  1. Taylor's first year Watson was the OC, and although he looked goofy, he could sling the ball around surprisingly well when he was healthy (watch game tape of Oklahoma State if you haven't in a while). Beck's first year Taylor hadn't entirely recovered from his ankle, and then played with turf toe the majority of the season. The reason Taylor threw like that and regressed was pain avoidance. I'm not a coach, but I don't know what exactly he was supposed to try and do in that situation. Then he got a whole lot better his Junior year, and then even better still his senior year (67% completions, 9 to 1 TD/INT ratio in 3 games) before he got hurt again. We've got to give Beck a pass on TMart's ankle. The kid was never quite the same as he was as a frosh after that injury, despite some amazing runs like that Wiscy one, and who's to say how much that affected his development. We did have a pretty good offense in those years. Never put it together enough to get over the bump. That 2010 title game still hurts to think about. I guess I reached a point where I surmised that without Bo being able to iron out the wrinkles on defense, we were going to need a fantastically efficient offense in order to carry the load. Beck never provided that. In my mind, it's easier to do with a QB that can make any throw you want than a dual threat guy - but players like Braxton Miller or Shaun Watson prove it's not necessary. The point, for me, was that Beck never fielded a dual threat QB capable of elevating their offense like that or a great passer on offense. Hence, our offense could never completely pick up the slack for our defense. Hence, I was OK ditching him. Well, it's clear to me anyway, that the lion's share of the suckage during the Bo Regime rested squarely on the D. It wasn't the offense that wasn't showing up and getting blown off the field in the most important games. It was the defense. Beck and crew generally did continue to score points in those games, though usually put in severe catchup mode. If OU or Wiscy or whoever has put up 35 or 42 on your D by have(or the 1st qtr), wtf's an OC supposed to do?
  2. Would Tom Brady be any worse as a quarterback if New England ran the ball 70% of the time?Probably not, but you don't have the best QB in NFL history in your lineup and then just let him handoff the ball. But Belichick's O genius is predicated on his ability to exploit the Ds main weakness at every point in a game. Most of the time that involves passing, in part, cuz Brady, but if you have a weakness against the run, he'll exploit that for 10 plays in a row til ya stop it, he doesn't giva a sh#t. I've scene the Pats pass the ball all 1 half, the run it all the other half, just crushing wtever the D adjusts to. But usually, cuz Brady, they mostly pass it, cuz you don't let that kind of weapon go to waste. Brady has built most of his success over the years throwing to Welker and now Edelman, 2 short lil "nobody" guys. Wrap your brain around that one if you can.
  3. I'm not saying he's bad, but some of the times I've watched, especially vs good Ds, it was like, meh, wtev. The guy is near impossible to tackle though, his thighs are like fire hydrants.
  4. Evidently you have a bromance w JT. I don't. If I wanna watch a great passing college QB, I'd rather watch Rosen, or Browning, or the guy @ PSU or USC etc.
  5. I'm sure Beck must've been just "thrilled" to be tasked with making good ol' Taylor Martinez into a passer. That's like asking a sculptor to make a fine statue out of a lump of mud.He had other QBs who never developed too....like all of themWell, as it turned out, if I'm not mistaken, TM and TA DID go on to set some ttl yds records, but no one was ever going to make either into a pure pocket, pro style passer. Beck also had the pleasure of trying to make Cody Green into a passer, OMG, what did the poor guy do to deserve that? No, fact is, NE hasn't had a legit pro style pocket passer since going back to the Ferragamo/Humm days, when Oz was experimenting w that stuff--I suppose you could throw Gdowski into that mix. T Gill was a respectable passer as well. Well, most dual threat QBs don't make the best passers in the world. But, I get it, WE fired Beck, so he must be sh#t. Beck recruited QBs here didnt he?I do not know the answer to that Q. Would stand to reason that he did and they were going for dual threat guys, which, Green, JT, and TA were all top 10 dual QB recruits. Well, again, dual guys are usually "project players" when it comes to passing, they're usually rushers 1st.
  6. Ok, lemme rephrase that. Barrett is a decent, slightly more than servicable passer who will nvr make it as an NFL QB. There, fixed.
  7. No you didn't. You have evidence of preference and trend. Not of what is right. Yeah did, thoroughly ^. And to your last remark: huh? I have evidence, loads of it, of what actual NFL coaches and teams do in actual games in the actual real world in the actual present day NFL milieu. I don't know of any NFL teams that go for 2 other than when they actually, logically have to to win the game. They take the PAT as the status quo, default, highest % thing to do because that's the "right" thing to do. The only team I know of that, as a policy, went for 2 all the time is the OR Ducks and that HC was sent packin', for, in part, going for 2 all the time and botching most of them and everybody and their dog could see it was complete lunacy. There are ZERO NFL teams making 2 pters their default setting. Anyway, not much more to add to this discussion. Hope y'all work it out.
  8. clearly in that situation you go for 1. Guarantee analytics would tell you to take the 1 there. One doesn't need analytics to figure out the obvious. I bow to no computer, call me a Luddite, I guess.
  9. Still much more risk running said play: snap goes over QB's head, QB fumbles snap, QB wiffs on the play, QB is stuffed, QB throws pick and they take it the other way for 2, etc., etc.
  10. Today's Super Duper Analytics Enhanced Bowl: 4th qtr, 0:01 left on the clock, Falcons just scored 6 to pull within 1 pt. What do you do? You go for 2, right? Why, cuz analytics sez so and analytics trump's millionaire coaches' brains. Oh f#*k, Valentine sacks Ryan, game over, thanks for playing, Brady wins record setting 5th Super Duper Bowl and entire Falcons organization is dissolved from the face of the earth the next day. Don't ya just love analytics! Which reminds me, the last guy, of note, to go for 2 in that situation was one Tom Oz, back when there was no OT, and thank go no analytics, and a sure PAT would have tied it and secured his 1st Natty and euphoria across Husker Nation. God bless Oz's moxy, but in retrospect, the BR Nation and Corn History would have preferred another Natty in the record books.
  11. Found some! Well, I was responding to the Lady. But yeah, I know, all the techy puter nerds love their nerdy analytics spread sheets. But I already thoroughly debunked it. I have real world, boots on the ground evidence to support my position: namely, the way the game is actually currently played by actual NFL teams. Provide me just one example of an NFL team that is making a preference of 2 pters over PATs and I happy to look into it. Take all the time you need...
  12. YES YES YES! Any time ya got a chance to stick it to Urbs it's a beautiful thing! KW is also, via the WRs, responsible for Gebbia, so, yeah, I think he's more than redeemed himself. In fact, his next beer's on me!
  13. Go ahead and take a lot at Matt Cassel's New England numbers compared to the rest of his career. Regardless, no, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that stats are a byproduct of coaching philosophy, not just player talent. Yeah, Cassell was great @ NE, that's why they got rid of him. Well, its not fair to compare anybody but, say, Rogers, to Brady--arguably the best QB to ever play the game. But, I take your point, Brady benefits from excellent play calling/ design @ NE. But that mofo MAKES those throws, any throws like about nobody has ever made those throws and if he doesn't, the playbook ain't for sh#t. He's an f'ng surgeon, an assassin, that guy.

Yep, those guys, I was going to mention them but got caught up in the fray. They were respectable, best pocket passers we've had this century. I will also add that Fyfe was prlly a better all around passer than TA, better touch on the ball and fantastic distribution in the MD game, for e.g.
  15. I don't know where you're getting this idea from, but you're wrong. First of all, the total amount of yards a quarterback throws for is just as if not more dependent on the play-calling style than it is on that quarterback's talent. You're telling me quarterbacks that aren't able to run end up throwing for more yards? Huh. What a crazy idea. Second, just because he was a tremendous athlete who could run in a spread system doesn't mean Barrett wasn't a great (pocket) passer, which he was. His freshman year passing efficiency was better than Jake Browning, the top pocket passing Heisman finalist quarterback this year, and are right around the numbers put up by Manziel and Winston. A) Don't you think part of that has to do with the idea that we were playing Chattanooga and East Directional State Tech in September, and Michigan/Michigan State/Penn State in November? This is such a ridiculous red herring argument. All serious quarterbacks get private offseason training including Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Andrew Luck, etc. Are you claiming all of their coaches are garbage at development? Todd Reesing says hello He coached WR at Kansas not the QB.In '07, @ KU, Beck was promoted to "Pass Game Coord/WRs Coach, Ed Warinner was OC: 2007.... appointed as the Passing Game Coordinator at Kansas, and the season proved to be a breakthrough year for the Jayhawks. Kansas finished 121 with the second-best scoring offense nationally, shared the Big 12 Conference North division title with Missouri, and secured a final #7 ranking in both the AP and Coaches polls with their 24-21 win over #5 Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl." 17. I'm happy that you're laughing, it's good for the "soul". Hey, when you're ready to develop and provide a counter argument, repleat with real world evidence, I'll certainly check it out.
  18. Have things not played out exactly as the article reports? There are plenty more articles out there that say exactly the same thing, you are free to Google them @ your leisure.
  19. This is fantastic! Pay him more! Wow, I am feeling the excitment! I daresay, this could easily be the best WR corps EVER assembled @ NE--well, we used to be a running team. I've also got to believe that either POB or Gebbia or both are going to be THE REAL DEAL--best pro style guys since Ferragamo and Humm--and we're going to go all AIR NEBRASKA on this thing! Wooohoooo! Oh, I'm thrilled, THRILLED, and that aint't the Koolaid talkin'! This clearly sets a new standard in the passing attack @ DONU! And Keyshawn's daddy is gonna be at games and doin' interviews on the boob tube and that is big, BIG for PR. I love this! And how on earth did Williams get Lindsay to decommit from the infamous tOSU? Does anyone know the details of how that went down?

  21. "Head coaches I spoke with predicted the status quo for their team and throughout the league. The extra-point kick will remain their default decision after touchdowns..." "Consider the Ravens. In his three-year career, place-kicker Justin Tucker has never missed a kick shorter than 37 yards. Despite the analytics, Harbaugh and most other coaches prefer the near guarantee of one point, even if it is slightly less likely than before. "I have a lot of confidence we'll make the extra point," Harbaugh said. "There will be wind, weather and field conditions later in the season where coaches feel like they have a better chance to make it from two. Or, they could be worried about their kicker and feel good about the offense or a specific matchup they saw. Maybe that changes the numbers a bit. But most coaches, I think, are going to kick about the same as always." Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he would consider the two-point play more often if the NFL had moved it to the 1-yard line. As it stands now, he said, "We expect our kicker to make those [33-yard] kicks all day long." http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/174752/inside-slant-everything-you-want-to-know-and-then-some-about-the-nfls-new-pat-rule
  22. Follow me here: HIGH....SCHOOL....KICKERS. Do I need to say more? And, I'm glad that's working out for you so far. If you really have something, then coaches will notice and you will have helped change the game and maybe you get rich in the process and you can say, "ha ha, I told ya so!" Well, don't forget your buddies here @ HB when that happens. Keep us posted.
