  1. If some like it or not but Iowa IS our rival now. It is the most natural one we have on many different levels.  Rivalries don’t always have to do with H2H.  Some say Wisconsin but they do NOT see us as a rival by a big margin.  Minnesota is their natural rival anyway.  Their whole worlds revolve around one another.

Iowa’s natural rival is of course Iowa State but not in the same conference. That is where we come in. The rest of the country think Nebraska/Iowa is natural.

Missouri has faced the same issue in the SEC. Their rival is Kansas but not in the same conference. Much like Iowa, Arkansas was placed upon them to be their rival. As time has gone by, it has become more natural. I guess their next closes rival would be A&M?

Will be interesting to see how Corcoran develops and at what pace also.  Obvious sleeper of the bunch being a frosh.

I think they try to take it slow with Corcoran. Pretty similar career path as Benhart. Red-shirt but play him in at least 4 games behind Jamies. Someone like Bando can be the back-up the rest of the games.

Need to get Corcoran some experience so he is ready to go the following year when Jamies is in the NFL.

  3. Yes I can understand it’s a sensitive subject due to his health but probably a good move for both parties in the long run. Our ST and OLB units have not been where they should’ve been.

Is Dawson capable or do we bring a legit option?

  4. I’m just happy to see us blowing out Maryland, putting us in a position to have a lot of incentive to beat Iowa. I know there are many on this board that much rather just get this season over with but I think it would be huge for us to become bowl eligible. To have more practice time and for sure for the younger players.

  6. My mind keeps going back over to the thought we are a year and a half into a rebuild and we have people already thinking about getting rid of Frost.

Again this is a rebuild and we have so many who have zero patience for that rebuild. Once most got through the fluff and kool-aid, we have seen our glaring holes. Some of those holes are at positions that can’t be fixed easily very quickly, namely offensive line.

I think by year 4 things should be coming together much better. We would be talking all Frost recruits and recruits developed under just this staff. It may be year 5 or 6 when we become really good though.

You go back and see such coaches like Bill Snyder and Barry Alvarez where it basically took until year 4 before they really took off program wise.

Sure those two inherited horrible programs but I think if you go back and look at the end of Riley’s regime, things were actually becoming very bad. So no Frost may not of taken over program that had been in despair as long as those two but it wasn’t a good situation at all.

Well said and I agree. At this point I would place the priority on next year as we cannot win the West this year. We need to build for year 3. By next year there will be no excuses left for Frost as he will have had ample time to install his system and will likely have over 75% of his guys playing.

Honestly year 3 is probably asking for too much as well. The offensive line probably won’t be where it should for another couple of years. Until guys like Benhart, Corcoran, Piper and Jurgens are somewhat experienced and further developed, we won’t be that good upfront. You have to hope some of those sophomores further develop as well. Maybe they aren’t that good right now but by the time they are seniors they will be very experienced and further developed. Heck maybe guys like Lynn and Conn may prove to be darn good as well in time? At worst we actually have a little more quality depth.

  8. I love the go freshman now mentality. Maybe some of them haven’t been ready, if that is physically or mentally (playbook/assignments)?  By this point in the season, they should be in much better shape than when they first got here.

Not to mention these freshman who have yet to play have to be restless and have fire in their belly’s. They are probably eager to show what they can do.  I’m sure Coach Frost is hoping these guys are the spark to turn the season around and kick start the future. But they still get to keep their red-shirt.

  9. I’m staying definitely patient with Frost. If he can’t do it, no one will at Nebraska. Probably won’t have the team we want until at least year 4 or even 5. This roster was a complete dumpster fire when it got it. It was probably worse than he imagined. I know it was worse than I thought.

Let’s be honest Frost has not been perfect and he has had to learn some lessons the hard way but thankfully it seems the administration has a lot of patience, even if some of our fan base has none.

  10. Heck I didn’t even realize the team as a whole was that young.

It isn’t just that we are young but having that little upperclassmen explains our overall quality depth. We are having to depend on a lot of underclassmen.

I don't know. It's been said that they are trying to fix mistakes by giving the kids film cut-ups to watch instead of repping the mistakes out in practice if/when they aren't getting it.

IMHO, it seems as though we're trying to do too much, with too many different looks and it's hard for the kids to keep up with it all. We show several formations one game with various motions, and haven't seen it since. Why?

There's no way we're getting strong, cohesive reps building true muscle memory if we're trying to run 25 different formations and 20 different concepts.

    lol you do both!

What I’m trying to say is stopping to correct every single mistake during practice time doesn’t have to happen during practice time anymore.

You can correct the obvious quickly but the film room is where you can get in-depth on fixing the mistake and they get to see the mistake. By doing it in the film room, it ALLOWS for them to go over every play over and over again at a much higher volume. Then next practice the kid is suppose to know what he did wrong before. If he or another player makes the same mistake, you can just quickly restate what was just gone over in the meeting room. You can run the same play over again in a short period of time.

It is how pretty much everyone does it at the varying college levels and many high schools that have the resources and time.

Now I’m admittedly old school in my coaching philosophy, but in my opinion, that is a load of crap. You fix mistakes by physically doing things the correct way. Not by watching it being done wrong and then talking about it.

We’d be much better off practicing doing things the correct way as opposed to getting in tons of reps the incorrect way.

Nope, in the old days when you practiced more hours that made sense but nobody practices as long anymore. You correct what you see quickly but you can’t spend all day wasting reps. That is what film time is for.

I have coached both high school and college ball, times change. So don’t give me the that is a load of crap line. This isn’t 1985 anymore!

What is the difference if the mistakes are being shown immediately on the field and in film room? It is being corrected regardless.  You can still physically demonstrate errors in the film room if need be and the kid can visually see what he did wrong.

  13. Well I think our overall talent would show better on offense if we just purely had better offensive line play. It is amazing how things look when you have pass protection and big holes in the running game.

Same goes for the defensive line on the other side of the ball. You get pressure on the quarterback and you stop the run, everyone looks good.

Back in the 90’s we were so dominate because we were better than everyone else upfront on both sides of the ball. Pretty simple in thought but not easy to obtain.

  14. Not sure how good Bando really is but at this point he probably should be playing over Hixson who is struggling mightily physically from the looks of it. I agree Jurgens probably showed the best of the bunch. If he can just snap at a high level, he is a good blocker. He has the potential to be a very good player.

It is what it is with this line. I’m in the belief it is still two years from being a good one.

Based on what? Faith? I'm good with that but I want to know where you're coming from

We are have been brining in some real dogs along the offensive line in the 2019/2020 recruiting classes. The more Benhart, Piper, Corcoran, etc we bring in the better. Further develop Jurgens who has some real potential and some of the other young pups

The defensive line needs to get much better as well. If we don’t develop and get better along both sides of the ball in the trenches, we won’t improve much record wise going forth.  Frost is trying but it will take time. Again I’m patient but I know many aren’t.

let me start by saying I LIKE FROST. i want him to win here, and i think he will. but in my opinion, i think the issues with this team boil down to one thing: just being intentional about exactly what it is you want to see as a coach. that's what separates good/great coaches from the rest. i'm not sure we are being intentional about the simple things, and its showing.

    - correction in practice. if practice is as high tempo as it supposedly is, how much time do they actually spend teaching and correcting? i'm pretty sure someone said last year that they actively do not spend time correcting, but rather, they focus on reps, and address corrections in the film room. maybe we need to adjust that a bit.

    - player management. i don't think it's right for anyone to say they have no talent on this team. there is talent. but inexplicably, you only have wandale, spielman, and martinez, with a regressing washington and a limited mills. i find it hard to believe that those are the only guys we've been able to get ready, in spite of injuries. it's not right that you can't play other guys until someone gets hurt. that's just not going to work. there's no way in heck that guys will be ready when their number is called.

    - coaches keep talking about waiting for playmakers to make play. that just doesn't sound right to me. i submit that if you are "waiting" for these playmakers, then that means you are not actively preparing them mentally and physically to perform when the lights are brightest. that needs to change. i know players play, coaches coach, but ultimately, there is something to be said for making sure players are ready to be fundamentally football players. these players haven't looked ready to play in any game this season, except maybe south alabama.

    - coaching leadership. every week this season, the head coach has mentioned one player, and in most cases, mentioned a specific point of emphasis, and then another coach has come out and said something opposite, or the things the head coach mentions just shown up on gameday. the staff can be as close knit and familial as they want, but ultimately, i still contend that they aren't all on the same page. something is going on that we won't hear about. i can cite examples, but my post is too long already.

    - being too cute, outhinking yourself, making adjustments in game. nothing more needs to be said. sometimes you have to move away from part of your gameplan in game or in season, really. you have to be humble enough to do so sometimes.

    - you can't always coach effort, but you definitely don't have to allow poor effort either. this head coach said last year that there was no difference between "you can't" and "you won't". well, time to field only players who are willing. at least, that means we will have one of those two.

That is what film time is for, to correct the mistakes and be able to show the player(s) then without wasting practice time. If you spent practice time correcting every little mistake done, you would never get any reps in or very limited. Not every mistake is seen during practice either. That is why they are filmed from different angles in the first place. Coaches break down the practice film after practice and make the cut-ups accordingly. The coaches are 100% doing it the right way.

Everyone complains about our line play but what exactly is the problem with them? Run blocking was much easier (especially when we ran the option) as opposed to pass blocking...Most of our guys are young but supposedly are pushing the weights much better..So...What gives? Line blocking schemes?

Oh trust me I’d much rather us go back to our old option scheme in a heart beat. I think it is a offense much more suited for the B1G.

Sometimes it just takes time for the line to gel and come together. We don’t even have a senior on the two deep. Not to mention some of those lineman are being red-shirted. So they aren’t even in the mix yet like Benhart. Even when Corcoran comes in next season, he likely needs a red-shirt year imo. So again next season should be better but it may even be two seasons from now that we see a much more dominating offensive line.

This might be true if this were the 1st or 2nd game in 2018...unfortunately this is year 2 and our stats against common competition are worse overall.  Against Colorado, Illinois, Ohio State, Northwestern and Minnesota here are some key metrics to show regression this year relative to 2018.

    • We are 2-3 against these 5 teams year over year, but the 3 losses in 2018 were by 5 points in less.  In 2019 two of our losses have been by 27 points and 41 points.
    • The average points Nebraska scored in 2018 against these 5 teams was 39.4.  The average in 2019 is 20.0.
    • The average points allowed year over year is roughly the same (33.2 to 32.8) so no real improvement in that regard
    • The average total yards Nebraska had in 2018 against these 5 teams was 552.4.  The average in 2019 is 398.4.  We have 154 fewer yards per game against the same competition in 2019 than we did in 2018, and this is a full year into Frost's system with more of his players and schemes that have been employed.

Overall the data shows regression in many categories, with the offense showing the most regression while the defense is about the same as 2018 from these key metrics.  I didn't even bother looking at special teams as we all know that has gone downhill.

I don't think most Husker fans expected to win the West in Year 2 of Frost, but we certainly expected to see a positive trajectory...not a trajectory showing the team is getting worse.

Even if the offensive line was crappy last season, it was more experienced than this years bunch. Again once the offensive line develops with Frost’s guys, things will get better.

Until the offensive line gets more big talent in and the youngsters who are  freshman/sophomores further develop, I’ll be very patient. I think we will see a drastic difference once the offensive line is dominate again. Still might be two years away to be honest when many of those kids are upperclassmen.

Still will always be in the camp that believes we need to go back under center and to our old Osborne offense. Get back our physical identity.

Frost is going no where for a long time imo.
