Both are terrible but the fact of the matter is we are reacting pretty mildly to Frost going 0-6. If this happened back in 2015 with Riley the mood would not be even close to as optimistic. There are alot of reasons for this and not all of them are justified, but it is the reality.

If this 0-6 had happened in 2015 the mood wouldn't be nearly as optimistic because Mike Riley was (and still is) a terrible, crappy, football coach who has no idea what it takes to win, let alone be a champion.  His lifetime .500 +/- record demstrates his inadequacies.

    Here is the reality:

    1. Scott Frost is a conference and national championship winning QB during his playing days here.

    2. He played 7 years in the league.

    3. While in the NFL he was coached and learned from: Bill Belichek, Jon Gruden, Mike Tomlin, and others.  Not to memtion being coached in college by Bill Walsh and Tom Osborne.

    4. Frost took over for an 0-12 team and in two years they were 13-0.

Mike Riley NEVER had success even remotely close to that as a sub-par backup player or in 40 years of coaching. That is why Coach Frost is being given far greater latitude than Mike Riley--he's earned it.

**Standard disclaimer** Our program is a dumpster fire and Wisconsin is a Top 25 team; I'd do terrible things to have traded our cumulative record for theirs over the past five seasons.

    But...

Wisconsin won a couple conference titles prior to Urban Meyer and James Franklin getting their programs rolling, but once those two guys got things off the ground it's been obvious that Wisconsin isn't even in their tier.

You can't compete seriously with Top 10 opponents with the recruiting they have. And the only time they've had a really good quarterback in recent years was when Russell Wilson transferred in.

So it's funny to me how life-long Husker fans gush over their program, when in reality they're a program that will never win a national championship and won't win a conference title unless Urban or James Franklin get fired, go to the NFL, or take up a meth smoking habit.

Never is a bit of an over-statement don't you think?

And let me ask you: From 2011 (our first season in the BIG) to this very moment--whose record would you rather have, Nebraska's or Wisconsin's?

The (our) hope is that Coach Frost can take Nebraska to Urban Meyer/Ohio State and Nick Saban/Alabama's level.  That is the hope for the future.

But in the theoretical meantime, if I could swap Nebraska's W/L record with Wisconsin's these last 8 years...I would do it in a heartbeat as would any other Husker fan.

That's about as insightful as saying SF has had six full games to show what he can do and .000 is it.

When you consider a new coaches first full class of recruits for his system usually comes a season after he's hired, it isn't until year 3 his first full class is even in the system and they are only freshman with a mix of his and previous coaches guys from the previous class being sophs or redshirt frosh.  Teams don't win many games with underclassman.

    The bolded...

The rest: Mike Riley had three seasons.  In season two he managed a 9-4 mark.  If he would have maintained 9-4 or even 7-5, in year three, he would have been given a 4th year.  Instead he tanked to 4-8 and was canned.  Bottom line: he had plenty of time and failed.

No idea why you're so vigorously defending him.  He is a crappy, sub-standard coach who literally doesn't care if he loses.

Haven't seen any national championships won by these schools recently, or anytime for that matter....I get the idea but we do not want to be Wisconsin and we definitely don't want to be Iowa.

Yeah, why would we want to be Wisconsin right now????  I mean they've only:

    1. Won like 3 conference titles since we've joined the BIG.

    2. Were a loss to Ohio St in the CCG away from the playoffs last year.

    3. We've beaten them once since we joined the BIG and they've beaten us like a red-headed, immigrant child.

Remember back in the day when Tom Osborne would win conference championships, but had trouble winning bowl games?  And people said he, "Couldn't win the big one?"  That's where Wisconsin is right now.

So if you seriously wouldn't "trade places" with Wisconsin right now, then :dunno

I disagree with the AM comment.  I think we have already seen improvements.  Our QB play had been plenty good enough to win with small improvements weekly.

It sure has.  With the way the NU vs NW game played out, all Nebraska had to do was make one play on their final drive (the 99 yard one).  Instead, a questionable "roughing" the passer penalty and two 4th down conversions by them--make one more fricking play on defense and we win that game.  Nebraska is so close to winning, but it feels like we're a billion miles away.

Primary culprits:  Wisconsin.   Close second:  Iowa.

Who here wouldn't want what they've got - honestly.

Perhaps "steal" is not the word - we've screwed our own pooch.  We have continually questioned our coaching staff, our AD - ad infinitum -  until one or the other is fired.  Our athletic administration has failed to withstand pressure from the fanbase.  We had stability in the 70's, the 80's, the 90's.  Contrast the last two decades.  There is absolutely no stability at Nebraska and HS recruits know it.

The idea of taking scores of Nebraska farm-boys and developing a solid, reliable running attack is, perhaps, forever gone.

It has been said many times and I agree totally:  We are all in with Scott Frost.  But I'll take it one step further -- If he doesn't work out, Nebraska's identity will be forged for years to come.  Save the criticisms of Frost; the situation here is dire; it's time to rally around the coach.

Was it stolen, or did we just give it away?  I'm of the opinion we just let Wisconsin and Iowa take it from us.  Isn't that worse?

We didn't let anyone "take it from us."  We, for reasons unknown, (or known only to the morons who were in charge at the time) decided to "modernize" the program.

It started with Steve Pederson who thought the way Devany, Osborne, and Solich did it was "outdated."  We had Athletic Directors and University Administrators who didn't know a damn (bleep) about football and rather than sticking to our roots and what we knew worked, these people decided to take Nebraska a new direction.  The hiring of Callahan was about as big of a middle finger to Tom Osborne as Steve Pederson could give.

One disastrous coaching hire after another.  Outsiders who had no understanding whatsoever of WHY Nebraska was so good for so long.  In their hubris, they thought they knew better.  The fallacy was, their systems were inadequate because they took away the street fighter mentality that was trademark Nebraska for so long.  And when they took away that hard-nosed, physical running game style, the strength and conditioning naturally went by the wayside also.

That was the genesis of Nebraska's decline.  And Wisconsin and Iowa (and to a lesser degree Minnesota) took what Nebraska did so well and applied to their programs.  Peoe think football games are won on the field in the fall.  They're not.  Football games are won during winter and summer conditioning.  Football games are won in the weight room.  What we see on the field is merely the by-product of all the work the players put in during winter, spring practice, and summer conditioning--that's when football games are won and lost.

Coach Frost has rekindled the fire.  Progress has been slow, but it is painly visible to those of us who know what we're looking for.

So no, no one took Nebraska's mojo, we just lost it for a while because we had people who didn't understand that mojo or how to harness and use it.  Frost does and like Austin Powers, we're about to rediscover our mojo.

Personal, these upperclassmen were recruited for a 4-3 and some have now played in three different schemes. You also have to consider the lack of development and strength and conditioning over the last few years. This season has been a complete trainwreck, but the program needs some stability and time to purge so to speak before it can heal.

    This ^^^ 1,000x.

It boggles my mind at how many people simply cannot grasp the situation at Nebraska and how dire it is.  It is getting better and I am seeing small increments of improvement each week but we're not there yet.

The point about these players playing in 3 different schemes in their time here is an excellent one.  And actually, the players on defense:

Redshirt seniors have played in Pelini, Banker, Diaco, and now Chinander's defense.  Four different schemes in five years.

True seniors have played in Banker, Diaco, and now Chinander's systems...3 different schemes in 4 years.  Good gravy...no wonder our defense is so terrible right now.

    Great post Clyde.  :thumbs

No matter who it would or could be leading us to 0-6, there would be PLENTY of threads defending them. People aren't exactly rational, after all. Cheering for a sport team is a tribal social identity sort of a thing - people will always fundamentally look for reasons and justifications and stretches of the imagination to come up with some kind of optimism and belief that things will be good and okay and how they ought to be.

Or...and I am just spit-balling here...maybe people realize just how terrible we are, the massive size of the rebuild, and that Coach Frost is 6 games into his first season.  And maybe, giving him some time, recognizing the positives, and not over-reacting like spoiled, petulant children is the proper course of action?  Ima go wit dat.

Anyone else concerned about lack of offensive play makers? Not so much this year, because well we're 0-6, but next year?

Looking at next year we have JD, AMart and Mo. After that we're banking on guys on the roster who haven't shown jack$h!t and a bunch of recruits. Who can step up? Where the hell is Miles Jones, they preached all winter/spring he was going to make a difference day one.

We need playmakers in a bad way.

Officiating crews can and have been sidelined for poor performance and I'm sure some have been fired as well.

You're being hysterical if you believe in this dumb conspiracy crap.

I didn't say I believe the conspiracy talk, but I also don't dismiss it instantly as impossible.

And as far as being hysterical, have you read any of the official game threads and the utter "we suck" hysteria going on there?  Read those threads and tell me there isn't hysterical over-reactions going on.  It's practically in meltdown mode every week.  Just saying.

  11. It's funny...I pointed out in a thread after the NU v NW game that, overall, Nebraska's OL actually played well and got a couple "eyeroll" emoticons for it.  I swear, I think there is one or two posters who eyeroll literally everything.

The final series where we couldn't get a 1st down and NW used all their timeouts wasn't a great series, but that was more error on Coach Frost's part than anything.  I mean Nebraska was trying to run inside zone (if I recall) with 10 or 11 personnel and NW has like 9 defenders in the box.  I would have to go back and actually look at what happened though to know for sure.  I don't care how good a team is, the probability of 5 OL and 1 TE blocking 8-9 defenders who are selling out to stuff the run is not that high.

To the point of the OP though, Devine Ozigbo has become one of my favorite all time Huskers.  He's not flashy, he doesn't showboat, he just does his best, works hard, and tries to maximize his reps.  Not bad for a "2 star" recruit.  Just imagine how good Ozigbo would be if he still had a couple more years to develop under this coaching staff.

You're just trolling now right? So now the refs are alumni of school Nebraska used to beat up 20+ years ago and they are willing to put their jobs as refs on the line to screw over Nebraska. That is ridiculous.

Their job on the line?  Now that is ridiculous.  As another poster stated, how many times have referees been held accountable or had to answer for poor officiating?  Zero as far as I can recall.  Coaches and players are forbidden from even criticizing officials.  And that isn't right.  If you are an official and you make a call that is questionable you should have to sit in front of reporters and answer questions--even hostile ones.
