No matter who it is, if they are hired the week after thanksgiving, don't expect a "stellar recruiting class" a few weeks later.  It's just not going to happen.  Now, some coaches might have a better class by that point than others, but, the 2024 class is the real test.

The right coach can flip recruits in a short amount of time.

We need to beat Illinois, remove the interim coach tag & let the recruiting flow.  Next year will be really bad, if we can't get some recruits.  Who is going to come to a school without knowing who the coach is.

Recruits will know who the coach is by then.

...and if it's not Joseph the new coach will be in the $7.5 to $9 million range and that caliber of coach will be expected to have a stellar recruiting and transfer class from the git go.

To be fair, me and my brothers thought Frost came across really poorly with a big old dip in during games and at press conferences.  We just thought that Frost looked unprofessional, and not something we encounter in our white collar jobs.  I am sure that endeared him to a good portion of Nebraska, as that "he's just like us".  Of course, it wouldn't have been any issue of Frost was a winner.

Now Trev has to have a collar color conversation with candidates also?

Wait. Now we're arguing that Mickey Joseph is the ONLY person who can save the entire football program?

I'm not arguing that at all.

Apparently if you follow along, Scarlet's biggest concern is losing Joseph and therefore also losing Lousiana talent coming to Nebraska.

Sorry I didn’t spell it out in exact terms. Those who were involved in the conversation already knew what I meant: Top 15 classes on a regular basis. Who?

Sorry to butt in to a conversation I apparently wasn't involved in....but apparently there isn't a good answer to your question except if we lose Mickey Joseph and his recruiting prowesss we might as well recommend to Ronnie Greene that the football program be dropped

I never said I wanted him as HC. But he recruiting ability is undeniable.

still waiting for someone to provide names of candidates who can regularly land Top 15 since there are so many

There are 15 to be exact.

IF Joseph gets the HC gig, I believe he will look for the best OC he can find and Whip would get moved to analyst if he wanted to stay around. The only way Whip would stay on as OC is if Joseph couldn't find a quality OC to take his place. If NU will open up the checkbook then I dont see that being a problem

The checkbook was opened for Whip and he's OC and QB coach with excellent credentials.

We gotta put an end to the hindsight. Nebraska hiring Scott Frost in 2017 was a no-brainer. I don't recall anyone fretting he only had 2 years of HC experience. I do recall everyone citing his ability to go from 0-12 to 13-0 in those two years. Other prestigious programs seemed to think his resume was just fine.

Isn't it fun when we agree?

I will gently push back on Scott's relationship with Nebraska power brokers circa 2021/22. There were loads of built-in caveats when Frost was retained. And after Georgia Southern, those same power brokers apparently had no trouble ponying up $7.6 million to have Scott empty his desk immediately.

You and I agree more than either probably lets on.

Great points, but one thing concerning regarding Frost (more in hindsight) was he had 2 years of HC before coming to NU.  Just 2.  It wasn't like he progressed through multiple spots as a HC.  He came into a tough situation that unfortunately he did not have the acumen nor staff to right the ship.  I think his overall lack of being a HC hurt him tremendously.  Frost was kept longer because he was Frost.  Should've been fire after 2020 if not earlier.

Of course he was retained mostly because of his relationship with Nebraska power brokers.

His resume' was better than good though.  An undefeated season in your second year as a head coach will skyrocket your stock.

One chapter as a HC.  Frost’s big fail is being a HC mostly.  I hate his offense but he was hired, imo, for the following:

    1.   13-0 season at UCF

    2.    His Neb heritage

    3.    His ‘coaching trees’

His ‘leadership’ and staff management, etc etc were barely considered - he had none beyond UCF.   His monumental fail at NU was simply put - he proved to be a very poor HEAD COACH.  A player magnet (WRs, RBs, a QB) that repelled as many as he attracted.

Player development (big picture stuff generally) was relatively unknown.  Two seasons at UCF was not enough.

Give him two chapters if you will.  Fans judged him by his cover mostly and saw (imagined really) so much they wanted to see.  His resume was probably right to be hired by NU as OC.  Not HC.

If you have an undefeated season as a HC you're not looking to become an OC as a "next step".

A nice stat that's pretty telling.  Regardless if our foe was Indiana.  Never want to say what could've been had changes been made earlier......

It's probanly more impressive that it was against Indiana based on the number of offensive plays they average per game.

Trev is the primary person to make the call about who should be leading these young men on the field. Frost should have been fired for integrity issues first and foremost.  Add in the poor record on the field and there is no reason this program and these players should have had to endure one more day of Frost's dereliction of duties.

Did I ever say Adrian played great every game? Yes, the Purdue game he played last year was crappy. The Michigan game he played fairly well, until he should have been called down for forward progress stopped and an All-American DE dove at his knee and another guy stripped him of the ball. Maybe if Adrian was surrounded by competent coaching and good talent, he wouldn’t have been put in situations where everything depended on him

I'm sorry the refs and coaching caused Martinez' turnovers.

Stupid comments lead to even dumber ones.  Where would have we been without Adrian against Michigan last season?  yeah his one fumble cost us something, but I think without him we are not in the game even.  He had turnover issues, but some of that was in play calling.  Looking back on our seasons with Amart, we were pretty obvious in our plays.  Most of us could call the next play that Frost would run......he was like an open book.  Predictable.  I am doing nothing but wishing him the best for this season.  To even further that, this also digs in the claws a little bit more on Frost.

So am I stupid or dumber?

This is water under the bridge and we all know how Mike Riley turned out, but at the time the hiring was certainly defensible. Mr. 50% actually had a similar record to Frank Solich at Ohio, coaching at the least desirable University in the Pac 12 where he turned the program around and occasionally outcoached guys like Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh. He won a Pac 12 Coach of the Year, and in 2015 had just been voted second most underrated coach in college football by his peers. Over the years Riley had been courted by Alabama and USC. He rarely came up on candidate lists because he'd turned those jobs down to stay in his hometown Corvallis. The recruiting services thought hiring Riley was a coup. Other coaches and former NFL players sent their kids to Nebraska because of Riley.

Word is Eichorst approached Brett Bielema first, so going with Mr. Nice Guy wasn't the first priority, either.

If you go back and look at the coaching hires of 2015, you'll find a lot of the coaches you think we wanted no longer with their program, either.

Given that there are rarely more than three or four no-brainer choices for Head Coach -- and they're already highly compensated elsewhere -- that transformational head coach is a bit of a crapshoot.

If you find the Riley hire defensible at the time, then you view the Nebraska football program with approximately the same importance as Harvey Perlman.

I don't think boosters and regents should have too much say, but I do think Ted Carter (U of Nebraska President) and Ronnie Green (UNL Chancellor) should be sounding boards for Trev and what he's thinking for the next head coach.  I am sure Trev had already spoken to Carter and Green about what attributes and experience they are looking for in the next head coach, and that will help narrow down candidates along the hiring process.

Why wouldn't boosters have much of a say?

.....you are aware of how Mel Tucker got bank at Michigan State I'd assume?

That's a weird flex. I think we all have opinions on how money should be spent. I'm keenly aware it's not my call.

It would almost be like me pointing out the phrase is I COULDN'T care less, not I COULD care less.

How money should be spent or how other people's money should be spent?

I could care less about your attempted grammar deflection.
