  1. Enough with chip kelly. Marriotta was a one in a million qb. Ala Tommy Frazier. Marriotta made chip look good. Look at them now. 500 team going nowhere fast

Kelly only had Mariota for one year (his RS FR year) His other QBs were Thomas and Masoli. Cool story tho bro.

  2. What has Chip Kelly ever won or even played for? He wasn't the coach when they played in the playoffs last year....lost to Auburn few years back......struggle to beat Stanford every season, struggled to beat USC every year................Kelly would do what here?

Several issues come to mind. Nebraska doesn't have that mega rival game to draw in fans, recruits, and national attention. This is gone. When can be bring back OU, or even KSU for a rival like game?

Chip Kellly=Bill Callahan. At least Callahan coached a Super Bowl team. Kelly ca't even win enough games at Philly to even make it another year.

When Nebraska hired Bo, Paul Johnson was available, and its been stated was interested in this job. Think about that. Also think about Maryland. If they get a splash hire, and they could, they play in the big boy divison of the Big 10. This will make NU fans sick.

Another reason to love the Big 10.

Lol...you do realize that Chip Kelly took Oregon to 4 straight BCS games when he was the HC at Oregon right?

  3. Scott Frost would at least bring the fan base under one roof. This is why Nebraska is in trouble. There is not one candidate out there that everyone can get behind. Not one. Pelini was thought of as that guy, but as he went here, it was obvious this job was meant to be a stepping stone job for the Buckeyes.

Chip Kelly- runs a spread system, short quick passing game, runs 50% of the time, but throws it around more than Riley. He is Riley 2.0.

Richt isn't a good enough recruiter/coach to win here. Gets good players at Georgia, but after losing 2 in row, sounds like his time is up at Georgia after this season, wait, he was suppose to be fired several different times, and has been able to win enought to keep his job.

Nebraska isn't the same job it was 15 years ago. Baylor, TCU, Utah, Georgia are all better jobs in power 5 conferences already. It would be different if TCU was still in the WAC and if Utah was still in the MTN WEST.

Reality is these guys have been there during the previous 12 years of coaching searches, they didn't want this job or they would have had their agent contact the University of Nebraska. Saban told Bama he would take the job before they fired who was the coach. These guys pick who they want to coach for, not so much the school picking them. This job is not worth the struggles to a coach who can go anywhere and be embraced. Riley proves that no matter who get hired here, 50/50 on fan reactions. 50/50 on booster support. As long as this is that way, Riley may be the best possible coach on board.

Scott Frost would bring this back together. He can coach, he can recruit, he is fresh and a new face. Most of all, he is a Nebraskan. He gets it, and knows what it takes for this program to win, to be a winner. Most comments on this board are "we need to run the ball more" " these coaches don't understand Nebraska football" Can't pass the ball in this weather" " need to run more"

Any way you dice this up, until whomever is coach is backed 100%, this job is not very desirable from any perspective unless your family, and your back by the family. FROST is that guy.

Ummm...Chip Kelly's offense is run based. Check Oregon's rushing numbers when he was the OC. They averaged over 270ypg rushing.

  4. It's funny to see the armchair keyboard warriors argue against TO ideas. smh

Other big reasons that system in the OP works better here is because of the walkon program and the homegrown talent. And, it's easier to recruit the types of players needed to run that system at Nebraska than to try and compete for recruits with all the warm, sunny teams.

I certainly don't expect Riley to even consider changing. Something about leopards and old dogs and spots and new tricks.

The emergence of schools like Ohio, Wyoming and FBS schools like UND, SDSU, etc have also really cut down on the amount of kids that would probably walk on at NU. College is crazy expensive nowadays.

  5. Duke - I couldn't agree more. Excellent topic which I have brought up many tiimes. In my opinion, NU will NOT get to national title prominence again until it goes back to adopting Osborne's blueprint. I've given reasons in other posts, but here's another thing....I think a lot of fans have lowered their standards to where they think about "winning the Big 10 championship", or even worse, "winning the West division". Who cares? I couldn't give a damn about a conference or divisional championship. Means nothing to me. Just tells me you outplayed 6 or 13 other teams. What I care about is NATIONAL prominence, being #1 again, being taken seriously (feared) by other teams, being physical and running teams over.

Having a cookie cutter passing offense is Ok for guys like Riley who never won anything, but to get back to winning NATIONAL TITLES and being in the hunt for them year after year (like today's Alabama's, Ohio State's, etc.) requires a SOLID running game, and for that...Riley is NOT the answer. He MIGHT get NU to 6-6, 7-5, maybe even 8-4 on a good year, which maybe for some fans is good enough. But he will NEVER get NU to national titles (or even in the conversation of one).

Undone - you're right.....what one personally wants to see run as far as offensive philosophy and what could actually work can be entirely two different things. A lot of fans like passing. I hate it. I despise it. To me, it is WUSSY football. It's throwing the ball over someone's head so they can't get to it (basically, monkey in the middle). I'd rather run a team over, physically beat them up. With rule changes over the years, they have geared the game more to passing and less to running. They've taken the brutality of the game away. Osborne had it right...EVERYONE (including the QB) blocks, everyone (including QBs) runs (and no slides or running out of bounds). Qb's should not be given any special status when it comes to the BRUTALITY of the game...they should hit and be hit just like everyone else. No prima donnas.

So since you mentioned preference, I will say my preference is to run the ball (80/20 ratio or higher, 90/10 even). But to do that you need the right coach who knows the ins and outs of the running game...and Riley is not that coach. He is not a run-the-ball TECHNICIAN. So we are stuck with Riley and his West Coast wussy throw the ball around offense, which, like I said, will absolutely not bring NU back to national titles, hence, it is not good enough for me. I won't settle for "winning the West division". I want PANCAKES. When is the last time you heard the word Pancakes? Offensive linemen used to compete to see who could get the most pancakes in a game. They took pride in it. They enjoyed firing off the line to smash the defensive linemen into the ground on run plays. What happens on a pass play? Offensive linemen BACKPEDAL, forming a nice cushy pocket for the QB (in other words, very passive, and defintiely not gonna lead to any pancakes).

So to sum up....my preference...run the ball. What will bring Nebraska back to the promised land of national title?....run the ball (but only with the right coaches who know what they're doing and are true technicians in rushing attack philosophy and execution).

Your philosophy works great when you have unlimited rosters and the old scholarship rules where they could offer everyone under the sun. 85 schollies makes things just a wee bit tougher. Solid rant though.

  6.

The non-co-DC thing is rather interesting. That means we got a multi-year coordinator at D1 programs to come here to be a position coach.

Michigan just hired an NFL OC to be a position coach. They also hired a former USC associate head coach as a position coach.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/01/16/michigan-announces-2-more-assistant-football-coaches/21884403/

I would have liked to have seen more big name hires at Nebraska, but hopefully this staff will be good. I am slightly worried about Banker.

Jedd Fisch is getting hired as the OC. I'm not sure what the big deal is there. The Jaguars were a goddamn dumpster fire on offense.

  7. I may have missed this from another thread and if I'm not allowed to link content from the OWH Bottom Line please delete.

Part 2 addresses In state vs. out of state. I thought the panel did a good job of describing it. If you are worried about losing kids to Ohio, Wyoming, Iowa then that is a terrifying sign of the level of talent Nebraska is going after.

  8. I understood cutting football with the leap to D-1 it was going to be really, really hard with Title IX plus the conference they play in. It's hard for me to be impartial on the wrestling issue since I wrestled, my coaches in HS were UNO wrestlers and I have a lot of friends/acquaintances that wrestled for UNO. I can't believe they didn't give Denney a shot at making the program self funded. They could've done it. With that being said, I have no desire to go back and re-hash that argument as it was brutal.

I agree with what a previous poster said, as a college football player, Trev Alberts absolutely belongs. As a man, I don't care for him.

  9.

Any reason why he's transferring? Kind of odd for a 2 year starter..

Graduated. The Russell Wilson transfer and play somewhere your last year.

No, I get that. Russell just didn't transfer for the hell of it. He wanted to win and there were thoughts he might not be QB1 as hard as that may be to believe. So, what's this guys situation?

I thought Wilson transfered because O'Brien didn't want to let him play baseball anymore....man, I just don't quite remember. I could absolutely see your point being the reason as well as I think that's when NC State had Mike Glennon getting ready to 'emerge'.

  10. Love Randy, but I'm somewhat shocked he is still this high. What position will he play. Way too small for DE and has never played OLB. Is he fast enough? Instincts?

He'll be a pass rushing specialist and situational run player His position will depend on the team that drafts him naturally. The best current pro matches I can think of are guys like Bruce Irvin and Von Miller that I think Gregory could project to. I agree with some of the other posters ITT that he needs to pack on some muscle.

  11. I've been curious as to why Oregon State suddenly seems to care about football. They are paying Andersen a million more than they were paying Riley. As soon as Riley leaves they announce a huge plan for facility upgrades. I'm not going to lie, that's part of what makes me nervous about the hire.

Also a 61 year old is not an up and coming head coach, you know what he does, you know who he wants to work with, etc. That is why his hire is low ranking in my opinion. Chances are he doesn't stay coaching long enough to get the big turn around we Husker fans hope for.

There might also be some Pac 12 Network money starting to funnel in as well.

  12. The only thing that didn't make sense to me was there were so many people who didn't know who Mike Riley is.

He's a pretty well-known guy in the world of college football.

No kidding here. I get that a lot of folks only focus on Nebraska football, but shoot Oregon State seemed like they were on ESPN's Thursday Night Game all the time. I still remember when they upset #1 USC in 2008, Quizz Rodgers ran for like 200 yards.

  13.

Isn't Davis considered one of the most promising hires on the staff?

There is "promise" and there are results.

Yes, there are no results for this staff at Nebraska yet. How awful of them?

We know Brown is a pretty good coach, but this doesn't make him the only pretty good position coach out there in the world. We also know Brown does not really recruit. And that he's been on the verge of retirement.

So, I don't think it's much a stretch to think this young guy who has spent three successful years at OSU, and four as an assistant coach for the 49ers under Harbaugh, is a good position coach and an able/willing recruiter.

If Ron Brown had been hired from another school by Mike Riley, I'm sure the complaint would be: 24 years and all he ever did was be a positions coach?

Bingo. +1 there. It's not like Brown isn't still going to have some exposure to the program through his FCA work.

  14. Why does everyone assume this is some sick perverted thing that he did. Like others have said sometimes h.s. and college age guys just do some dumb $hit. When I was in college one of the kids in a different fraternity house took the house Greek year book picture with his balls hanging out. It was really dumb and immature.... and completely f'ing hilarious. The guy became a legend and every guy who saw that picture laughed his ass off. Maybe Moss just thought it would be funny as $hit to go up and purchase something with his junk hanging out. For #uck sake he didn't rape a baby.

The problem is while Moss thought it was the funny, the Lincoln PD and the University of Nebraska didn't. Like it or not, athletes are going to be held to a higher standard and football at Nebraska are under an even bigger microscope. I have no data to back this up, but I think Moss's chance to play went out the window when Pelini got sacked.

  15. Not disagreeing, but "what" are you basing the thought that "SE has done a solid job" on…… What has he really done…. the one big thing is firing Bo, which is as much a negative as a positive among Husker Nation (Just look at HB the past month)…… In his 2 years, I haven't seen him do anything "great", but I also haven't seen him "screw" anything up (yet….time will tell with this latest move)>

I think I have made my point of view about HP clear. I have BIG FAT ZERO respect for him…..and can't wait for the day that someone else gets to take over.

Interesting take on Pearlman. I'm guessing you're looking through the lens of athletics and not academics (kinda generalizing the two). While I agree that HP may come across a little 'dated' and 'out of touch' at times it's very hard to argue that he hasn't done an excellent job in raising UNL's national profile in other areas. Heck, the move to the Big Ten is going to bring in how many untold millions of dollars?

  16.

Huge man crush on Steven Jackson he was a monster for the Rams. Too bad they essentially just sucked for the vast majority of his career, he deserved better. One of the last true bell cow RBs.

    Marshawn Lynch

I'm fully aware of Beast Mode (big Seahawks fan since Largent was @ WR). Notice I said, 'One of the last' and not, 'the last'. But now we're just nitpicking.

  17.

yeah, Paul Johnson is in his 7th year. Sound familiar? I was touting this guy when we had to have Pelini. Yes, this guy was out there when we had to have the fire of Pelini.

This guy is a class act, who this year beat Georgia, and could and should have beaten FSU. This guy has built something in his 7 year tenure. This is the program that all Nebraska fans should look at and wonder , HMMMMM.

Saying it again. GTech is fun to watch and they recruit and win alot of games every year. Johnson has a good product, and his product always appears shiny and new. Even if its the old Triple option. They looked the better team, the faster team, and more physical team on the field against the SEC # 2 team. They looked the part.

Agree wt you. While Gil was my 'emotional' pic in 2007 - Johnson was my mental pic for the HC job that went to Bo. I thought that if this guy can win wt the option at Navy and do it wt lessor recruiting advantages, he could do it in Lincoln. We'll he proved that the option can still work. Let's be realistic, most Ds are built to stop either a pro style or spread or read option. Not many Ds are prepared adequately to play the option. Even in the day when Tom ran it and Ds could prepare for it (whether it be our version or the wishbone version), when execute well, it was still almost impossible to stop. I just wonder what Johnson could have done wt our resources. He's done very well at GT.

I disagree a little with the bolded, I'd say above average is probably more appropriate. I'll give him a little bit more of the benefit of the doubt b/c GT is a tough school to get into academically although he's in very fertile recruiting grounds that should offset it quite a bit.

Johnson's records @ GT...one great year (Big Six bowl win) one pretty good year (losing to lol Iowa in the Orange although I can't hate too much as I won a bucket of cash on Iowa +6) one above average year (9 wins, first year) and then a mix of average to crappy years after that. I can't remember which poster mentioned it, but Johnson's offense hums with Justin Thomas running it. You get Vad Lee running it, you get .500 ball. As with every other offense, good QB play=good offensive results.

  18. I can't see Rex getting too much in the way of snaps at Cincy unless the injury bug hits like it did today, they are loaded at RB with Hill and Benard. I think Rex can make some hay for a team down the road ala Woodhead. He seems to have pretty good hands, if you couple that with good blitz pickup you'll hang around a while in the NFL.

  19. People want this amazing make believe staff consisting of Rex Ryan and Scott Frost and Ed Orgeron and Will Muschamp and Chip Kelly and Bill Belichick?

+1 to this. I guess I don't get it, if you assemble an all star support staff, in 2-3 years those guys are all gone and you have to replace them all again. The way I look at is, alot of these guys seem to be off the radar a little bit which I have little qualm with. If it works, awesome these guys will most likely stick around as they all seem to have good relationships with Riley. If it doesn't work, well the lot is getting flushed and you're in the same boat you were in with the first scenario.

  20. He *might* be able to get a P5 HC job in a couple years, it'll be at a pretty crappy school though if you made me guess (Wilson @ Indiana seems like a decent comparison).

  21. I think the chance of Frost being hired is near zero, but Riley should at least try to hire Frost. We need the best coaches available.

I think you're being generous with your percentages. Where would you slot in Frost, WRs coach?

  22. Notable B1G Ten Non-conference games next year: TCU, Oregon, Bama, Utah, Stanford, Miami, Va. Tech,

    SEC: Louisville, Arizona St, Oklahoma

The B1G Ten will play the Pac 12 (Sparty), Big 12 (Minnesota), and SEC (Wisky) champion next year, which other conference can say that?

I'd throw in a Taysom Hill led BYU team in the 'notable' mix. If he is 100% healthy, BYU will be a tough out for a lot of folks.
