This is a very eye opening breakdown on Nebraska's NIL as it stands now. In short, we're not near as well set up as we thought, and it's going to take a collective effort from the entire fan base - not just big donors - to make it actually work for us

I think the NIL money will get better if the results on the field get better. Nobody wants to make an investment with zero return

I was listening to Rob Zatechka's latest podcast with Travis Justice.  They covered a number of topics, as they haven't had a pod for a few weeks.  Rob spent a few minutes chatting about the retainment of Raiola on the staff.  Rob's main comments were:

    • Yes, Raiola being retained could be in part of recruiting Dylan, but would Rhule risk a 5-star QB by putting him behind a crappy o-line?
    • Rhule wouldn't be hiring an O-line coach he didn't want around for a long time if he didn't trust Donovan
    • Donovan brought in Aaron Graham a number of times this past season to observe and give his thoughts.  Graham said that the individual talent and abilities on the o-line was very poor (gave no more specifics) and Raiola was left trying to polish a turd
    • Based on how poor the individual players were on the o-line this past year, Raiola could have been considered one of the better coaches on the team last year

I think there is some OL talent on the team. I think it has been a combo of poor S&C and a poor scheme. I believe that if Rhule has a more aggressive style blocking scheme, and not a catch the defender scheme we have seen the last several years, the OL will look a ton better next year

Maybe it’s because I’m from Kansas but I never got the chili & cinnamon roll thing. Never.

I'm from SE Kansas right on the MO border and chili with a cinnamon roll was/is a staple here. Hell it's a weekly special at our local restaurant in the winter

I know that everyone is filled with joy that he decommitted from Ohio State but do you think he wants to know who our qb coach is first before he would even think about coming here?  I ask bc kids look at everything and I wouldn't think that he would just commit just bc his dad played here.  Yes we have the advantage with that but one has to think DR would want to surround himself with the very best being that he is the number one qb in the nation.

It’s very possible that Dylan knows who our new Qb coach is because his uncle knows and it just hasn’t been announced yet

Some of you guys are gluttons for punishment. We will be bad next year, anything else and you are setting yourself up for misery and you'll be wanting to fire Rhule after our first loss.

We start out 0-3, win at LA Tech, Northwestern and MAYBE Maryland for a 3 win season. Anything better would be a pleasant surprise. I just don't see it happening.

We play Iowa late and I think we win that one as we will have improved a lot and if Iowas defense reflects anything close to it was this year, they’ll be terrible again

Was honestly hoping the staff would be complete by now...

I think we all were hoping the same thing, but I'd guess several of the guys Rhule is after/hiring are still coaching and are not ready to formally announce they are leaving, or have not completely got on board yet. It would be great from a recruiting standpoint if the staff was filled by now, but I'm trusting Rhule is taking his time and hiring the right guys. We really don't have any other choice but to trust Rhule.

  7. If I remember correctly, Riola wanted to coach the oline to be aggressive and play downhill, but Frost/Whipples offense did not ask for that. I think/hope that Rhules offensive scheme will fit how Riola thinks an oline should play and Riola will be more effective because of it

Do you think the scheme was too difficult - too complex??   I know there have been discussions about zone block verses what - man to man??   Is zone blocking all about blocking someone who enters your zone of responsibility??  I don't fully understand the concept.  If I understand it correctly, in the days of our Pipeline glory, we were all about putting a helmet on another and aggressively getting pancakes.  While zone has less of an emphasis in aggressiveness but on protecting your area of influence.

Is that correct or am I way off on this.

I think zone blocking is a more difficult concept in some ways. Gap/down blocking with a pulling o-lineman is very easy to teach, and easy to get kids to be aggressive because they can be sure in what they are doing

Buttttt we are keeping our OL coach whose job is to prepare the guys to KNOW who there are suppose to block.    It is one thing to have them prepared physically (S&C) and another on the knowledge side.  So, my concern is - will they improve knowledge wise wt the current OL coach.  Hopefullly (there is that word again) Rhule will be able to help Riola to coach up the OL.

This was a problem the entire time Frost was the coach. I'm hoping it was more a Frost issue then Riola issue

I'm rather relieved. Was somewhat expecting to be stuck with Mike Siravo learning to DC on the job despite already having inexperience at LB and DL. White has legit experience and seems like a legit up-and-comer. Interested to see if he sticks with the 3-3-5 or goes with the 4-3 Rhule has said we'd run.

I bet we see some sort of a mixed bag. 3 down linemen with random lbs walked up a lot of the time. Hopefully it’s not so complicated that our defenders can just go out, get lined up and play fast. But complex enough the QB struggles to identify where the pressure is coming from

  11. I watched these and honestly felt like alot of the calls weren’t bad, but Rattler really failed to execute and missed a lot of reads and easy throws. SCs oline was ok at best and based on how what I’ve read they improved as the year progressed and really executed well the last few games, I foresee a lot of improvement from Colorado to Iowa

Five years ago all the evidence said Scott Frost was doing everything right.

Hindsight is a b!^@h. Ignoring the part where he lost a ton of games, I'm trying to remember the first clear-eyed indicators that Scott wasn't doing his job very well.  IIRC, we were even pleased he got his coaching staff buddies to follow him to Nebraska, presuming familiarity and that UCF/Nebraska halo trumped more experienced and expensive big name hires.

I think Matt Rhule is a lot more of a grown up than Scott Frost, and that's going to make a big difference.

I also think that a huge difference will be the experience coaching in higher level conferences vs. what Frosts staff had. I think they were at a huge disadvantage having so little experience coaching in and against P5 conferences

  13. I read on good ol twitter that Satterfield, Barthel, Cooper, and Foley have all been recruiting coordinators in other stops. I think that shows that we’re going to see some extremely aggressive recruiting from this staff. Rhule has a track record of high quality player development and it’s hard not to get excited about what this team will look like in 2 or 3 years
