When I posted this originally, I was frustrated with all the fire Riley postings. I was hoping that my post would help in calming things just a little. After reviewing all the subsequent posts, it appears I had made it worse. What I really find interesting is all the new name posters. I have been reading this board for a long time. I usually keep my thoughts to myself, laugh at some I read and shake my head at others. But, the fire the coach thing is really getting out of hand. Even with all the reposting of my post, nobody addressed the main point I was making.
Its not about the wins or losses, Its about how you play the game. We, the husker faithful, used to keep that in mind and close to our hearts. Not so much anymore. Too bad, that is what made us special as a fan base.
Okay, all you haters..... Ready, set, go.......
Its easy to say its not all about wins and losses during a time where the team is WINNING on a consistent basis. Now that we know what losing a lot tastes like, it most definitely is about wins and losses.

Things were already on boiling point following the loss to Washington. It was alleged that he would be fired based on record alone until the apparent alcohol problem came to light. That just gave them a better reason to fire him.
Sarkisian wasn't fired for football reasons. If we continue this trend of losing week in and week out, Eichorst will do exactly what Pat Haden did at USC.
What I am saying is if we Nebraska don't win another game or finish 3-9, Eichorst' hand will be forced by boosters and fans. Are we seriously going to give him a mulligan after a horrendous year? I doubt it. I hope things work out but the likelihood of that happening at this rate is not good.
They would give Riley a mulligan if he made the necessary coaching changes to buy himself time. There are a lot of HCs available that could step in tomorrow in coordinator positions if we wanted to go get them...
It won't happen. Riley is one of the most loyal coaches in the business. I'd be surprised if he decided to put friendships aside and his career first but I don't see that happening should Nebraska continue to decline each week.

Steve Sarkisan. He's looking for work
He'd make a good OC. Better than Langsdoofus.

Bump.
David Shaw. Power run first/smashmouth coach with hard nose defense to boot. Perfect style for us. He is 46-13 overall at Stanford.
2011: 11-2 (8-1 conference) Fiesta Bowl
2012: 12-2 (8-1 conference champs) Rose Bowl
2013: 11-3 (7-2 conference champs) Rose Bowl
2014: 8-5 (5-4 conference 2nd place)
2015: Currently 4-1 (3-0 conference)
They're about to play UCLA next Saturday. Should be a good game. He's a proven coach and coached under Harbaugh. It would take a decent amount of money to get him to leave Stanford.

Yeah, he had all the answers. Didn't he take his ball and go home?We need Carlfense.
The last time the defense was consistently good was when Carl was here. But, it was a joke so yeah... you can run with it if you want?

Utah has consistently been a better team than Nebraska for the last 15 years.
I"m not talking about having a few good years. Utah has never been a consistent top ten team. Boston College had their day too..but they've disappeared. I"m talking about being the "Nebraska" of old...perennial powerhouse, always top ten...If teams like Utah can play at a high level and win, then so can a team with the tradition like Nebraska. We have way more to offer then they do, and they are not a recruiting hotbed either.
They have also had 2 undefeated seasons during that span.
I'm surprised Whittingham is still there. Maybe he is looking to lead a big time program like Urban Meyer when he jumped to Florida.

BSWe finish 3-9 there is no way Riley is in Lincoln for another year. That I can tell you. The checkbooks will be out come December.
Dunno...Rumorville has something up currently, and I don't see the boosters of substance putting up with this.
Frankly, changes need to be made immediately to the internal staff, and I would be fine with keeping Riley on for another year if we can jettison Langsdorf and Banker and replace them with quality coordinator hires. For example, someone mentioned Kevin Steele as DC--that's a good hire that's reasonable and he has had proven success time and again as a DC (hell, one could argue Baylor's current success was originally built on/due to the bones of Steele's efforts as HC to a degree, not unlike Stoops' success at OU on the bones of John Blake's regime).
As for OC, I don't know who folks would like to see, but I would presume we'd go for a WC guy to jive with Riley's philosophy...though I would hope we would find one that puts a premium on running the ball successfully. The lack of one currently has cost us at least three games this year...four depending on how you view the Miami game.
And a caveat--I want it to be clear that I'm not dogging on the kids--quite the opposite really, as I believe the kids that come to Nebraska deserve the best coaching we can get for them. If it were your son or daughter playing, you'd want them to have one of the best available, and I don't understand why fans are content with substandard coaching for the kids wiling to sign up and represent DoNU.
Literally NO ONE is content with our 2-4 record. Show me people who are content with a 2-4 record. I bet you can't find them.
Riley is content with it. Ever watch his post game pressers? He just said we have a "good" football team and I "like" our team. Eichorst just said he "likes where we're at." And there have been a few people on here claiming they're willing to give MR a few years. Of what? 3-9, 5-7, 6-6?

Here is the issue. We currently have a car that needs servicing. We take it to a boat mechanic because they both can fix " engines". Although both are similar, they are different enough that one can not get the most out of or repair it properly. Oh, it will "work", but it's half a$$ed and still not correct.
The Huskers are a car engine and Riley is a boat mechanic. Both might be the best, but together, neither one will work right.
NU either needs to get a car mechanic, or wait patiently for 3-5 more years as we get more boats....
Either way, I wouldn't expect any earth shattering improvements the next few years. We might get a winning record, but history shows .536....
No, no. Excuse me but we need a janitor to clean house.

In this day and age, every fanbase is programmed with a "win now" mentality. Many schools have gone through different coaches. Our problem is got a little too greedy and twice fired Coaches that had winning records. Now that we have a nice losing coach, all of a sudden its acceptable and people are willing to put up with mediocrity for the next 2-3 years.

Alabama >> longer, greater tradition than NU...in SEC?Yes we can. See Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida State.
Michigan >> longer, greater tradition than NU ... more access to talent ..
Notre Dame >>> Notre Dame..what can you say....
Florida State >>> advantage of being in ACC (like when we used to be in the North, Big 8)...access to local talent....sunshine, beaches and bikini babes.
All of these programs had ups and downs is what I am saying. Bama had them before Saban, Notre Dame went through I think 3 coaches before Brian Kelly. FSU started to skid with Bowden near the end. Michigan has gone through 2 coaches after Carr who won a natty and 5 B1G titles. It can be done. Yes, Nebraska has to recruit nationally that's one of the things that makes us unique.

We need to do something to break the Solich curse. We lost 3 games and fired Frank. We have lost more than 3 games every year since. Solich finished in the top 10 three out of 6 years, and the top 20 two other years. Should we have a Frank Solich day, erect a statue ...
No, we use a time machine to warn T.O. of the future and for him to groom Scott Frost to change everything!

Not in the Big Ten. We should crawl back to the Big Twelve where we belong, then I say HELL YES WE CAN! This was a bad move for us, our program, our culture.
Or we can go to the MAC. We seem to dominate that conference.

I keep saying Sparty is overrated.Don't look now but Rutgers is tied with Michigan State. As it turns out, you have to play every game, they all count and have 60 minutes of football. Rutgers. Beating MSU.
Indeed, they are. They've had this coming for weeks but... I'd trade positions with them at the snap of a finger. And Connor Cook is going to have a career day against our pathetic pass defense.

I think that the future is bright, but this just isn't the year. Doesn't seem to be enough depth yet and while there was definite improvement all around, the players are still learning the system. I don't think we should completely count out a bowl game this year, it just doesn't seem likely from what we've seen at this point through 6 games. We really could find something in the next week and rattle off 7 straight to end the year. Seriously. I know the mood a lot of us are in right now, you say no way in hell. But step back and think. Would that really surprise you? Knowing what we know about the craziness of college football these days. What would "shock" you at this point? Winning 7 in row wouldnt. And niether would losing the next 6.
Are. You. Serious. Minnesota and Purdue are the only 2 games I can see us winning but in a toss up. No way we go into Rutgers and beat them in that environment. Get ready for 3-9 or 4-8.

The problem was we stopped putting the ball in our playmakers' hands. Westerkamp and DPE disappeared. And we have no run game. We also have a poor undersized offensive line.
-
There isn't a qb on this roster that is the pocket passing gun slinger they want. And they won't change what they do to fit the players they have so it wouldn't really matter
Fyfe is probably as close as you get. He throws a nice ball. I remember last year a couple times he got action, the offense seemed to click. Listen, if your QB consistently fails or throws a bad ball eventually guys stop blocking, route running, and get lazy. Essentially they'll give up on the QB. More often than not, I have seen this on occasion this year so far.

There is a lot of work left to be done. He's working hard to get us to 128th place.
-
TA is not a QB. He's an athlete under center. His mechanics are very poor and so is his decision making. This is a known fact and every single game the commentators talk about his mechanics. I really see nothing to lose by letting the no. 2 QB play. Starters lose their jobs all the time on both sides of the ball. QB should be no different.

Gruden coming here: That is the most ridiculous thought I've ever seen on a message board. Coach football again or sit in a booth on Monday night for about 4 million a year.
Actually it's more realistic than you think. People close to him have said he is ready now more than ever to get back to coaching but the right opportunity has to come. How many storied programs like Nebraska are there? Nebraska can afford a big splash hire.

Wow was that when Oregon State won the Pac-10? And that happened nearly a decade ago before he became a washout. They won a few division titles and beat Oregon a lot too.I'm not going to read through multiple paragraphs of a post. We hired a career .500 coach. This is the result. Lets call a spade a spade. Michigan and Florida hired proven coaches who have won and did big things. Harbaugh turned Stanford around, took the 49ers to a SB. McElwain completely turned around CSU. Quick, give me a time Riley and his buddies did something great that stands out on his resume.
Beat #1 USC.
Hey you asked me to do something that stands out on his resume. You can't move the goalposts because it's convenient.
It doesn't stand out to me because he's a .500 career coach and that's a fact. So what... we upset top ranked Sparty but finish 3-9 and that's a good year for you?

This is a silly comparison considering the fact that Paul Johnson has a career winning record of 167-78, 4 ACC division titles, and an ACC conference championship.
