  1. Tommy Armstrong is a great athlete and should play in the NFL. But, I don't think it will ever be as a QB. Right now, he lacks the ability to stay in the pocket, do the reads and throw on time and accurately. His mechanics are bad. He throws best on the run and he is a big threat as a runner. I don't see any coach, including Farve, getting his instincts, reflexes and mechanics changed this coming summer.

Armstrong would be the perfect QB in our old option and I formation run offense. He would be a great running back, wide back or wide receiver in the pros. He does not have the experience now as a receiver but he is a solid athlete with speed.

  2. I did not think they would win the last two games. The Huskers have a lot to play for: reputation, bowl invitation and pride.

If they play like they did against Michigan State, they could win. Armstrong cannot throw interceptions if we want to win but he will have to run more and do more play action pass. I think the defensive line nad linebackers will do okay. Victory will probably depend on the defensive backs doing their job better than most of the games this year. If they would just look back for the ball instead of just following the receivers, we will do good.

  3. It was my understanding that several decades ago, Devaney and Osborne got recruiting tips and help from former players and high school coaches. I wonder if the high school coach ties in and around Nebraska were cut by Callahan and Pelini?

The scholarship limitations means you can't everyone but it seems like a lot of very good players were lost to out of state schools.

  4. Why run Newby inside reapeatedly at the goal line? Questionable clock managerment. Coaching is still the main problem. Riley may become good but he wasted this season without coaching up to standard.

I think the players are better than their record this season. I saw one play where a safety or corner came up to the line on a sweep- whten the blockers came at him, he jumped back out of the play, allowing them to the edge and upfield. MSU scored about two plays later. How many times have we seen defensive backs not even turn around to look for the ball?

  5. Hondo is correct. But I am still upset at the defense having such a poor pass defense record for the year. I just can't believe the talent is that bad. They lack experience and I doubt the coaching has been as good as it needs to be for them. Phillp Dillard called in to a talk show and stated that Banker's defenses are not disguised and anyone can read them. That may not be Riley but Banker is on the iine for that.

  6.

Oklahoma - Gary Gibbs was hired to clean up Oklahoma's image, which he succeeded in, but was forced to resign after 6 decent seasons without signature big victories. OU hired Howard Schnellenberglerhage;i in 1995, who went 5-5-1, following the two previous seasons of 9-3, and 6-6 beforehand, but he unexpectedly resigned after the first season, saying, "in recent months a climate has developed toward the program, understandably in some cases and perhaps unfairly in others, that has changed my outlook on the situation. A change could help improve that climate." OU then hired John Blake, who went 3-8, 4-8, and 5-6, was fired, and led to the hiring of Bob Stoops.

Pretty sure Howie was forced out at OU.

Shellenberger beat us for a national championship. Blake was one of most successful recruiters for a short time. We fired Craig Bohl as our DC, he wins three championships at NDSU, and is now losing most games at Wyoming. Callahan gets fired at Oakland and Nebraska and then is lauded as an offensive guru with the Jets and Cowboys. Too bad the good coaches don't have a "future star" tattooed on their foreheads when idiots like Eichhorst go on a personal hiring spree.

  7. I don't know what kind of job Eichhorst has done as the AD. I think his method of hiring Riley was poor and his judgement bad. Perlman should know if he needs to leave Nebraska with a new AD in place. Perlman is the head of the Univerisity and not a football expert. He should not get a lot of blame for this season but he should be thinking about the future.

Someone {who???} needs to takek Riley out behind the barn and beat him up around the head to get some fire in him. Some assistant coaches need to go and Riley needs to make some changes in himself to turn the this Titanic around.

Its too early for firing another head coach. We should not have hired him but we did. Give him another year to show he identify the problem and make some immprovements. He cannot continue with a pro style offense here and his defensive coordinator is not up to the task. The defensive line play is better and the linebacker play seems to be improved against the run. Pass defense is very very bad. Riley needs to act and that means firing a friend. If he won't, then Riley needs to go too.

The offense needs to be changed. They should adopt Osborne's offensive philosophy (video) provided on one of the other threads. The only change would be to add some more passing to make sure we can recruit good receivers. We need to a run dominated game in the first half (65-35 ratio) and then run a clock killing run offense in the second half (85-15 ratio). The run heavy offense will get defenses tweaked to stop the run and dare you to pass like the Osborne and Solich years. Passing is a way to stop the defenses from crowding the box and nice to have when playing the Top 20 teams.

If we have a great kicking game and stop makingg dumb penalities, we will be back in the national spollight soon.

  8.

Nebraska doesn't win another game this year.

Sadly, this is very possible. A 3 win season with 9 losses? FDR may have been the President the last time that happened? Or maybe we never lost 9?

    Pelini must feel vindicated now.

  9.

Where the hell do you people just realize that if we just execute, things usually go our way! If we don't have the players to execute, then we need to get them...

This is something Bo Pelini would say...

And then True would lambast him for it.

Haha! Yep you guys are right and it is funny. Key difference here though and I know most of you won't get it or even care to read this, but the big difference is that I supported Bo for about the first 5 years. Hell, f#*k that, I even supported Bo in his final year when he swore he had seen the light and some changes were coming.

7 years in, we watched the same team do the same stuff in the same schemes.

If you can't respect the difference there, then piss off and quit talking to me.

I do see the difference. Except, we're doing the same things, and worse. If it was bad for Bo, it has to be bad for Riley too.

Not sure how much to put on Coach Riley and his staff yet.

Watching the games, the players are there, they are in position to succeed. They are not executing and they are not making plays.

Too many experts here throwing the coaches under the bus and not even talking about the players.

A defensive back watches the WR catch the ball and then misses the tackle, and tha'ts the coaches fault?

Ryker throws a pick on a horrible pass and the first and following comments here are about Langsdorf?

Gimme a break guys, these players are really doing a poor job this year. Period. It's all about how much ownership you think Riley and his staff have in this team and right now, I seriously question how much this is "their team".

Coaches need to put the players in position to succeed. Purdue has the worst rush D in the B1G, and we abandoned the run. Our secondary has been torched by every QB we've faced, Banker says "oh, we can make adjustments" and we continue to put them on islands and put them in position to fail.

It's not just the fans questioning what's going on. It's former players and analysts across the country.

As a leader/manager/boss it is YOUR JOB to put people under you in the best position possible to succeed. Even if you don't have a team of rock stars, you do what you can. Nebraska isn't doing that.

A defensive back watches the WR catch the ball and then misses the tackle, and tha'ts the coaches fault? I think there is a lot of fault to go around. I do think the coaches set the tone and define the standards. In the case of the DB, was he taught to stay on the WR or to play the ball? There is some technique that needs to be taught. I would imagine that the DB's attitude and ego need some coache's attention also. The pass defense has been a problem since the first game. What improvement or changes have been made?

  10.

Keep fighting Blackshirts! This fan base is behind you and the coaches no matter what! We got your back!

    Haha! sh#t........

Come on man. No one here is against the team. You seem to blame them and give the staff a pass.

Come on man, no one here is against the coaches, you seem to blame them and give the staff a pass.

I keep the balance. I'll tell you when it's one or the other or both.

Players have been in position to win this game and have made too many mistakes and not made enough plays to cover them up.

Really...so when has it been on the coaches?

The Illinois game. No doubt about it. The rest of the games have been a little bit of both. This one and last week was mostly all players.

The tone of the game and mindset of the team is set in the off-season and Sunday-Friday in practice. That is on the coaches to build their culture. 10 months is plenty of time to establish a strong culture. Listen to how Harbaugh did it through tough practices, high expectation, and accountability in the same amount of time Riley has been at Nebraska.

The players choose to quit on this team, but the coaches allow them.

As a coach, you have to know this.

I really think this was a unique situation Riley walked into. I don't think this was a place anybody was going to walk into and just "change the culture". There's some stuff ingrained pretty deeply here. Combine that with the gut wrenching losses to start the season, and I think it went the wrong way quickly.

You might be right. I can understand their situation, but I just can not give the coaches a pass.

I think some of the players were attached to Pelini and some of his assistants- apparenlty one maintained contract after being fired. That was a bad situation. Eichhorst hired Riley without a lot of interviews or thought. Nebraska is a power or option culture and neight Eichhorst, Pedersen, Callahan or Riley seemed to appreciate it. My biggest objection to Riley's hire is that he from the NFL- West Coast passing cabal. That is not Husker football.

  11.

I would like to suggest that to put a good face on this season that we have a bowl game in Memorial Stadium against one of the other Nebraska state colleges. Maybe we could get a win to end the season??????

Neb vs the 8 man state champions.

That's risky! If they are champions, they might beat us. The champion eight man team probably has 8 great wallk-ons to be starts on Iowa, KSU or

    Wisconsin.

  12. This is probably a rehash. I hate the alternative uniforms- no matter what year. I don't like Riley's choice to go with all white travel uniforms. Enough with the uniform crap. Go traditional- red jerseys with white pants for home and white jerseys and with red pants for away.

Coaches- leave it alone and stay with Traditions of Excellence. Don't mess with the uniforms. If Addidas comes knocking with promises of new alternatives- just tell them to put their alternative uniforms up theirs in full rectal defilade.

Riley- you have so many things to work on than to try changing uniforms that identified a class football program for decades.
