  1. Do NOT make the mistake of letting Colin Cowherd in your head and defining your reality. If you listen to him at ALL you know that he is not interested in being right, just "interesting". He also makes no bones about rooting for teams with big demographics - TV and radio-wise. (HINT: Nebraska is not a demographic that he is afraid to piss off.) He will make plenty of hay out of "Colin being wrong" if Mike Riley turns Nebraska into a National powerhouse again. There is no downside to him trashing Nebraska right now. 99% of the country will be eating it up, and he's all about ratings.

I have the feeling that Mike Riley is going to do just fine at Nebraska. And he is probably just setting the table for Danny Langsdorf to be his successor at Head Coach in a few years.

Two things: I'm not sure why Riley has not confirmed Langsdorf yet. Not yet signed on the dotted line? Secondly, what was wrong with Rich Fisher as WR Coach?

  2. After evaluating the resources, facilities, football revenues, (etc.) it appears to me that Mike Riley has been a competitive racer, even though he's been driving an AMC Gremlin. I look forward to seeing what he will do now that he has been given the keys to a Porsche.

Forget the number of wins. I would have been less surprised to wake up one day and learn that Pelini hit with a domestic abuse charge than I was to learn that he was fired after another 9-3 season. He was already a black eye on the State of Nebraska with his sideline behavior, regardless of how his players were conditioned to take it. SE knew it was only a matter of time before he was a black eye to the University. Undisciplined coach = undisciplined team. His post-loss press conferences were a continual embarrassment of blaming the players and rarely taking responsibility for anything.

Welcome, Mike Riley. Bo, don't let the screen door hit you on your way out.

  3. Just published at USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/bigten/2014/12/04/nebraska-mike-riley-coach-oregon-state-analysis/19908547/

By now, you've heard plenty about Riley, stuff like this: good football coach, very good evaluator of talent, even better guy. All of it's true, and only begins to scratch the surface. As you wonder where the hire came from, consider that odd flight way back when, accepting an invitation from a richer rival. Riley is unpretentious. Unconcerned about appearances. And completely unruffled by huge challenges like those posed by life in the shadow cast by a neighboring football power.

(...) Instead of a leap after a coordinator or a hot up-and-comer, the Huskers got a proven Power Five head coach with a track record of success despite adverse circumstances. He's unlikely to be overwhelmed by the expectations or surprised by the obstacles.

  4. The hiring story is not over yet. It is possible that, although he has not made lateral moves before now, Scott Frost may agree to come and be OC/Asst. Head Coach under a 61 year old who is signing his last big paycheck before retirement. That gives time to evaluate SF rather than just handing him the reigns, and even SF may see that as a win-win. Word is that Riley is bringing his DC, but no word on OC yet.

  5.

Nebraska currently has 21 players playing in the NFL. Oregon State has 19.

It may be worth noting that two of Oregon State's NFLers are QBs. Who was the last Nebraska QB to be on an NFL staff in October?

Also, both schools have two RBs in the NFL: Nebraska has Rex Burkhead and Roy Helu Jr.

Oregon State has Steven Jackson and Jaquizz Rogers.

Finally, look at the College Football Revenue between the two schools and tell me who is getting more "bang for the buck".

Nebraska: Expenses 18,649.947 (well, that may go up with Pelini's payout) vs Revenue $55,063,437 (a profit of $36M)

Oregon St.: Expenses 11,903,213 vs Revenue $20,666,946 (a profit of less than $9M)

  6. Reserving judgment, but certainly not a blow you away hire and I doubt that a lot of potential recruits are saying "wow" either.

I think what this hire does say is a lot more about the real reason SE got rid of Pelini.

  7. HC: Alabama offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin? Perhaps he's matured and learned a bit in his travels. Might his dad, Monte Kiffin want to return to the Nebraska DC job to work with his son?

The problem is that Alabama is going to be playing yet for weeks (likely). I'm not clear on how soon one can poach and announce another coach in that situation.

  8. I would suggest that the fact that a coach is your personal friend might color your evaluation process a little bit. I think most Nebraskans would not be as in favor of SE making himself a one-man selection committee if they knew that he was simply going to go with a buddy - particularly an opportunistic one that likes to jump ships.

  9. Funny that Dan Mullen is trending now, because doing some research he is the name that floated like cream to the top of what I was hoping for. Some points:
A move for the family from Starkville to Lincoln is a huge upgrade. You can't say that about some places.

He was the 12th highest paid coach in the SEC this past year. Silence from Mississippi State about a raise or extension, which is odd when everybody else is scrambling to tie up their coaches from prospective poachers.

His first year at Mississippi State, his recruiting class was ranked #19 by Scout.com. That year, against the toughest schedule in the country, he went a respectable 5-7

    He's an Urban Meyer disciple.

He's a QB development guru, having worked with some good ones. Can you imagine a Nebraska team with an NFL-worthy QB? They might come to Lincoln if he's the Head Coach.

I have the feeling he may bring a chunk of his Coordinators and Assistants with him. (Like I said, Starkville to Lincoln is a huge upgrade).

I think he would be a good 'un.
