  1. It's news because Republicans aren't making it a political issue like the other side did during Katrina.

What a low point in American history when one side is blaming the death of people on the other side and claiming it is racism. This was said for one reason and that is to get their vote. Heck, there were even people who believed that Bush CAUSED hurricane Katrina.

Heck, there were even people who thought Bush blew up the levy so that black people would die.

I'm glad you acknowledge that the Republicans don't do that.

  2. I've got to admit, I don't understand the allure (no pun intended).

Fishing to me should include a boat, warm weather and a relaxing environment, not freezing my a$$ off.

Not trying to offend anyone who appreciates it, just my opinion.

I sort of agree. There just isn't a whole lot else to do outdoors in Nebraska in January-February.

That said, there's a lot worse things than hanging out in a shanty with friends and schnapps.

Sometimes you just gotta get out of the house.

  3.

My biggest concern is us. We tend to do poorly after big wins, and when the Blackshirts are first awarded. This is the first year Bo came out and publicly stated a goal like "we need to win out".

This is one of the reasons I'm not going to start packing my bags for Indy just yet. It seems that after a big win, we come out flat or trip on our newly-inflated ego as a team.

But, as stated, this is the first time where Bo made a stated, public goal. Perhaps Bo is using the public to hold his team accountable (to a small degree)?

I think maybe he just got caught up in the moment when he said it, but it does put his team in a position where they have to cash the check his mouth wrote. Whether it was intentional or not, I'm not sure.

Caught up in the moment or just telling the truth? Because they did and still do need to win out to win the conference. So why would that cause a stir in the team? I'm sure these players already deal with plenty of outside pressure just being a D1 football at a school like NU, so I doubt a little truth from Bo to the media will faze them.

You guys really read too much into things people say. What else was he going to say? At the time, we had lost a conference game. The best chance we had of getting into the CCG was to win out. A coaches job is to make his team concentrate on winning every game. That is their goal no matter what.

Why is what he said good bad or indifferent to the fans?

  4. Pass plays in that situation are a work of art if they work and the dumbest thing in the world if they don't.

Running up the guy 4 times is a work of art if they work and the dumbest thing in the world if they don't.

The fact is, the team needs to execute the plays and they work. As has been said, the receivers were open, one miss was on the QB and one was on the WR. They didn't execute.

  5. Very good post Knapp. I agree with pretty much all of it. I think we should be picked to win all of the rest of our games. (yes, I know MSU is a 1.5 point favorite but I don't believe they should be).

That doesn't mean we ARE going to win all of them. But, we should.

After living in Iowa for 15 years, I especially got a kick out of that part.

That said, Wisky in the CCG really concerns me. Our HS team just got beat in the playoffs by a team that they killed in the regular season. Anytime you play a team twice in a season it is dangerous.

Remember Washington in the bowl game? I know the motivation should be better in the CCG than in the bowl game but the issue still remains.

  6. Personally I could care less what our ranking is. We raise great, just win games, play right is all that is important. Not really excited about the Rose Bow, with the loss to Ohio State, to me we will not be the true champion no matter what.

If we win out, I guess we deserve to be there, better than someone else, but if Ohio State finished undefeated, we won nothing, it was given to us. Not a negative on the team, but a loss means as much as a win. I had hoped Penn State would beat Ohio State and we would beat Penn State, then I could justify the champion mode.

I know most do not think that way and it is fine. Just a different drummer I guess.

But we have a lot of work to do, before we even think about the Rose Bowl.

Just keep winning. That is needed for recruiting.

    Bs......

OSU is on probation for a reason. They broke the rules. A loss by them is by someone that played by different rules.

  7. Nut job is a term that can be used for both sides in that state as far as politics. if you think it's just on the GOP side, then you obviously haven't paid attention.

And, I'm not even necessarily talking about the campaigning from the candidates themselves. For the 2016 Presidential campaign, the candidates will start visiting Iowa next year. Yep...it never stops there. And, I never understood why Iowa and New Hampshire carry so much power.

I believe that should go around.

Here is my plan for Presidential campaigns after living in Iowa.

The order of primaries would be controlled by a Presidential election committee. This committee would hold a lottery similar to the NBA draft goes through. This lottery would be held 3.5 years before the election and the state that was first automatically is dropped to the last place in the next election. The other 49 states are put into a pool and the order is drawn out.

Now, The earliest a primary can be held is June 1st of the year of the election. All primaries are to be completed by August 1st. The candidates then have till the second Tuesday in November to campaign in the General election.

That makes this process from the first primary to the General election 4 months. It doesn't need to be any longer.

The power in the election is spread around and one state or region doesn't hold the power all the time.

The money that Iowa and New Hampshire now bring in from the media and candidates will get spread around.

Another idea I have toyed with is to have regional primaries and not state primaries. So, it still will be competed in 8 weeks but we have 8 regional primaries of states grouped together. One primary each week. That order would go through the same lottery system described earlier.

    Oh...and....caucuses need to be outlawed.

  8. That's funny.

I lived in Iowa for 15 years. As much as I am interested in American politics, I got really sick and tired of it when I lived there. If you have never lived in a state like Iowa that is targeted by politicians, you should try it sometimes. It will open your eyes to how these people work.

  9. Let me ask this. The fumbles on kick and punt returns have been lumped into this. Until this game, how many have we had fumbled this year?

Our special teams have for the most part not been very good this year. Maher's numbers are way down on field goal percentage. His punts are either really good or extremely pi$$ poor. Against Ohio State, our kickoff return was just horrible. Ameer would bring it out of the endzone to get to the 12 yardline. It's the little things like a tackle lining up in the backfield twice. It's Reed running into a pulling guard resulting in a blown up fourth down. We've seen what this offense can do when things mesh together in the fourth quarters against Wisconsin and Northwestern. Why can't we play like that for the entire game? Heck, I'd even take two or three quarters. By playing that way for two quarters, we beat UCLA. By playing like that possibly three quarters, we beat Ohio State. It's a lot of little things that add up to big things that's killing us right now. I just think back a few years ago how we had what 8 turnovers against Iowa State thinking then it was an aberration. Then we had the total cluster**ck against Texas which again thinking it was an aberration. Plain and simple, we make too many little mistakes right now which is keeping us from taking the next step. I don't know how to fix it, yet I'm pretty sure firing coaches is not the answer.

    That wasn't my question.

  10. I beg you to show me a war we got into because the military contractors convinced the politicians to go to war.

I am all for bringing our men and women home. I have been preaching for years that once we are out of the wars we are in, we need to close most of the over 700 military installations around the world and just worry about our little part of the world.

That is a decision for the politicians. Not the contractors. That's like someone going out and building a $500,000 house when they can only afford $100,000. Then, when they go bankrupt, you blame the home builder for selling them the house.

  11. Why is it that any time we beat a team with a mobile QB we "get lucky" and we won in spite of ourselves and then it is like the game never happened. In various threads on here, it has been listed the mobile QBs that we have beat in the last 4 years.

Now, I agree they burn us sometimes too.

But, to say we CAN'T stop a mobile QB is flat out not looking at the facts. Will we this time is the question.

  12. We need to get off oil anyway. I agree wholeheartedly about energy independence, and I've never liked the fact that Earth dumps trillions of dollars into a very unstable region of the world, just to perpetuate its addiction to oil. Electricity can be generated here, the cash stays here, the terrorist-sponsoring nations don't get our money, and it's better for the environment. Wins all around.

I'm guessing on this, but I think part of the reason we don't drill in our own backyard much is that we're saving the oil for when we really need it. What if there's another world war and we can't safely ship oil to the States from the Middle East? I think it's more of a war strategy than an economic strategy. We're discovering new oil reserves all the time in America, but they don't get a lot of press and we're not drilling in them, and I think it's for that very reason.

The biggest hurdle is fighting the big money in these old energy industries. If you look at some of the biggest donors its big oil and coal, pumping lots of money into the Republican sides of things, in efforts to create a less conducive environment to get the new/clean energies up off the ground. Like BRB mentioned with the $180,000 price tag, its so expensive because it is not mas produced enough to bring the costs down. If everyone in say California had solar panels on their roofs, with all the sun they get there the whole electric industry would go bankrupt. And the enormous amounts of money those companies will spend to try to keep that from happening.

I don't think there is much credence to the saving the drilling just in case. Its simply cheaper to drill where they are drilling, Be it from softer earth, less depth needed, or what have you.

That may be true in some places but it's not true in some areas like ANWAR and the outer continental shelf. ANWAR was the biggest joke of an issue. All we heard was about these beautiful green meadows full of caribou that will die if we drill there. It was total BS. ANWAR is a relatively small area that is pretty much marshy unusable land for anything. Technology now could go in and drill there and almost not disturb anything.

It was turned into a political issue so that some people could claim they are fighting big oil to save the environment.

  13. The bigger issue is if he can stick his foot in his mouth bad enough in England to offend or annoy the country, what will happen with much, much more thin skinned nations like the entire Middle East. Think about it, a Youtube video started riots in a dozen nations. "Walk softly, but carry a big stick" is easily the most sensible way to work with that region. You have not been paying attention if you think Obama has been playing nice and softball. The sheer headcount of terrorist leaders alone would speak to that.

Iran is a complex issue. Starting a war, or backing Israel in a war would quite probably result in something we (as in the people of the world) do not want to see. And the hawkish attitude Romney takes there is dangerous. Want to bet he would have a different view if his boys were enlisted men?

You seem to be forgetting all the saber rattling Romney has done all throughout the campaign season. Add the spending he wants to add to the military, war is on his mind. Hell war is good for business, I'm willing to bet he has money invested in a number of companies who would stand to profit handsomely from keeping the war machine in high gear.

I agree that walk softly but carry a big stick is the way to deal with that region. But, make no mistakes, using that stick may be inevitible when dealing with radical whack jobs, of which they have plenty.

I am not as jaded as you with regards to Romney's drivng forces. I do not think for one minute his sons not being military men would mean he is more apt to put American lives at risk. I also do not think he would treat war as a way to grow business or that he would value personal profits over what is best for our country. I'm pretty sure he has enough money that he doesn't need to use the office of POTUS as a way to make more. It is one thing to try maximize your profits as a businessman. Isn't that what most rational people try to do? But, you haven't paid close enough attention to the type of person he is if you think he is in this for personal gain. I would equate that thinking with some of the crazier conspiracy theories I have heard.

Ask yourself this. If the companies who are big defense contractors who supply the military with all the gear for war are giving to a candidate, what is their motive? War IS their business. A great many businessmen might meet you definition of 'rational' but many of those I would also not qualify as 'ethical' making money is the ONLY thing they are concerned with. If others have to die to stuff their pockets, so be it.

Yeah, movie quote, but don't think this is not how it happens.

I do not trust Romney. I do not trust his motivations. The only thing he has never changed stances on is the release of his tax info. I have a hard time believing he does anything that is not for money or personal 'glory' Selfless service is not in the make up of a life long investment banker.

I think anyone would be much more cautious about sending men and women into war if it was their own kid going. There is a reason there is a line "When the rich wage war, its the poor who die" Hell there was a way to buy your way out of the draft. Jaded? Perhaps. But I think that's just the way the world works, and has worked for a very, very long time. No longer are the nation leaders leading armies on the battle field.

I think the part I bolded is a completely unfair assessment of military contractors. I will guarantee you that what would make these people the happiest is if the military buys their products and then doesn't have to use them to kill anyone.

In fact, a HUGE amount of this money is spent on PROTECTING our troops and making sure they don't die. AND, we have spent literally billions of dollars on technology to only kill the few people we actually need to kill. Our military and it's contractors work tirelessly to prevent unnecessary loss of life and our military contractors are a big part of making that happen.
