  1. I would love to see Leonhard as our DC.
It would give everyone associated with (or rooting for) Wisconsin pause.

He knows the BigTen and I'll bet he would LOVE to have the opportunity to stick it to Wisconsin on a regular basis (as opposed to going to the SEC).
Besides, the BigTen has the money to pay him better than most places.

And you know what they say about a DC Scorned. :)

Back to my original train of thought though on the offensive scheme Rhule will run: I think one valid concern is actually being capable of getting a wide array of QB's with a lot of talent to commit.

This is cherry picking for sure, but let's look at Iowa. They haven't been landing good QB's at all. And it's not hard to speculate as to why; their scheme is horrible and it's not keeping pace with the larger landscape.

That said, Rhule will have enough buzz around him I think in the first two classes to land some good QB's. I think that's a safe bet. But, I don't want to run a dumbed down scheme just because it makes boosters & fans happy.

Rhule's history (and his sound bites) make it appear that he will run a "simplified" pro-style offense. That's Satterfield's M.O. also. This should appeal to any QB with aspirations of playing at the next level. To figure out why his offenses at Carolina weren't great, you have to look no further than the names of the QBs that his GM provided him: Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield. And Mayfield's problem isn't the line in front of him, which has improved each year under Rhule. Critics also put blame at the feet of his OC, Ben McAdoo - who you will notice is one coach that's not being asked to follow Rhule to Nebraska.

  3. Emphasis on the Line of Scrimmage is music to the ears of all Husker Fans. Everybody says it, but I do think this guy believes it.

Lots of interesting dominos to fall in the coming days. I'm guessing he will be meeting with the Assistant Coaches after this. I think a few will be asked if they would consider staying. I think others already have replacements waiting in the wings, but he will break that news to the coaches (which is how a Real Man would handle it). Some of the others are probably already fielding interest/offers from other schools. His staff is obviously the next area of focus, followed by recruiting and offers.

It is going to be an exciting week or two here.

Must be a decent recruiter.  He got a 4* QB commit last year and has another one this year.

Mickey Joseph taught us that part of the new college football landscape is that you might drag along a recruit or two when you change teams as a coach (Trey Palmer, for anybody in a coma). Wonder if Satterfield will bring anyone interesting with him?

  5. AND the rumor mill slides to a new topic…

I feel that Mickey & Busch are huge assets, but they would mean that Rhule replaces a couple of people in whatever assistant crew he feels responsible for & already values.

He would also have to be a pretty secure guy, because (just like the No. 2 QB is the fan’s most popular player when No. 1 is struggling) there will be a lot of fans hoping Mickey can grow into the HC gig. I believe Mickey knows how to defer to the HC, however hard that might be - if he is truly a fan of Nebraska and doesn’t feel he was screwed over by Trev & this process.

In a perfect world, Rhule keeps both of those guys, but I think if anybody has been paying attention they will see that both the of those guys are great hires anywhere.

If they go, I also fear how many players they make take with them.

I'm thinking this hire (if it's absolute) is a wait and see. He has had success rebuilding programs but there's one thing everyone is overlooking... state populations. Texas #2, Pennsylvania #5 and then you have Nebraska #37... In the two previous rebuilds (Temple & Baylor respectively) Rhule was surrounded with talent. That's not the case here so we'll have to wait and see.

Good point & one reason it would be a no-brainer to keep recruiter extraordinaire Mickey.

  7. Lane’s body language & eye contact screams “I’m not a good liar” here.

He may be able to make fun of reports of him going to Auburn - but he’s clearly going aomewhere & I think Nebraska makes too much sense for the things he’s already complained about at Ole Miss.

  8. (A) We live in an age where hiring a coach can mean some of his players following him to his new program. (See: Trey Palmer)

This means that part of getting better fast might mean those sort of transfers, in addition to the usual recruiting.

This article:  made me think a wacky-wacky thought:

How many Alabama assistant coaches and players would follow Nick Saban if Nebraska opened up the checkbook for him? What faster way to get a CEO Head Coach that can match wits with the BiG and set up a system that can groom MJ for the HC position in a few years?

Saban is 71, so not sure how long he’s interested in coaching but if you could open the checkbook for a shortcut back to Blue Blood relevancy, he would be The Guy to put Nebraska back on the map.

For the record, I still think it is going to be Lane Kiffin.

    Agreed.

MJ as a $1M associate head coach, recruiter, WR coach is a win.

Players want to be coached by coaches that put players in the pros. (Say THAT 3 times fast).
MJ put Chase in the NFL first round and Justin Jefferson is another MJ pro.

I would maintain that the reason Casey T. and Chubba Purdy wanted to both come to NU was because of Whipple and his having just coached and playcalled for the Heisman Trophy winning QB (now Steelers' starter) the previous year.

We will recruit top flight lines when we get assistant coaches with a history of putting those position players in the pros.

A school like Nebraska will not be able to build lines through NIL. That will still have to be HS recruits and development.  There simply aren't enough stud lineman available via transfer and they will be highly contested, often going to the highest profile schools. We can get Trey Palmers sure but you can't build a whole team that way.

You (and everybody +1-ing this comment) apparently lack reading comprehension. I’ll highlight this to make it simple

    for you:

    Quote

…more like a General Manager who manages the salary cap (N.I.L. money) AND potential transfers (both outbound and inbound) - in addition to the traditional High School & Jr. College recruiting.

You’ll notice I didn’t say which players (or positions) would come from which of those various avenues. My comment about O-Line & D-Line was more about how their selection seemed to bore Frost who focused almost exclusively on “playmaker” positions. (They are all playmaker positions, in my book).

  11. Many people commenting have still not figured out the new college football landscape. It is not just recruiting and player development any more. The N.I.L. and Transfer Portal mean that different metrics are now at play. It is now MUCH more like the NFL - which means recruiting must morph into basically being more like a General Manager who manages the salary cap (N.I.L. money) AND potential transfers (both outbound and inbound) - in addition to the traditional High School & Jr. College recruiting.

Mostly GONE are the days of getting kids in raw and expecting to have them for 4 or 5 years & kids waiting their turn to develop and maybe see the field as JRs and SRs. For a lot of programs it is now going to be a game of musical chairs, from year to year - identifying the biggest areas of need and attempting to fill them.

A college GM is going to need to figure out how to divvy up resources for the overall good of the team. A star QB transferring-in is only going to last as long as the O-Line assembled in front of him keeps him in one piece. The game of football starts on the O-Line & D-Line and they have been mostly after-thoughts around here for a while.

I personally believe that THIS is what TA means when he says he wants a CEO coach. But if you look at the NFL model, very few programs succeeded with the HC ALSO serving as the GM. The best programs had great GMs who gave the HC & staff the best roster to work with and it was their job to scheme them up and find mismatches on game day.

With smart use of the N.I.L. plus smart use of the transfer portal a turnaround CAN happen fast - and I believe that includes Nebraska.
