraction. The kool aid flowed, and a lot bought into it.

Now we have played three straight games, giving up 600 yards in each one of them. Had we played a top ten team last night, what would have happened?

I do not want Bo fired, but I want improvement on the defensive coaching side. This has become a trend, a way of life, and most of us that have been around a long time do not understand how it is happening. We have one of the highest paid coaches in the country, and that is for a reason. We want to win, and spare little expense in doing it. Nebraska fan is not getting what they are paying for, Wyoming fan got what they paid for in spades. See, Wisconsin and Georgia.

Time to quit blaming the kids, take some time at other programs that have figured todays offenses out and stopped them. Get help, because it is needed. I have no idea what Southern Miss will bring offensively, but I virtually guarantee UCLA will put 600 plus on us if things remain the same. Not good anyway you look at it.

If UCLA does it, there is no reason not to expect Northwestern, Michigan to do it. The buck stops with Bo, he has made little to no improvement since Wisconsin that I can see. His defenses are worse than Cosgrove by a long ways.

We pressured the QB and he panicked most of the time.....then we laid back and he had his way with us. Linebackers, if there were any on the field, were non-existent. DB's were too far off the receivers most of the time, probably due to the ten minutes a play they had to cover. When our guys were in position, we dominated. Is Charlie McBride available?

  6. Terrell Newby looked like the best player on the team, not sure if that's a positive, but I'm serious about that.
Newby looked good, he just didn't look fast. At least not Ameer fast.

No, Newby is fast, faster than Ameer. He has track speed, plus has completely natural, great moves and some power. He's the real deal.

At no point did i see Newby running faster than Ameer. I did not say Newby wasn't fast. Maybe its just that Newby doesn't have that initial burst of speed that Ameer does when he gets the ball.

I see Newby as a dodger, Ameer as an all-around back who can run inside and out with power or finesse, and Cross as a Makovicka type crazy bull.

  7. No doubt about it, I give it to Imani Cross with Enunwa a close second. The main reason I give it to Cross is not only did he run like an angry bull, but he picked up the whole team and gave them confidence, like a shot of adrenaline. There was a noticeable difference in the team's attitude after he got through stomping the Cowboy defense. On defense I give the game ball to the punter Sam Foltz who did more to keep them away from the goal line than anyone on defense.

  8. I'm gonna jump in here again. It was 93 degrees and humid as hell. We played a bunch of young guys. The Wyoming coach was Pinkel's OC and probably knows us like the back of his hand. The Wyoming QB was better than the Missouri QB's we played. We won but should've won by more....the reason we didn't is because we let up on offense and 'called some bad calls/ didn't execute' at critical times. We were also getting new players onto the field while Pinkel's boy was still going full speed ahead, which made us look worse than we probably are. I think there's plenty of upside for this team.

  9. This is the thread to brag about Newby, not to detract from anyone else. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who didn't expect to see what we saw and are pretty excited about our talent at I-back. I remember when Osborne had the We-backs...now we have three great backs with unique styles who should be able to get the job done in any situation.

  10. Our secondary played too far off receivers, that can be fixed pretty easily with more experience and confidence. I thought from the talk that we had the kind of d-backfield we had with Gomes, Hagg, Dennard, and gang....maybe we do. They had some good breakups. Our D-line is young, it was really hot and humid, they seemed to give a lot of effort for the conditions and the limited stunting. I'm not impressed with what I saw from our D coaches, but there were times when the D was fired up and looked good. Are we missing linebackers......aren't there supposed to be some on the field tackling runners? Except for the one long run, Abdullah didn't look as good as I thought he would. On the other hand Cross and Newby looked great. I'd still like to see a game plan where the I-backs are used better....they get in the flow and are not pulled in and out for no apparent reason. I saw a comment that it's over without Martinez....I was thinking he still struggles to keep the offense flowing while the opposing QB looks like Peyton Manning. I think another QB might reduce the drama and get the ball into the hands of our many skilled players more consistently instead of every down seeming like a crap shoot.... Too bad we didn't get to see any of them. The O-line ,while kind of crappy at the beginning, played much more consistently than I remember seeing in a while and the pass protection was pretty good the entire game. They seemed to gel as the game progressed and did some fine run blocking in the second half. Enunwa had a great game...other receivers could've been used more. Cross is a monster and Newby don't run like no newbie. The kickers look mighty fine. The cheerleaders need to kick higher but their pompom shaking was very enthusiastic.

  11. Martinez and Kellogg III are seniors, Armstrong is a rFR who most likely will be the starter next year. Like y'all, I hope he gets some serious playing time when it matters so we'll know more than just speculation from a few glimpses of practice. I don't think we'll really know anything though until he starts against someone like Wisconsin or Ohio State. There's a lot to learn and remember in this offense.

  12. I think Abdullah is a much better runner than he's gotten credit for in the press. I see the first drive as ball control with Ameer doing most of the work. Who takes it in is just a matter of opportunity....could be TM, Ameer, or the fullback. Then again I could be completely wrong....I just don't see us trying to air it out in hot weather against Wyoming, it's not our style to pull trick plays, long bombs, or run up the score in a game like this.
