  1. Why football seems to be going bad-

    1. Covid-19 nonsense.  Total over reaction by many.  These conditioned athletes have little to worry about- almost the issues as getting the flu.

    2. The current playoff.  Bowl don’t mean much unless your team is playing.  Only the two championship bowls are important.
we should play the bowls like they used to be done.  After the bowl season, pick the four teams to compete for the Championship.

Remember the days when sports writers used to go through convoluted bowl games outcomes to explain how your team could get into the top 10 or better.  Most of the bowl games were important to the poll.

    3. Rule changes.  Too many rules changes ruins the game.  Targeting is crap. The runner can use his helmet crown or hands to the face but the defender cannot.  If safety is truly the, then both should be subject to the penalty.  I think the entire penalty should be scrapped.  Most refs have played and can determine if someone was trying hurt it injure the opposing player- in that case, the ref should have the description to eject anyone for unnecessary roughness.  Blocking rule changes make it harder for smaller players to take the big monsters down.  Can’t hit low if someone else is touching him high.  Crack back restrictions.
sliding QB rules- IMO sliding should be a 15 yard and loss of down penalty for cowardice.

    4. Instant replay.  Too many interruptions.  It’s like giving the teams double the time outs and disrupts momentum.

    5. Player Portals and NFL early outs.  Players should play for their teams until they are drafted.  I don’t want to hear announcers whine about this team or the other playing without their key people.  Without them playing, the game has the importance of the spring game or NFL preseason games.

    6.  Lack of fundamentals.  Players seem to have the tackling Fonda mental of wrapping up the legs.  The big fat guys seem to like the bear hug tackle and get dragged for 3-5 yards after contact.  The little guys seem to adopt the bartering ram tackle with few wrapping up the legs.

He could have managed the clock a bit better (we left the game with an unused timeout, and used the other two on dead balls after all) to give us more time for creativity in play-calling, but that wasn't too much of an issue.

Way, way more of an issue is the playcalling from 1st & 20 onwards. Four straight plays where it looked like every single route took forever and went all the way into the endzone. Adrian had to throw each one falling away off his back foot because they took so long, and the middle/underneath was wide open for the taking.

Mind-boggling how Frost didn't put Adrian in a position to succeed from the point of the holding penalty on. I don't put the last four plays on AM at all.

I see it as on the last minute- the O line could have done better and Martinez threw some bad passes.  Maybe, if the line gave him a few more seconds, his passes would not have been off his rear leg.

None of what your said is wrong.  You are 100% correct.  We had fans on here calling for his head year one.  They are still calling for his head!!!  Look at the schedule, anyone would say that this was an impossible year to grade a coach and hold him to his record.   He is far more competitive than anyone other coach we’ve had in the last 20 years.   We don’t have blowout loses and we are in games till the very end of every game.   Ohio state was up 49-0 in the second quarter!!!!  That’s something we’d have seen from Bo.  We are close, so very close.  This team is fast, strong and competitive against multiple top 10 teams.

My hope is that the fire we saw in frost on that no call pi will ignore this team. Scott and his team will play with a little anger and something to prove.   They have a year or two to prove they have a killer instinct and I think they show it!

I think Frost’s major fault is that he failed to make changes/corrections in the last four years on recurring problems.  We need a coaching team that develops over years- not an unstable coaching rollover.  Frost is the head coach responsible for coaching team.  I think Frost should have been fired except that he fired the most blatant problem coaching areas.  I believe his most important task is find  a great O line coach and a road grader line that effectively pass block when needed.  A close second is the special teams and kickers.    A lot of current problems’ impacts will lessen if the O line gets first downs for long drives, no penalties and capitalizes field position from good kickers, special teams and defense.  Didn’t Devaney preach field postition and ball control?
Also, find a defensive back coach equal to Warren Sanders.

I wonder if we could get the team some medals of some sort for best 3-9 team in history. Put it next to the Natty trophies.

Should be a special bowl game for the best 3-9 teams and another for the two worst teams. May be very interesting games to watch.

Based on everything that transpired over the past week, I strongly believe that the next two games are the most important games in Frost’s tenure. If he wins both games, the team gains much needed momentum going into next season and we get off to a hot start. Lose these two games and that signals the beginning of the end for Frost’s tenure. I do not believe in easy schedules. We have proven that any BIG Ten team can beat us and they can even spank us at our own back yard. So, if we do not start winning and get on a hot streak, this will be over by next October. Let us hope that Frost realizes how important these last two games are.

If we win both games, recruiting would benefit the most.  I also think that Jojo Domann not playing will hurt.  His leadership and play is much bigger than the number of tackles he makes each week.

Martinez will still be there with his limitations. The O Line will be the biggest problem again.  I don’t expect these next two games to be much different than the past close losses.
Can’t tell if the offensive coaches’ firings will be a downer or not.  They need to do well In order to get the next job.  The offense players are not going to improve with a bye- they are still the same.

biggest variable- the play calling.  Lubbick is going but Frost was doing much of it.  Does he change in a week???

Spread offenses have a classic Achilles heel: what happens when you're in the red zone and there's no room on the field to spread the defense out? I think the problem becomes more acute in the Big Ten than it does in the PAC or AAC, or even the Big 12. And obviously, it's been a huge problem for Frost's offense the last few years.

From what I gather, Frost's plan to address that this year was to switch to more of a power-based scheme in the red zone. But I think it was just too much of a stretch: not enough time to rep such a different philosophy along with the 'base' offense, and players who weren't suited to run both types of offenses.

So I would guess that the next logical step is to look for an offense with more of a power element to it, that can be run anywhere on the field. Exactly what form that will take will probably depend more on the coaches available than anything. It'll probably require a change in recruiting philosophy, although to some extent I think Frost has already been moving in that direction.

Good comments but moot- until he gets a great offensive line and receivers who can block- no scheme will be successful.  He needs a line that can be reliable road graders but quick enough to pass block.
Personal preference- Frost needs to move to more of a north- south game using power running and passing with more use of ends and recrivers over the middle in 5-15 yard range.   No more of this passing into the flats for one or to yards.

With our WR core, although who knows how many are around after next season, but needing to be a bit different with a well below average offensive line, Leach's innovation may work at Nebraska. I mean the guy got recruits to Lubbock, Pullman and is doing well in Starkville, MS, I could think he would be able to get guys to Lincoln, NE too. So he is known to work within outpost locations and he finds ways to win.

I actually think Leach would love Nebraska, he's certainly a different type of coach and nothing you'd expect at Nebraska, but he is good at what he does. It would be a weird fit, but at the same time maybe a perfect fit?

After Leach’s antics at Texas Tech, I would not want him at NU.  I would prefer Pelion over Leach.

  8. In the 4th Qtr, 6 points behind, 4th & 3, and you some mojo going; and you decide to kick a field goal (and it misses)!!!!!  The Coach should reconsider staying here next year.

With OSU’s speed and outstanding D line, why call so many slow developing plays to the outside or throw short to the flats?  The play calling is weak IMO.

Way too many missed tackles and Yards After Contact.  The O line cannot hold the line long enough for Martinez’s skill and decisions.   The O line is still weak.  They cannot perform at an acceptable level through the whole game placing too much reliance upon the defense.

Next year will be a rebuild year as the seniors leave and good ones sign up for the portal or leave the NU.

  9. The revolving door that referred to was about Callahan, Riley, Pedersen, Eichorst and the last AD.  The changes in Asst coaches ripples through the organization in recruiting and player development. We fired two coaches already and we are still losing.  We did not gain anything and we have no reason to believe a new coach will do better.

A few weeks ago, I thought it would be a two win season.  Now I think the only possible future win is Purdue but it’s not a given with this team.

We have good runners and receivers and a fair defense.  The team has improved this season but are still losers.

We also have weak offensive play calling, weak QB, poor kicker, poor tackling and an average, at best, offensive line.
Based upon the team’s improved playing in the past month and our track record on head coach hires since Solich; Frost should probably could be retained but there must be some assistant coach changes and the addition of a special teams coach.

After losing to Purdue in a game we should have won—- my earlier comments are still valid.  With a bye last week, the play was the same and Martinez made key mistakes that list this game.  He should be benched and start developing the QB for next year.  A new guy can’t do any worse now since I expect we will lose all remaining games.

  11. Recruiting this year will be a problem.  I expect the better players to look for other schools.

i don’t like the Frost tenure so far but I don’t think he should get fired this year.  The team has okayed better this year losing close games against tough opponents.
We would have beat Purdue if you discount Martinez and his bad throws and bad decisions.

Bench Martinez and maybe okay him as a receiver.  Try another QB to get experience for next year.  Get a line coach and recruit O lineman this year and try to hold onto the current receivers and running backs.  Work on ball control and special teams.
Bottom line-  we have had a revolving door for coaches and AD’s since we fired two winning coaches (Solich and Pelion).  Constant turmoil in coaching is not a solution unless we can pony up $100 million to get Saban or equal.
We need a QB who plays like Brady or Rogers instead of Jekyll & Hyde QB.

I could never understand the hate that he got for a couple of years.  He took over a D that flat out couldn't tackle and wanted to have nothing to do with any contact.  The fact that in year 1, as hard as it was to watch tackles being made 10 yards downfield on a dive play, that they at least tackled people was impressive to me.

Lamar Jackson was flat out terrible when Chin got here.  In one year he was a decent player.

They still can’t tackle!!!  Look at the Yards After Cintact, missed tackles and the techniques (grabbing high or battering ram without wrapping up ortaking out the legs).

At this stage, it’s just poor coaching.

Ok totally made up penalty here, but I'm flagging this for delay of reply for a disconcerting post. Like the refs I just totally made that crap up too.

I have no idea how disconcerting talk is a delay of game BUT when I played many decades ago, you could get a penalty if the defense called out signals during the snap count after the offense was “SET”.  I assumed that was the penalty but it’s still bewildering.

    1. Our fanbase whines more about refs than any other fanbase

    2.  Play calling was better in the second half.

    3. Martinez would have had a 30 yard gain if he would have went left instead of straight. Dude is a good player but he crumbles under pressure and can't make the plays to win the game.

    4. Defense played a great game.

    5. Offensive line is looking much better.

    6. Frost needs another year.

Tackling was poor allowing far too many yards and first downs after first contact.

The offensive line still has trouble blocking up the middle for short yardage.

  16. We are improving but we beat ourselves again.  I don’t want to imply that Michigan is not good- they are.  But we should have won.

there were a few penalties, a turnover at the worst possible moment.

We need to improve a lot of things it I believe we lost because our tackling is very bad.  How many yards after contact were given up and how many tackles were missed?  I could not count the number of times the Blackshirts failed hit in the waist or thighs and did not wrap up the runner’s legs.  I would bet that over half of Haskins yards came after initial contact.

    Its fundamentals!!!

I think we're beyond that at this point.  Frost cannot stop getting out of his own way and he's known the issues for 4 years and other than getting rid of an OC, he's done absolutely nothing to fix these issues.  This rests solely on Frost.

I think his play calling is bad.  Too many 1-2 yard runs up the middle leading to a 3rd and long predictable pass.  He (and the QB) needs to stop throwing in the flats on or about the LOS.  Football is a north-south game on the other side of the LOS.  Too many end and receivers were open over the middle between 5 and 15 yards deep.
We have the best set of receivers that I can recall in 40 years.  The defense is good enough to play the top ten teams.

The special teams and play calling are bad.  The offensive line is not consistent, back and forth between good and bad many times in the same game.Frost should stop calling plays- be a head coach.
