In the post game presser, Frost indicated the needed personnel to generate a pass rush is not currently on the roster.

It's the most glaring problem with the D, I'm sure they'll do their best to address it - the bad thing is everyone needs elite pass rushers. Lots of competition for those dudes.

I gave a game by game analysis.  What games other than Indiana did our offense outplay our defense?

I don't think the offense has been night and day better then the D. I do think the big difference is, it appears the offense has the pieces to get us where we need to go - QB room is impressive and young, RB recruiting has been very impressive from what I've seen, Wandale has all-conf potential, OL seems to be getting one Army All American type per class. I don't know if we have the guys on the roster or in the recruiting class that are capable of making a big jump in stopping the run/pressuring the QB.

  2. I'm not gonna speak on Chin before his time at Nebraska, I really didn't watch UCF outside a couple of games. I don't think the things Chin's Defenses do well, put us an a place to win games in the B1G. Ive been happy with the pass defense for the most part, our secondary is solid - make any DB cover a guy for 8 seconds and you're gonna have a breakdown - that's not on them. I'm not going to complain about our ability to face turnovers either. I think that has improved since Chin arrived.

The two things that have been outright bad - ability to stop the run when it matters and ability to get to the QB. What worries me is in the B1G, not being able to do those two things are going to get you beat 99% of the time by Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn St, Ohio St, Michigan - and its probably gonna get you beat at least half the time by everyone else in the conf. I really hope we can get difference makers at LB and DL, I'm not huge into recruiting so I have no idea if help is on the way on those fronts.

  3. It’s interesting. No matter our age, I think we’re all slowly realizing Nebraska Football will never be what it was when we all latched on. I know I’ve looked at my 5 month old and realized Nebraska Football will never be to us, what it was to me and my dad as I grew up. I can understand that thought being jarring for a lot of people, because it sucks.

So this is the 8 players:

Eric Lee, Avery Anderson, Lamar Jackson, John Rairdon, Marquel Dismuke, Matt Farniok, Darion Daniels(first year in program), and Green(who is redshirting).  To me it seems like at least this staff is getting the most that they can out of these players.

You also have to wonder if Frost would have brought in the Riley 4 stars, so while we do have some talent, it’s not talent hand picked to be in Frost’s system. Also 4 of those guys are DBs which is probably are strongest unit! My gut feeling is in 4 years, when we look at the high 3* and 4* guys Frost has brought in, this conversation is going to go very differently.

  5. Great post! Love the info. I like to think there are three categories that will dictate how far a team goes (an oversimplification but it’s how I picture it). Talent, Effort (“want to”) , Scheme. Teams like Wisconsin have maxed out scheme and effort but lack talent. Teams like Bama have maxed out all three. Teams like FSU have talent but lack the other two. I think when Frost took over all three categories were bottom of the barrel. Progress has been made on all 3 fronts, but as your numbers show, there is a long way to go on the talent front, and that’s the hardest one for ANY team to correct. I’m hoping by the end of the year we see strides in effort and scheme - the talent we will have to be patient on.

First, any "bad press" is coming from Iowa fans and it's almost out of artificial rivalry banter. The national media wont run with any story because we aren't relevant in any sense to make this into a big story, no matter what story comes of all this, if any. If there is a story, it's going to be written up by some Iowa person trying to throw shade at a program that they remember dominated the Midwest, and therefore, their program, for the last 50 years.

With that, and making absolutely zero excuses for young adults making the bad decision after bad decision, I would venture to guess most of us typing here on this forum come from a rather decent upbringing and have carried that into our adult lives. Things have probably been pretty cookie cutter for the most part for all of us. Unfortunately there are people out there who are not as fortunate as many of us and haven't had it as easy as most of us have. Some of these players in college are not dealt the best of hands growing up and sometimes playing athletics is their opportunity to leave behind the difficulties they had growing up. Sometimes athletics and having a coach and teammates is the first structure in some of these young adults lives. Some of these players have had to grow up far faster than any child should, and grow up without having that structure and guidance.

Reading Coach Frost's comments about it, I am glad Frost has that approach. Some of these young men need sports, need coaches, need teammates. If coaches took a holier than thou approach and kicked a player off at the first wrong doing then they'd be doing that individual no favors. It did seem while Washington was on the team Frost did hold him accountable, and did try to teach him lessons, all awhile giving him all the tools, resources, and opportunities to change his behavior, and most importantly provided him structure and support to be there and help him grow as a person.

I don't agree with Washington's actions or behaviors, but I understand why Frost kept him around. Coaches have a far more important role in these players lives than just teaching them X's and O's, they have to teach them in their most critical times how to navigate through life, and in some cases how to teach them from being a young man to a man. A college coach wears many hats from being a coach, mentor, counselor, role model, etc.

I agree with you, and I think Frost and his coaches are strong enough to run their locker room this way. I do think at this time, this staff has given Mo ample opportunity to succeed here and wouldn't fault them if they moved on. I think you need to prioritize the 149 other guys in the locker room, that are following the rules, that are showing up, that are putting in the work. It's almost not fair to them if you continue to give someone not invested the same opportunity as the kids that are invested.

This man is a genius. Any of you who didn't redshirt your star freshmen in NCAA football... are lying or were crazy. :)

If coaching and program management was like NCAA football, I’d have put that bum Saban in his place years ago, probably could have even done it at a school like UAB.

At this stage- why are we back to fundamentals?  7 games in and we are talking fundamentals.  Sounds like guys haven't been buying in or expected an easy ride thus not paying attention.

My hope is they sat back and looked at what they were doing at the end of last season, when they were beating less talented teams and competing with more talented teams - and they realized their focus at that time was getting our guys to do the basics well. I think maybe they put a lot of pressure on themselves to make a “year 2 jump”. We don’t need a year 2 jump, we need to look like that team at the end of last year. This year still has the potential to be a lay the foundation type season. No need for a “jump” just continue to hammer home the basics and let the leap happen naturally.

Well put yourself in the players shoes.  You are a coddled super athlete who has always had luck with football but because you are so athletic you don't really get challenged in high school.  Now in recruiting, you were passed over by Texas, Alabama because there were players with your athleticism who also LOVE football and are intent on the NFL, while you merely like the game, this having manifested itself in your stats and slight lack of self promotion.  Now here comes Nebraska who lost out on the kid who went to Alabama.  They are willing to pay your way completely.  You get to Lincoln and are shown the posh amenities, full snack/smoothie bar at the Hawks Championship center, fine ladies, and lots of bud.  Later that night (and many nights after) the older members of the team and some chicks party in the dorm with some mighty fat bowls.

Coach is talking about winning and sacrifice, but what he mean?  Nebraska only ever wins 5-8 games a year so as long as we keep it on the down lo, what they gonna do, kick us out?

Our issues come down to coaching and talent. Good lord does this post have way too many incorrect assumptions. If you said this tongue in cheek, my bad.

  10. I don't think Frost has to get rid of anyone. But good lord tonight should be a "Come to Jesus" moment for everyone associated with our program. A cartoon character of a coach, who uses more gimmicks then your local used car salesman, whose had worse recruiting classes then you since you've been at your school - just fisted you on live television.

    I'd start with:

-No more we had a great practice BS, tell the guys to practice hard, but it's not worth s#!t if they have a train run on them on Saturday.

-Pull guys who consistently get beat, LOAF, or commit dumb penalties.

-Make Davis run til he pukes on Monday, takes a real POS to cheap shot everytime you get down 20, make an example of him.

Nebraska fans will fill a stadium every freaking week, pay for 150+ Million dollar facilities, allow for you and your staff to ALL be millionaires - We will be critical, we will have high expectations, but we will support you week in and week out. Time to earn it boys, show us why we're paying you at the top of the B1G.

Agree. This team is not very good and just hoping to make a bowl. Love to see Wandale playing so much. That would be my strategy that you will play early. Look at the roster. There are no high NFL caliber players. Turn this thing over to the younger players now.

I honestly don’t care if we’re not good, still would like to see guys pulled out of the game and told what they did wrong and why they’re not playing. If you allow undisciplined play of course it’s gonna keep happening. Also the only time I’ve seen emotion out of this team is when we’re getting raw dogged and the game is already over. If you don’t like it, bring some emotion earlier.

I know his running hasn't always looked as good this year, but he's the leading rusher on the team, leading QB rusher in the B1G and 8th in the B1G for rushing yards out of all players. That's game changing regardless of what the eye test tells you. The only QBs ahead of him for average yards are Fields and Clifford.

The fact that our QB is the 8th leading rusher in the B1G actually tells you there is probably issues beyond his play that he's having to run so much.

Holy crap, I didn’t even look that up and relied on my eyes. His fumble numbers make more sense after I look at how many carries he’s had. Honestly, if he would protect the football better, it would be a no brainer for me. Like the game plan last week - let’s protect the football, let’s get Mo/JD/ Wandale the ball in space. Let’s try to eat up yards in QB run game - the QB that can do those 3 things the best will give us the best shot to win.

  13. I know people don’t necessarily want to hear this, but a good outing from Vedral and I think Frost and co has to give it some thought. AM is the more talented QB for sure, but sometimes the more talented guy, isn't the guy that gives you the best shot at winning. Martinez leads the conf in turnovers at this time, his passer rating is average at best and he hasn’t been a game changer in the running game. If Vedral can prove to run the offense efficiency this week, proves to be an asset in the running game, and shows he can protect the football - I hate to say it but that’s the guy who gives you the best chance of winning.

Disclaimer: this is all assuming we see the above from Vedral this week, I’m not saying I think Vedral is a better option until I see him lead the offense for a entire game.

Woah this is genius and I'm sure they haven't though about that. Quick someone get a line to Frost that he needs to tell the kids to get better. That's what will fix it.

I thought it was pretty good. We could keep telling them their heisman candidates, that’s working very well.

What good would saying your own team is bad accomplish? When has a coach ever said that about the team he currently coached/coaches?

Well at some point they need to take the kid gloves off and tell these kids if they want to be OSU or Wisconsin then it’s time to play like it, and sure as s#!t time to work like it.
