I get it Trev needs to hire the right guy and make the home run but you can’t tell me that some fans and boosters have their ears on the ground and don’t have enough pull to throw an uproar for Micky saying because he’s black is why Trev went with a different coach

I don't doubt that such a claim would be raised. I'd be very much more willing to hear it out if say Mickey was undefeated since taking over. He has definitely brought some good things, there's been improvement. I just don't feel very wow'd. He got two close wins against two mediocre teams.

To be sure, there's only so much he can do with the team as is, and I consider that as well in my evaluation. I think he if he had pulled off the win over Purdue, I'd be much more inclined to say keep him. It sucks but we've been bad for so long, this season has to be treated as a trial run for him.

Look, he has five more opportunities to show something, assuming a hire is not made in the meantime. All of these are big boy games too I'd say. He wins three of them, I'd say, yeah, I'd keep him.

  2. Saw another mention of PJ Fleck. Look, I don't give a crap if he's annoying if he can win.

Been listing to 93.7 the ticket and just about every talking head is saying if it Trev don’t hire Micky he shouldn’t be AD. Lots of callers are saying they will give up being a season ticket holder if Micky isn’t named head man

There's a lot of idiots in this fanbase. Look, I appreciate what Mickey has done, but he hasn't wowed me.

I honestly don't understand "postgame win expectancy" is.  Post game.......you can be pretty sure who is going to win.

It's a lot like Corsi if you follow hockey, it basically looks at various analytical considerations and says "the stats suggest this team would win this percent of the time if you played the game all over again and they put up similar stats."

Basically, Nebraska had a better game analytically but lost due to other factors. I reckon we have a lot of games like this the past few years.

In fairness, Casey T is not our problem. He’s played winning fb in my view.  Not perfect but better than prior QBs at NU in a long long time.

The line play is our primary problem.  Those guys just have to find a lot more to their overall game to enable this team to win games.  With a good line, I’m convinced this coaching staff could win the west division, esp if they got to coach in Dublin.

An awakening of epic scale is needed in the O line.   I’d let the backups play if after 2 series it remains obvious they can’t win the LOS.

100000% correct. Casey Thompson is if anything an asset. Not saying he's one of the best QBs in cfb, but you give him a line, he's going to do a lot more than what you're seeing.

Facts. He changed cultures at every stop and Wake Forest is doing good things. There have been far worse candidates mentioned on this board for sure.

Culture change is honestly our biggest need. Right now, we have a program that is simply a losing program, and there's no way that isn't in the minds of the players. That's just reality, you can have talent and skill but when you lose a bunch, it doesn't matter, you will feel extra weight on your shoulders. Obviously nowhere close to the same situation but when I played in hs (I was talentless, let's get that out of the way) we missed playoffs for the first time in over a decade my senior year and I can tell you it just clings to you when you're losing, it puts you in a mental rut.

There's clearly talented players at Nebraska (Palmer, Grant, Thompson, etc.) They are giving their all. But until someone comes in and actually brings that winning mentality, you can only do so much.

Hopefully Leipold and Campbell are crossed off the list. Kansas was mightily overrated and they looked bad against a terrible Oklahoma team, giving up 701 yards of offense. Oklahoma could have scored 70 if not for their three turnovers. Campbell is 0-4 in conference play and is terrible in close games, so that should disqualify him too.

I am losing interest on Campbell. I'm not counting out Lance just yet though. That Kansas program was absolute dogcrap before he arrived. One bad defensive performance is not going to get me to say he's a bad coach. He still has them at 5-2 (that other loss being a very close one to a very good TCU team).

McElroy of ESPN says there is a small list of jobs Rhule would consider and none are currently open. He thinks Rhule will be on TV next year. So you might be spot on…

    Well...that's disappointing.

    Well...let's see, Aranda, Fickell, Stoops.

EDIT: Before anyone says Joseph, look, it's been nice and all but right now it's two wins over Indiana and Rutgers. Forgive me if that is not enough to say he's a top candidate yet.

  8. I've been all in on Rhule since I reviewed his college coaching career, and those quotes and facts only make it more clear to me. I would be dumbfounded if Trev isn't at least in contact with Rhule already. Not saying "HE BETTER BE COACH TODAY" just you know.

The point is he jumps ship after three years. why should Nebraska throw 8 mil at a coach that will leave after three years? hard pass on Rhule for me until he can show that he can stay at one place for 5+ years

The thing is now that it's way less likely he goes back to the NFL as they saw it didn't work out with him, also we have way more resources and selling points than Baylor or Temple. We're not Ohio State or Alabama, but we are much closer to them than Baylor.

Also, anyone worried about his NFL record at all: NFL record means *absolutely nothing* for college coaching. Unless you want to say Saban, Meyer, etc. are bad college coaches.

Before we forget, I think it's important to remind everyone that 2 of the most loved & respected coaches on this board were promoted to HC after being assistants with no head coaching experience. Who are those? Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer. In fact, many of the most successful coaches in our time were promoted assistants with no head coaching experience. Another good example (though I detest what he has done to his alma mater) is Barry Alverez.

So, before writing Mickey off please keep an open mindset and give Mickey a fair assessment. Everyone on the board said Frost was safe with 7 wins and a bowl appearance. (safe at least for 1 more season) Trev said it wasn't about wins and losses as much as it was about player development and progress. These things should be the measuring stick for Mickey as well. Lastly, I can't help but wonder how much Mickey will lean on his family for advice and guidance. That family bleeds together and Mickey I'm sure will take full advantage of their input.

Mickey is still in the running, certainly. Obviously if they win out (save a close loss to Michigan) I think you have to hire him. Same time, there might be names available soon, like Matt Rhule, and the longer you wait, the greater the risk you miss out on someone.

If you saw the husker locker room afterwards, the players are behind Mick. That celebration was great!

Happy for them and I hope it works out, but call me when Mickey has us win out save a reasonable loss to Michigan. Then I'd say yeah let's go all in.

  12. If it were up to me, I'd eliminate enough bowls so that you basically had to have at least 8 wins to go bowling. That said, Hilltop is correct, there's too much $$$$$.

Frankly, I look at bowls now as sort of a nice bonus for a winning season and something to use as recruiting marketing, but little more. More interested in division titles, conference titles, and, hopefully someday we can realistically talk about this, playoff spots yes.
