The probability of a recession has been getting lower lower.

The Democrats have made lots of mistakes, including Biden and Clinton being the best candidates they could come up with. But with a candidate like Trump, sometimes you have to put some blame on the idiot voters. I'm not sure how the Democrats reach the type of people who are willing to vote for a depraved piece of s#!t.

Idiot voters? You mean these folks don’t have a good faith interest in democracy, legislation, governance and compromise? trump_diapers.jpg

Reading about the experiences other Middle Eastern countries have had with Palestinians over the last few decades is pretty eye opening. Really underscores the double standard held against Israel.

The Telegraph: Biden considers accepting Palestinian refugees

I’m convinced there’s very little Joe could do to sway any Uncommitted Dem Pro Pal voters. Any decision he makes on this regardless if it aligns with their “cause” won’t be up to their standards. Even if he did something they wanted, it assuredly wouldn’t be good enough. It’d be met with “He should’ve done X! He didn’t do Y sooner! Z would’ve been a better choice!” They don’t seem to have much nuance and aren’t moved by compromise or incremental progress. Their fantastic ignorance is perfectly summed up by their efforts to lay a 2 millennial struggle at his feet.

“As of 2017, California campuses including Stanford University, UCLA, UC Berkeley and USC were among the top 10 recipients of Qatari money”

I’m sure this is just a total coincidence. I’m confident any day now UCLA students will begin protesting for their school to divest from Qatar, given their endearing concerns for human rights. Surely they wouldn’t want their university to take billions in donations from a country with unconscionable human rights violations.

I went to the UCLA campus last night and spent a few hours there before the police dispersed the encampment. I wanted to see the pro-Palestine student protests for myself and get a sense of the atmosphere, energy, and students, as well as the movement's focus and the desired endgame. I wore a t-shirt with a chant that I hoped to use as an engagement opportunity with some students to see their views on various issues and how they perceive peace as an opportunity for the Palestinian people and cause. The chant is slightly modified from the ubiquitously repeated “from the river to the sea…” Here is what I saw:

    - Right next to the parking lot and main entryway into the campus, a truck was parked with a speaker that loudly broadcast recordings from Richard Medhurst. I was disappointed and disturbed to see a rotating antisemitic symbol on top of the truck with a combined swastika and star of David. I wished that the protest organizers had removed that particular symbol, which was entirely hateful and vile. Many statements, words, and messages were plastered all over the truck, which had a Palestinian flag.

    My assessment:

    1. It was truly disappointing and upsetting that the main entrance had a van with incendiary language and inflammatory rhetoric, not to mention a clearly antisemitic and vile symbol equating the swastika with the star of David. The organizers did not challenge this van; many who passed it showed immense enthusiasm and approval for its presence. [see pics at bottom of this post - knapplc], voic

If your “movement” or “cause” ranges from casual indifference to full throated enthusiasm for such heinously hateful imagery and messaging, it’s pretty difficult to take anything after that terribly seriously. It’s difficult to believe that these “protestors” are “sincere” or “have their heart in the right place.”

No kidding!  Comedy is becoming MORE brash but also more specialized.  We didn't used to have options, now we do.

I don’t know if Netflix is still doing it, but for a year or two they had a new stand up comedy special coming out every week. To your point exactly, we have waaaay more options now, and we can watch a show whenever we want. The days of rushing home to watch the new episode of Friends are over, along with standing in line at a record store to get the new CD from an artist. Times change.

Edit: and to your point about comedy being more brash. Remember when The Simpsons or South Park was the edgiest thing on TV? It’s barely a blip on the radar now.

You just expected, there’ll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight. Well, guess what? Where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and PC crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people."

    https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/jerry-seinfeld-comments-extreme-left-pc-crap-response-rcna150008

Seinfeld co-creator Larry David has been doing just fine with Curb Your Enthusiasm for the last 20+ years. So what exactly is Jerry’s gripe? That people don’t watch 30 min network sitcoms anymore? I think that has far less to do with “the left” and waaaaay more to do with the countless streaming services and new original content that are available on demand now. People don’t consume media the same way they did in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. All in the Family, Cheers, etc were huge because they were the best of what was available at that time. If I have a choice between sitting down to watch Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, True Detective, The Sopranos or a new sitcom with George Lopez or Tim Allen recycling the same schtick from the last 40 years… it’s a no brainer.

    Insurrection Ken??

When will the taxation be Kenough?!

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/2024/04/29/president-biden-has-proposed-tax-increases-here-are-six-of-them/?sh=2cf92e04168c

Per this article “If your taxable income is $47,025 or less, you pay zero tax on your long-term capital gain.”

Couldn’t find exact numbers, but according do a Google search, about 58% of Americans make less than $50k/year.

“Biden’s FY 2025 budget proposal? For high income taxpayers, the long-term capital gains tax could nearly double to 39.6%. That proposed capital gains rate increase would apply to investors who make at least $1 million a year. In fact, it is possible to go even higher, as high as 44.6%.”

So per the article, the 44.6% capital gains tax rate would apply to people making $1million or more. Which according to a Google search is about .1% of the population.

From the article “If passed, the billionaire tax would be a minimum of 25% for households with net worth exceeding $100 million.”

Per a Google search, there’s about 10k Americans whose household has a net worth of $100m.

Only thing regarding the repeal of section 1031 “Only real estate qualifies, and it must be of like-kind. It has to be business or investment property, not your personal residence.”

So it wouldn’t apply to personal residence. Well frankly I’m stunned that “Insurrection Barbie” would seemingly try to mislead people.

Maybe it’s been mentioned here before and I just missed it, but I’ve seen this mentioned a few times on Reddit.

Seems middle eastern countries have a penchant for “donating” billions to US universities.

     https://www.thefp.com/p/campus-rage-middle-eastern-roots-qatar

    • From 2015–2020, institutions that accepted money from Middle Eastern donors had, on average, 300 percent more antisemitic incidents than those institutions that did not.

    • From 2015–2020, institutions that accepted undisclosed funds from authoritarian donors had, on average, 250 percent more antisemitic incidents than those institutions that did not.

    • At least 200 American colleges and universities illegally withheld information on approximately $13 billion in undocumented contributions from foreign regimes, many of which are authoritarian.

My TikTok is all cooking videos and I have not really seen Pro-Pally stuff on MY TikTok but I supposed once you see one and watch it all the way through or "like" it, the algorithm is going to show you more and more.

Precisely. Doesn’t take much for the algorithm to kick in and put you in an endless echo chamber.

If I had to guess, the same place the nutjob Biden didn't win protests came from. The Kremlin.

TikTok has proven to be a driving force for Gen Z’s Pro Pal stances. Who runs TikTok? Who would want to sow discord amongst Dems and prevent American youth from turning out for Biden? Who would benefit from global sentiment turning against Israel?

It’s pretty easy to draw conclusions about how China, Iran and Russia can influence folks here. We can pretend it’s only Boomers and Facebook memes, but the reality is the reach is far easier and more impactful than we realize. Propaganda works.

  18. For bar scene, O St is generally a college aged crowd. It can be fun if that’s what you want, but I’d say stick to the Haymarket area. Leadbelly’s and Lazlo’s are probably my favorite restaurants down there. For Haymarket bars I’d recommend N Zone, Tavern on the Square, McKinney’s, Kinkaider Brewery and Bierhaus Maisschaler. The Railyard with Gate 25 and Longwell’s is a popular spot too. There’s also a cool vintage clothing store in the Haymarket called “Great Plains Vintage.” They have plenty of Husker stuff but have all kinds of other pro and college team stuff too.

For tailgating there’s places all over. If you’re in the Haymarket area you can easily access a bunch in the parking lots behind Pinnacle Bank Arena and into the Baseball/Softball stadiums. Roam around and mix it up with locals. Let em know you’re from out of town and it’s your first Neb game. You’ll get plenty of folks offering food and drinks.

For the Game, I’d say avoid South Stadium if you can. It’s not bad, I just think other parts of the stadium are more user friendly. I’m partial to sitting in North Stadium. Since it sounds like you just generally appreciate college football, I’d say get to your seats early enough to catch the pregame stuff with the band and so you can see the tunnel walk.

Sorry man, but there are nothing but common threads in this kind of activism and protest. That it hasn't yet reached the scale of Vietnam and the Civil Right movement doesn't change the motives, the players, and the public reaction. You don't have to like it. Folks back then didn't either. But it's entirely possible they've shaped the conversation.

Sorry man, but there’s not. Simping for a terrorist organization that wants to eradicate all Jews and infidels from Earth isn’t the same as a lunch counter sit in from the 60’s. Shaping the conversation with slanted views and deliberately misleading social media propaganda isn’t terribly helpful.

While you contend they are "shrieking about a ceasefire" they've been joined by politicians of every stripe and nation, who agree it's a more than viable option for stopping the death and starvation of innocents on a massive scale that Hamas clearly anticipated. And possibly avoiding a global escalation. The conversation has changed significantly in six months, and a lot of that wacky left stuff has gone mainstream.

Of course politicians with no true skin in the game or consequences can make empty requests for a ceasefire. Has any of it worked? Is it a good faith effort or is it empty political posturing? Do they really think there’ll be one or are they just getting a sound bite on record? Did Hamas see San Francisco’s City Council resolution for a ceasefire and say to themselves “Guys, this is what we’ve been waiting for. After millenia of fighting and killing, some nameless faceless politicians from thousands of miles away says we should stop.”

Hamas has repeatedly said they’ll never stop committing Oct 7th’s. How can anyone think a ceasefire is a reasonable request when that is one side of the bargaining table? It’s a lazy and unserious position.

I don't agree with coddled self-satisfied cosplaying college protestors on plenty of things, and I go out of my way to de-romanticize their melodrama. But I do have to bring my A-game because they actually are well-versed on the history of the region. More than most. Forced to do my homework, I realized how much s#!t I'd forgotten. Or had wrong. And yeah, they didn't hesitate to bring up Yemen, either. I implore them to understand that the difference between Biden and Trump remains just massive enough to deserve their vote. It's a tough sell.

Seems to me they actually do care about the Gazans, but your mileage may vary. If you think a cease fire isn't even viable, there's nowhere to go but down.

    I disagree.

If they don’t know the difference or need it painstakingly explained to them, then that tells me all I need to know about their position and that they aren’t serious people.

Ultimately I think we can just agree to disagree on this.
